'It Stings' - Charley Hull's Message Goes Viral After Heartbreaking Loss
Charley Hull has come so close to winning a major championship a few times in her career, but no result was as devastating as Sunday's loss at the AIG Women's Open.
Hull came into the final round of the AIG Women's Open with nothing to lose. After shooting a 6-under 66 on Saturday, she found herself just three shots behind Miyu Yamashita. All the positive momentum that she built in the third round carried over to the front nine on Sunday. She was bogey-free through the first nine holes and picked up three birdies.
Unfortunately for Hull, back-to-back bogeys on holes 16 and 17 pretty much knocked her out of contention.
"Towards the end, I didn't even hit a bad shot on 16," Hull said, via GOLF.com. "I hit a perfect tee shot, and just the wind was howling off the left and didn't even move it like an inch, like I hit it so pure. It was a bit unfortunate. Then on 17, missing that putt. I hit a good putt right on the line. And then shame about 18 because I had a pretty hard chip over the bunker, and I'd done pretty well just to get it there. Yeah, it was a bit unfortunate, but I felt like I was very much in control of my game today. I don't feel like I mishit any shots out there. I hit it pretty pure all day."
When the dust settled, it was Yamashita who lifted the trophy at Royal Porthcawl.
Roughly 24 hours after suffering this heartbreaking defeat, Hull posted a message on Instagram for her fans.
Hull was proud of her resilient effort at the AIG Women's Open, albeit her performance on the back nine could haunt her for the next few days.
"There's nothing like the adrenaline of being in the mix on a Sunday. It's why I love this game. Felt so in control out there. Hit it pure and gave it everything," Hull wrote. "It stings to come up short, but after day one I'm proud of myself for climbing the leaderboard like I did and being the bridesmaid again. Thank you @royal_porthcawl, you were such a tough test but what an awesome course. @aigwomensopen and @therandagolf, you continue to deliver this world class event and elevate our game. We wouldn't be doing what we do without your vision.
"To the fans, you were unbelievable. I had goosebumps out there yesterday with the cheers. I'm grateful for this journey and everyone who is part of it. We move on."

Struber 'open' to more signings if 'right character'
Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber says he is "open" to signing more players in the current transfer window but only if they are the right "character" for the club. Struber, who was appointed in June following Liam Manning's departure, takes charge of his first Championship match on Saturday, 9 August when the Robins face Sheffield United. City have brought in striker Emil Riis, midfielder Adam Randall and goalkeepers Joe Lumley and Radek Vitek - the latter on loan - so far this summer. "We're open, but it's super important that when you have a group that have such good energy together, then it's not just about finding someone who is good on the tactical or technical level - they must also have the right character," Struber told BBC Radio Bristol's Sound of the City. "We are looking sharp on the market, I cannot promise but we want to do a good job and hopefully in the end of the transfer window, we can say we made many things in the right way." Bristol City reached the play-offs in May for the first time in 17 years with the smallest squad in the Championship, using just 24 players. The togetherness and bond between the playing group was repeatedly drawn on as a factor in their success which Struber stressed he needed to maintain. "This is a big asset that we are so strong together and this could make a big difference," he said. "I have a big value in this, that my group knows exactly how important it is that we have this togetherness and this energy, this is something what makes us special." A new 'pro-active' style of play Bristol City is Struber's second coaching role in English football, having previously spent 11 months managing Barnsley from 2019 to 2020. He has also had spells at New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and most recently Cologne, taking the German club to the verge of promotion last season. He said he will bring a more "pro-active" style of play to the team this season. "I don't want to only have one system, I want to be very fluid in how we press and how we handle possession," he said. "We want to press high on the field, we want to be vertical in transition, very direct and at the same time I like it that in possession we find moments of control and domination. "In all faces of the game we want to be unpredictable - not so much [like] the last season." Lifelong Wolves fans from Dudley care home visit Molineux
TWO lifelong football fans have enjoyed a heart warming return to their beloved team's stadium after decades away. Fred Tennant and Ian Humphries, residents at Broadway Halls care home in Dudley, were given the chance to visit Wolverhampton Wanderers' Molineux Stadium thanks to a wish fulfilled by the Wolves Make a Wish Trust. Scott Bates, activities coordinator at Broadway Halls, described it as 'a perfect day'. The pair, who have lived at the care home for two years, began their visit at the Wolves Museum. Mr Tennant pointed out photos of matches he attended years ago, while Mr Humphries quietly took in the memories. The day became even more special when they met Wolves legends John Richards and Steve Bull. The former players chatted with the fans over tea and sandwiches before leading them out onto the pitch. Mr Tennant and Mr Humphries had their shirts signed and received a Wolves memorabilia gift bag. Mr Humphries said: "This is something I'll remember forever." Mr Tennant agreed. He said: "It's been the most memorable day. "A day I'll never forget. "It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about us that they helped us to live out a dream – and we didn't even have to ask." Danica Chugh, general manager at Broadway Halls, said: "We believe that every moment is worth cherishing. "We want everyone we care for to know how important they are to us here at Broadway Halls. "It is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team here in making our residents' dreams come true. "It was wonderful to see how happy Ian and Fred were – and the staff loved being a part of this as well."
