99 Speed Mart in improved 2Q showing
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the home-grown mini market chain retailer said it had opened a net addition of 248 new outlets year-on-year (y-o-y), bringing the total to 2,894 outlets as of June 30, 2025.
'We remain optimistic in our sustainable growth trajectory, supported by ongoing footprint expansion and innovative retail programmes designed to meet the evolving needs of our customers,' it noted.
Its founder and chief executive officer Lee Thiam Wah, in a separate statement, said the group's financial results were 'underpinned by our consistent expansion strategy and our focus on enhancing shopper experience through greater convenience and accessibility.
'We currently operate 2,894 outlets, with all outlets now (effective July 1, 2025) opening from nine in the morning to serve more customers,' he added.
For 2Q25, 99 Speed Mart's revenue rose 11.9% to RM2.71bil from RM2.42bil in the previous corresponding quarter, mainly driven by outlet expansion and increased transaction volumes.
The group also benefited from stronger consumer purchasing power following the minimum wage increase in February and government social assistance initiatives.
Total sales transactions rose 13.2% y-o-y to 128.9 million in 2Q25, though basket size was slightly lower at RM21 compared with RM21.30 a year earlier.
Correspondingly, net profit for the quarter under review rose 22.1% to RM153.21mil from RM125.53mil in 2Q24.
The improved results came despite a 17.5% rise in administrative and other operating expenses to RM348.2mil, largely due to higher depreciation from outlet expansion and the impact of minimum wage adjustments effective Feb 1.
Pre-tax profit and net profit margins improved to 7.5% and 5.7% respectively, up 0.5 percentage points from 2Q24, aided by higher other operating income and improved utility efficiency from adopting energy-efficient equipment.
Other operating income, which includes product display allowance, distribution centre allowance and marketing allowance, grew by 22.6% y-o-y to RM225.3mil in 2Q25.
This was thanks to the increase in product display, in line with outlet expansion.
For 1H25, 99 Speed Mart's topline climbed 9.8% to RM5.32bil from RM4.85bil in 1H24, while net profit increased 14.6% to RM296.39mil from RM258.69mil.
Growth was driven by a 9.4% y-o-y increase in new outlets and a corresponding 10.5% rise in transaction volume to 248.4 million.
Basket size averaged RM21.40 in 1H25.
Administrative and other operating expenses rose 15% y-o-y to RM676.5mil in 1H25, reflecting higher depreciation from new outlets and warehouses as well as increased staff costs from wage adjustments.
Meanwhile, the group reiterated that while it remains firmly rooted in its core markets, it will continue exploring regional and international opportunities aligned with its brand positioning and long-term vision.
'The group maintains an opportunistic yet strategic outlook when it comes to business expansion beyond domestic borders.
'This approach allows the group to remain agile and responsive to evolving market dynamics, while unlocking new customer segments and revenue streams, ultimately reinforcing long-term value creation for our stakeholders,' it said.

SunCon shares up after being spared from anti-graft probe
KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Construction Group Bhd's shares on Bursa Malaysia went up in the early session today after the company and its subsidiaries were spared from an ongoing anti-graft probe involving one of its employees. At 10.15 am, the counter rose 10 sen to RM5.86, with a total of 1.85 million shares changing hands. RHB Investment Bank Bhd believes that the latest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) update may instil confidence towards the group's established robust mechanisms and systems that uphold anti-corruption compliance, as the case remains an isolated one. "The adoption and certification of the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS)demonstrates its commitment to ethical business practices, requiring substantial financial investment in system development, amongst others. "We think that Sunway Construction will continuously enhance processes and internal controls, moving forward," it said in a note today. On Tuesday, the group said that it had received an official written confirmation from MACC clarifying that the scope of its investigation pertained solely to the personal conduct of the individual concerned, and that it was an isolated case. "MACC has further confirmed that neither Sunway Construction nor any of its subsidiaries are under investigation under any provision of the MACC Act 2009," it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia. Meanwhile, CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd sees this development as a positive catalyst while also removing a key overhang on the stock. "Also, given its strong brand equity and parent company, we believe this could pave the way for more external construction wins," it said in a separate note.

Bursa Malaysia opens slightly lower
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened slightly lower today due to mild profit taking in selected heavyweights after recent gains, amid weaker sentiments on the global economic outlook, a dealer said. At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) slipped 1.16 points to 1,589.08 from yesterday's close of 1,590.24. The benchmark index opened 2.21 points lower at 1,588.03. Market breadth was negative with decliners leading advancers 166 to 145, while 264 counters were unchanged, 2,019 untraded and 16 suspended. Turnover stood at 123.43 million shares worth RM75.37 million. In a note, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd expects the FBMKLCI to trade in a lacklustre tone today, tracking Wall Street's weaker overnight performance. "However, buying interest might emerge in domestic-driven consumer-related counters, such as 99SMART and MRDIY, which are expected to benefit from government cash aid and handouts," it said in a note. The brokerage firm said the Wall Street closed mostly lower as investors shifted out of significantly overstretched large-cap tech stocks and moved into small caps and value stocks ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting this Friday. "Traders' focus this week will be on Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, where the market is speculating the United States Federal Reserve to adopt a more dovish tone and potential rate cut in September, with the probability currently at 86.1 per cent," it said. Among heavyweights, Maybank was 3.0 sen higher at RM9.83 and IHH Healthcare added 2.0 sen to RM6.87, while Public Bank slipped 1.0 sen to RM4.45, and both Tenaga Nasional and CIMB fell 2.0 sen each to RM13.70 and RM7.37, respectively. On the actively traded list, Vantris Energy eased half-a-sen to 3.5 sen, Pestec and Magma trimmed 1.0 sen each to 11.5 sen and 37 sen, respectively, while Tanco was flat at 73 sen.
