Grey's Anatomy icon's new 'sinister' thriller with The Boys star given release date
Jensen Ackles and Eric Dane lead the cast of the upcoming action series Countdown, which has now been given a release date on Prime Video
Prime Video's newest action-packed series Countdown has finally been assigned a release date, and it's set to hit screens imminently.
Countdown features actor Jensen Ackles, famed for his role in The Boys, who steps into the shoes of protagonist Mark Meachum, an LAPD detective enlisted to probe the murder of a Department of Homeland Security officer.
Jensen shares the screen with Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane, who plays Nathan Blythe in the series. They're joined by a stellar cast including Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight, and Uli Latukefu.
The forthcoming series is the brainchild of Derek Haas and comprises 13 episodes in total.
The initial three episodes will drop on Prime Video on 25th June, with the remaining instalments released weekly until 3rd September, when the grand finale will be broadcast, reports the Mirror US.
The official synopsis for Countdown states: "When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to investigate.
"But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions."
Shooting for Countdown kicked off in Los Angeles towards the end of 2024, with production wrapping up in March 2025. Sneak peek photos reveal the cast in character.
Countdown is just one of the many projects on Ackles' horizon. He's set to return as Soldier Boy in Vought Rising, a prequel series to The Boys.
The upcoming show will delve into the backstory of Soldier Boy and Stormfront (played by Aya Cash), as well as the history of Vought International. Fans are eagerly awaiting a release date for the new series.
In a statement about Vought Rising, producers Eric Kripke and Paul Grellong shared: "It's a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy and the diabolical manoeuvres of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought.
"We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V."
Countdown will premiere on 25 June on Prime Video. Episodes will then be released on a weekly basis.

The final season of The Handmaid's Tale is slowly creeping toward its end. Episode 6, Janine, just dropped on Channel 4 and Prime Video, and it's a brutal one. Elizabeth Moss 's June and Moira go undercover at Jezebel's, a mission that quickly spirals into violence. The fallout? We're about to find out. If you're watching in the UK, we're still a few episodes behind the US, where the finale has already aired on Hulu (a subscription service only available in the US – or with the use of a VPN). But with episode 7 airing later this week, we're edging closer to the end – and to the adaptation of Margaret Atwood 's The Testaments, the Booker-prize -winning sequel. Episode 7 is set to air on Channel 4 and Amazon Prime Video at 11pm on Sunday 15 June, a day later than usual. Whether you're waiting for the next episode, or just looking to catch up on every episode so far, here's where you can watch The Handmaid's Tale in the UK.
