Niemann breezes to fifth LIV Golf success of season

The Advertiser27-07-2025
Joaquin Niemann captured his fifth victory of the season with a three- stroke win at LIV Golf United Kingdom.
Niemann carded a three-under 68 on Sunday to finish with a 17-under 196 for the tournament at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Rocester, England.
The Torque GC captain collected five birdies against two bogeys to add his to his titles at Adelaide, Singapore, Mexico City and Virginia.
Sunday's victory served as a $4 million payday for Niemann, who began the week by firing his caddie and coach after missing the cut at the 2025 Open Championship.
Niemann's Torque GC, however, were unable to hold their three-stroke lead over Legion XIII in their bid for a first team title since 2023.
Legion XIII shot a staggering 14-under on Sunday to finish at 35-under for the tournament, eight strokes better than Torque GC.
Niemann wasn't too interested in talking about his individual play on Sunday.
He said: "Well, I'm going to talk for the first two days because today I didn't feel like I had my best. Yeah, it was great. I was able to flow on tough situations.
"I felt like today I was pretty calm, pretty chill, until Bubba (Watson) started playing golf. He made it tough for me. I was actually feeling the pressure on 13, 14, but, yeah, just stay in the present. Yeah, was able to hit a great shot on 15. After that put me back into my place."
Watson had a stretch of four birdies and two eagles from No.9 to No.14. He rolled in six birdies overall to finish in second place at 14-under after a third-round 65.
Niemann put a halt to his charge after sending a shot within five feet of the cup on the 15th hole.
"I was pretty happy to see that ball go in that close, and making that birdie I think was huge for the next three holes," he said.
Caleb Surratt (65 on Sunday) sank six birdies during his bogey-free round to finish at 13-under for the tournament, followed by Talor Gooch (66) at 11-under.
As for team play, Legion XIII captain Jon Rahm was thrilled after his team captured their fourth title of the season.
"With all four scores counting this year I thought we played to our advantage. It showed early on and it's showing now," Rahm said.
Cameron Smith was the highest placed Australian, finishing 10th, nine shots off the lead. Marc Leishman was a shot behind with Lucas Herbert 34th and Matt Jones 40th.

Bernard Tomic calls it quits after falling over on match point

Crestfallen Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic has added another blooper to his reel of lowlights, falling over on match point in an ATP Challenger Tour clash. And that was no metaphor — he actually fell over. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Bernard Tomic falls over on match point. The former world No.17 had match point and a look at American world No.424 Stefan Dostanic's second serve when he lost his footing and tumbled onto the court as his racquet went flying. Tomic took some time to get up and recompose himself while a nearby supporter could be heard asking if he was OK. Dostanic went on to win the game, take the set to a tiebreaker, which he won, and then claim the match when Tomic retired hurt after losing the first two games of the third set. Tomic, who will be 33 in October, has fallen to 211 in the world. Bernard Tomic fell over on match point. Credit: ATP Challenger It's a far cry from his former Davis Cup teammate Jordan Thompson, who is enjoying the form of his life in the twilight of his career. Thompson, whose battling heroics proved the highlight of the Australian challenge at Wimbledon, is to return to action at the Cincinnati Open after a much-needed injury break. Thompson worked wonders with his beaten-up body to reach the last-16 at the grass-court grand slam, having negotiated two five-set classics and a four-setter even while suffering from a debilitating back injury. His extraordinary run ended with him, almost inevitably, breaking down and being forced to retire against Taylor Fritz. He's since grabbed a crucial month's rest and recuperation following a season in which he's been so plagued by a catalogue of injuries that he had even talked at Wimbledon of possibly quitting for the season. But the indefatigable 'Thommo' will be back in action in the Masters 1000 event at Cincinnati which begins on Friday, after his name featured among eight Australians in the main draws for the traditional star-studded warm-up event before the US Open. He will join Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin, fresh from their encouraging runs to to the quarter-final at the Canadian Open, as well as Chris O'Connell and Adam Walton in the men's draw, while Daria Kasatkina, Maya Joint and Ajla Tomljanovic will feature in the women's. Credit: AAP Thompson, whose ranking has dropped to No.44 in the world, will open up in Cincinnati against a qualifier and will be keen to avoid an early exit that could consign him to a place outside the top 50 for the first time since the start of his breakthrough 2024 season. De Minaur, who has a first-round bye, will meet the winner of the Hugo Dellien-Reilly Opelka first-round contest in the last-64 while Popyrin will face a qualifier in his second-round opener. No Australian man has won in Cincinnati since Pat Rafter 27 years ago, and it will be once again the tallest of orders with the game's two biggest names back in the fray. World No.1 Jannik Sinner and No.2 Carlos Alcaraz are seeded to meet each other in what could be another classic final after they shared triumphs at Wimbledon and Roland Garros respectively. Both men gave Toronto a miss, with top seed Sinner ready to defend his Cincinnati crown after beating Frances Tiafoe in the final last summer. - With AAP

