'Disturbing' 19th Century German toys fetch £192k at auction
More than 400 German toys dating from the 19th Century have sold at auction for almost £200,000.The collection of toys made out of wood, papier-mâché or composition in the Sonneberg and Erzgebirge regions of Germany went on sale at auction with Special Auction Services in Newbury, Berkshire. The hoard of quirky toys previously belonged to David Finn, from Nottinghamshire, who spent decades amassing the collection. He died in 2023 aged 81.The auctioneer's toy expert, Daniel Agnew said described them as "a little disturbing" and said they were considered "too controversial nowadays".
The collection sold for a hammer price of £192,154, including buyers premium.A Sonneberg papier-mache and wood hand-cranked mechanical toy of a shepherdess was one of the oldest and highest valued lots.Mr Agnew said: "It dates back to about the 1830s. It's such an extraordinary survival."It made one of the highest individual sales - £6,500.
He said one of his favourites, a squeaking pig."When you squeeze his bellows, he squeaks, makes a piggy noises and his tongue sticks out and his ears pop up."Mr Agnew explained that in the 19th Century, toys were "very much a rich person's object". He said: "Although, we call them all toys, they weren't all necessarily for children. "I think they were often adult novelties, the sort of thing that you might have in your drawing room. "They represent soldiers, characters, animals, social history, grotesque things, everything that's often lost in history now."
Mr Agnew said the collection reflects social history and evolving attitudes. He added the objects were "considered highly amusing" in the 19th Century but would "not be considered acceptable today"."This collection gives us a remarkable glimpse into the world of the 19th Century toy shop even if some of the pieces cause a little controversy," he added.

Seething Love Island fans slam ‘vile' Ben and demand he's axed in public vote after explosive row with Yasmin
LOVE Island fans were left seething as they slammed Ben as being 'vile' and demanded he's axed in public vote. Viewers of the long-running ITV2 dating show were given the choice to vote to save their favourite girl and boy. 5 Fans of Love Island have slammed Ben Holbrough Credit: ITV2 5 Yasmin Pettet confronted her couple partner over what he said behind her back Credit: ITV2 5 She was left fuming when he seemed to insult her Credit: ITV2 The contestants that receive the fewest votes from the public will be at risk of being dumped from the show. In tonight's episode of Love Island, Yasmin Pettet, 24, decided to pull her current couple partner, Ben Holbrough, 23, for a chat. Although she went in with the intention of squashing any underlying tension, things soon got heated. She accused him of saying negative things about her to the boys behind her back, as she hinted that he didn't appreciate her enough. He seemed to blame her for choosing him in the last recoupling, to which she replied: "Who else would I have chosen at the end of the day?" The private taxi driver responded: "I haven't really been feeling you to be fair." She was completely taken aback by his comments as she sarcastically snapped back: "Okay, I'm glad you're honest about that now." Flicking her hair in disgust, she added: "That's like really helpful." He then dug himself deeper as he explained: "I gave it a go because I felt like I had to." When she said that she felt like he did not really give their partnership a proper chance, he then said: "I didn't really want to, to be fair." Love Island fans claim Ben 'looks like he's being held hostage' after surprise new couple is revealed The argument seemed to escalate as she was not happy with how Ben seemed to hide his true feelings, saying: "Don't f****** waste my time." He then insulted her further with his responses "You're lucky Shea even picked you. To be fair, I think you're lucky you're even in here now to be fair. "No one rated you when you were in here let's say. You've only come out your shell because you're in a couple with me." She then accused him of being dramatic and thinking everything is 'The Ben Show'. Before storming off, she snapped back: "The world doesn't f******* revolve around you. "I'm trying so f******** hard to be nice to you and it's taking everything in me not to snap and say something sarcastic and really b*****." Yaz said: "You're so immature," as he remarked that, "no man wants you in here." No-one rated you when you were in here lets say. You've only come out your shell because you're in a couple with me. Ben Holbrough As she walked away, Ben shouted to the rest of the villa: "Eh, she's made content for the next three weeks lads." After watching what could be one of the most hard-to-watch arguments in Love Island history, fans took to social media to slam Ben in droves. Writing on X - formerly known as Twitter - one fan wrote: "Ben resorting to insults. Immature. Bye Felicia." A second claimed: "Ben is the type to only respect women he finds attractive. Nasty piece of work," along with a puke emoji. "I don't think Ben did himself any favours in the chat," noted a third viewer. As a fourth fumed: "Watching Ben speaking to Yas was one of the most uncomfortable things I've seen in a long time. It wasn't good content or drama, it was genuinely just vile." And a fifth added: "Yasmin did not deserve that from Ben. Vile!" 5 Yasmin accused her co-star of wasting her time Credit: ITV2 5 He declared that he only wanted to get to know her because he felt like he 'had to' Credit: ITV2 Love Island continues on ITV2 and is available to stream on ITVX.

Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded is a little too quiet
Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded is expected to launch very soon, but it's nowhere to be seen – and fans think it has been quietly delayed The much-anticipated Season 4 Reloaded update for Call of Duty has yet to materialise, leading players to suspect a quiet delay. Black Ops 6 hasn't done much to keep players engaged in its fourth season. Despite a steady stream of players spending time in Warzone, it's ironically the game that players have shelled out AAA prices for that is falling short. The game has failed to provide any new significant content to keep shooter fans hooked, and as it continues to release silly skins that many feel undermine the game's atmosphere, it seems as though it's starting to lose traction, especially now that fans have been waiting so long for the anticipated Black Ops 6 Zombies finale Janus Towers. It's frustrating, but there's also stiff competition on the field with the new Fortnite Squid Game Reload mode. It's high time that Call of Duty steps up its game. However, it appears that any new update has quietly stalled. After the Black Ops 7 reveal as part of summer's showcase season, it was thought that the mid-season Reloaded update for season 4 would be just around the corner. But as we pass its halfway point, it's still absolutely nowhere to be seen. So, what exactly is going on? And when is Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded? Here's what we know. Why hasn't Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded dropped yet? Gamers have been left puzzled as Call of Duty has yet to announce its Season 4 Reloaded update, leading many to believe it has been discreetly postponed. The ongoing Rivals event in Black Ops 6 was extended without any public notice, and with four weeks having elapsed since the release of Black Ops 6 Season 4 on Thursday, May 29, players have been anticipating at least an announcement, if not an update, which has yet to materialise. Adding to the intrigue, Call of Duty has been teasing the Season 4 Reloaded content without disclosing a launch date, announcing new Beavis and Butthead cosmetics on Twitter and discussing the update on the CoD Pod, all without giving any indication of a release date. Given this, it seems likely that Activision is taking its time until it is confident it can deliver the update promptly. With this in mind, we can anticipate that Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 will debut on either Thursday, July 3, or Thursday, July 10, in line with its usual release schedule, but this has yet to be confirmed. We'll have to wait for confirmations from Activision to know the truth, but at the moment, it appears that Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded has been delayed. Hang in there, because it's coming. Probably.

Sir Stephen Fry wants to create a TV drama series where people communicate without technology
Sir Stephen Fry wants to create a TV drama series where people communicate without technology The 67-year-old actor and broadcaster's idea is for emails and social media platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, to be seen as the "uncoolest thing" (Image: PA ) Sir Stephen Fry wants to create a TV drama series where people return to communicating in an "unplugged life". The 67-year-old actor and broadcaster's idea is for emails and social media platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, to be seen as the "uncoolest thing", and that a pupil would ask his teacher how to hand in an essay because he does not have a computer and, therefore, cannot submit it via an email. Chatting to entrepreneur John Reynolds on a recent episode of the Extraordinary Life podcast, Stephen revealed: "I was going to write a TV series about it, in which this kid comes to a school and completely changes the school." As the pupil does not communicate by using electronics, his cohort thinks the youngster is odd. The Celebrity Traitors star continued: "And anyway, they all stare at this kid, 'Who is this ridiculous child?'" Eventually, the pupil motivated the tech-savvy children to communicate in the old-fashioned way, and they enjoyed it. Article continues below Stephen added: "He starts basically influencing everybody. They think this is actually quite a fun way to live. It's really enjoyable. "And I think it just takes that, it would just be a little - the balance would just shift." Stephen regularly posted on X, when it was known as Twitter, until 2022 - a few months before Elon Musk purchased the platform. He has kept his account but is not active on it - just like on other social media platforms. And Stephen thinks social media sites have made the world a far worse place. He explained: "We come to a tipping point now, where the uncoolest thing in the world is Snapchat and Instagram and TikTok. "And they are just boring. And we know they're harmful, but they're also vapid and shallow." The Jeopardy! host said the "coolest" schoolchildren would be those who are not glued to a screen. He said: "But what incredible fun if you were 15 to live an off-grid life, and unplugged life, using all these fabulous old tools. Article continues below "You would be the coolest people in the school." Stephen initially thought social media "could change the world" in a good way. He said during his Digital Futures Institute lecture at King's College London in 2024: "I'm the chump who thought social media could change the world."
