Hong Kong police arrest 3 women for alleged HK$1 million pet company theft

Hong Kong police have arrested three women for allegedly stealing HK$1 million (US$127,387) from a pet supplies company.
The force said on Tuesday that the three suspects, aged 32 to 57, were apprehended the previous day in Wong Tai Sin, Tseung Kwan O and Cheung Sha Wan following a report filed in mid-July.
An investigation revealed that the company's owner discovered the missing money while reviewing accounts from 2020 to 2021.
The three local women are suspected of transferring funds from the company's online store payment account to their accounts, as well as altering documents to evade internal audits.
The trio have been released on bail and are required to report back to police in mid-September.
The case is being handled by the crime investigation unit of the force's Wong Tai Sin district.

Why smear Hong Kong's prosecution of secession as political persecution?

The Hong Kong government recently declared bounties against a number of former residents now in the United Kingdom and the United States for alleged offences against the Hong Kong national security law . This prompted a strong reaction from the UK government, which considered the move to be an example of ' transnational repression '. This week, The Guardian published an interview with Chloe Cheung Hei-ching , who faces a warrant for her arrest that was issued last year. Its article portrayed her as someone fleeing political persecution for daring to criticise the Hong Kong government and advocate for democratic reform. This framing is misleading. Cheung is being charged with incitement to secession and foreign collusion. Contrary to common misconceptions, the national security law does not criminalise political advocacy or criticism of the authorities. The Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates in Articles 45 and 68 that universal suffrage is a political ideal for the entire city. Moreover, according to the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, defendants can argue against the statutory offence of sedition – inherited from British colonial times – in court if they were giving 'an opinion on the system or constitutional order … with a view to improving the system or constitutional order'. However, Hong Kong's national security laws do in fact criminalise acts of secession. According to Article 52 of the Chinese constitution, citizens have the obligation to safeguard national unity. Article 1 of the Basic Law stipulates that Hong Kong is an 'inalienable part of the People's Republic of China'. What is more, those in the UK, in particular, should not lose sight of Article 1 of the Sino-British Joint Declaration , which states that it is the 'common aspiration of the entire Chinese people' that China should resume sovereignty over Hong Kong.

Police recover US$30,000 worth of Labubu dolls stolen from Southern California warehouse

A police department in Southern California recovered about US$30,000 worth of Labubu dolls that were stolen from a warehouse, the agency announced this week. The collectible items have recently surged in popularity. The Labubus were stolen in a series of trips that spanned multiple days, the Chino police department said in a social media post. Two suspects, both minors, were later identified as workers at the warehouse, the department said. Law enforcement found the items at a home in Upland, a city in the state's Inland Empire. The announcement comes as authorities in Los Angeles county investigate a separate incident in which thieves stole about US$7,000 worth of the toothy little monsters from a store in La Puente. Chino police obtained a search warrant to enter the home in Upland, the agency said. 02:08 Labubu creator Kasing Lung shares the vision behind his unique plush toys Labubu creator Kasing Lung shares the vision behind his unique plush toys One suspect attempted to flee but later surrendered, the department said.

Hong Kong's Food Expo can whet the appetite for new ideas

Hong Kong has long enjoyed a reputation for being a food paradise, offering a wide variety of cuisines and styles, from cheap traditional eateries to high-end gourmet restaurants. However, the industry is facing challenging times as diners' tastes change, with residents heading to the mainland on holidays and rents remaining high. There has been a worrying wave of closures. Advertisement The Food Expo , opening on August 14, provides a timely opportunity for residents and visitors alike to eat and drink to their heart's content, reviving their appetite for spending in the city. Last year, a record half a million consumers attended the five fairs that run in August. In addition to the Food Expo, these include Beauty and Wellness, and Home Delights exhibitions, as well as a Food Expo Pro event, aimed primarily at the trade, and an international tea fair. The festival will feature 1,890 exhibitors from 35 countries and regions. The diversity of the food on offer is impressive, with 45 regional pavilions. Theme days include a focus on intangible cultural heritage, Asian delights and healthy eating. To mark the 35th edition of the Food Expo, 100 products will be on sale for HK$35. And there will be entertainment, too, from tai chi to a 'coffee cupping' challenge for baristas and dim sum demonstrations. Stimulating local consumption is one of the declared aims of the expo, organised by the city's Trade Development Council. The challenge, however, will be to harness the enthusiasm for food fuelled by the festival so that it re-energises the sector. Eateries need to innovate and adapt to changing market demands, appealing to younger diners. This especially applies to more traditional outlets. Inspiration might be found at the expo, both for long-standing establishments and new entrants. It features a Food Science and Technology Zone which looks to the future as well as some eye-opening food and drink products from around the world. Advertisement Helping outlets survive and driving a rebound in the sector will require a joint effort from all concerned – the government, landlords, banks and the retailers themselves. But the Food Expo can encourage spending, generate new ideas and give the industry a much-needed lift.