‘Honour': Icons join Aussie sporting greats

Australian tennis champion Lleyton Hewitt called it 'surreal' and NRL legend Cameron Smith an 'incredible honour' as the iconic duo were among six new inductees to the ultimate collection of sporting champions in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Recently named an official AFL legend, goalkicking great Jason Dunstall, Netball World Cup winning captain Laura Geitz, Australia's most capped Socceroo Mark Schwarzer and Olympic snowboarding gold medallist Torah Bright rounded out the superstar six. They joined the absolute elite, the best in Australian sport ever, including Sir Donald Bradman, Dawn Fraser and Cathy Freeman, in the Hall of Fame, which recognises only the top echelon of athletes who have achieved the highest honours at the peak level of competition. Hewitt, a two-time grand slam winner and former world No. 1, a ranking he held for 75 consecutive weeks, is already in the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Australian Tennis Hall of Fame but was blown away by the latest honours. 'It's pretty surreal to be honest,' he said. 'When you're playing your professional career it's not something you think about at all or focus on, but over the years growing up in Australia we've had such a rich history, not only in our sport of tennis, but also in so many other great sports as well, that I've had so many great role models and idols that I've looked up to, all there in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. 'So for me now to be inducted is an incredible honour.'' Smith, the first and only player to reach 400 NRL games as well as 42 State of Origin matches for Queensland and 56 Tests for the Kangaroos, including 33 as his nation's captain, was also a multiple premiership skipper with the Melbourne Storm. But he said his legacy was growing rugby league in his adopted home state. 'It is an incredible honour, one that I will forever hold with great pride,' he said of his induction. My parents, my sister and brother, my wife Barb and our three children. Without their love and support I would not have achieved what I did. For that I will always be grateful. 'Being the first person to play 400 NRL games will always be on top of the personal achievements in my sporting career. On a broader scale, playing a role in the growth of rugby league in Victoria as a member of the Melbourne Storm provides me with immense satisfaction. 'I will always be grateful for being a part of such an extraordinary organisation.' Dunstall booted an incredible 1254 goals from 269 games with Hawthorn and is one of only six players in VFL/AFL history to break through the 1000-goal threshold, while also playing in four premierships (1986, 1988, 1989, 1991). 'It's an amazing honour and great privilege to be considered a worthy induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame,' he said. 'Quite humbling given the depth of Australian sport and the incredible quality of our sporting stars.' Laura Geitz is a netball legend. Phil Hillyard Credit: News Corp Australia Netball icon Geitz was a member of two Netball World Cup-winning teams in 2011 and 2015, the latter as the Diamonds captain in a home country triumph in Sydney, and also led Australia to Commonwealth Games glory in Glasgow in 2014. Schwarzer was part of three World Cup campaigns with the Socceroos and played at the highest level in the UK for two decades. His iconic saves changed Australia's World Cup fortunes, stopping two penalties against Uruguay in a 2006 qualifier, and etched his name in Australian football history. Bright is Australia's most successful winter Olympians, having captured one gold and one silver medal across three Olympic Games and also carried Australia's flag at the opening ceremony in Vancouver in 2010.

LIV star set for Australian Open return

LIV star and 2023 Australian Open champ Joaquin Niemann has declared his intent to join Rory McIlroy and play at Royal Melbourne in December. Chilean gun Niemann has won a staggering five times from LIV's 11 events in 2025 and could seal the season-long individual title in Chicago this week. His winning run would arguably have him in the world's top 10 if LIV players were given world ranking points. Amid a renewed request from LIV officials to get points, Niemann said he hoped those in charge of the world rankings, including former Masters champion Trevor Immelman, would do the 'right thing'. He said he tried not to think about where he would sit in the world pecking order and what it could mean for majors qualification, given there were no rankings points on offer just yet. 'It's not something that I think about to tell myself in the mirror, Joaco, you are No.5 …- no, I don't do that,' he said. 'That's not my job. I feel like I'm just here to do my best and try to make as many birdies as possible and to make the crowd enjoy us playing golf around the world. 'I feel like the ranking system is not up to me, it's up to them. I'm expecting that they're going to do the right thing for golf.' Niemann has played in the past two Australian Opens, winning in 2023, using the event, as well as the Australian PGA, to get crucial ranking points. His recent Open and PGA experiences, as well as playing in the LIV event in Adelaide, have made Australia a favourite destination and he's keen to join McIlroy, who will be the headline act when the Open returns to Royal Melbourne. 'We'll see what's going to happen with everything else, but I would love to go back to Australia,' he said. '(Royal Melbourne) is one of my favourite golf courses that I've played. Also, I think Australian golf has probably the best courses in the world, and I feel like more than just the tournament, it's just I really enjoy going there and playing golf in Australia in front of those people. It's a lot of fun.' Australian Open officials hope both the lure of ranking points, and spots in the 2026 British Open for a top three-finish in the event, as well as the Australian PGA, lure a raft of other stars to join McIlroy, Adam Scott, Cam Smith and now likely Niemann in the field.
