Preparation of city logistics plan for Chennai and Coimbatore is on
At a session on State Logistics Policy, organised by TIDCO in collaboration with the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Mr. Sandeep made an elaborate presentation, according to which the multi-modal logistics park (Phase 1), coming up at Mappedu, near Chennai, will become operational by 2027.
'The MMLP Coimbatore land acquisition is in advanced stages,' he said at a session on State Logistics Policy that was organised by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in collaboration with the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) will be setting up a net zero ambient cold storage warehouse at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. 'We chose this area mainly because we had land there and that's the electronics corridor of Tamil Nadu. We have a 1.30 lakh sq ft of warehouse space at Sriperumbudur. The tenders will be coming out soon,' said G.Gayatri, Area Head – III, CONCOR.
'Our target is by next April, we should have it ready. The investment will be substantial at around Rs.60 crore. We are in talks with MNCs in Sriperumbudur,' she said at the sidelines of
Tamil Nadu industries secretary V Arun Roy said, 'While current logistics infrastructure is satisfactory, a lot more needs to be done to improve this, including addressing congestion in roads, reducing transit time from industrial clusters to the ports, improving ports and addressing gaps in cold chain infrastructure,' he said.
Ramkumar Shankar, Managing Director of Chemplast Sanmar Ltd and President of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: 'Right now, the MCCI is working on a study on the existing Chennai Airport. There are lot of good things that have come up at the airport and changes too. There are certain constraints on the passenger end, but we are also focusing on the cargo side as well in the study. We will present the findings to the government four weeks from now,' he added.
I.Jeyakumar, Member Secretary, Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), gave examples of problem statements and what strategies could be used. One problem statement was movement of air parcel cargo to airport gets complex using LCV and delivery vans causing congestion during peak hours and impacting passenger movement. He suggested that utilization of Metrorail network can be a strategy.

SBI to raise Rs 20,000 crore in debt capital this fiscal: Chairman Setty
MUMBAI: The nation's largest lender SBI, with a balance sheet north of Rs 67 trillion, will be hitting the debt capital market this fiscal to mop up Rs 20,000 crore bond sale, even though the bank has 'more than sufficient liquidity with which it can lend up to Rs 12 trillion'. Over the weekend, the bank reported a street-beating set of numbers with net income rising 12.5% on-year to Rs 19,160 crore in the June quarter, primarily driven by the gains from treasury operations and better asset quality. 'Last month the board had given us a go ahead for a Rs 20,000 crore debt raising. We will raise the money this fiscal even though there is no need for funds now or in the course of this fiscal as we have sufficient liquidity to lend an additional Rs 12 trillion in fresh loans. It may not be in one tranche as well,' chairman CS Setty told TNIE on the sidelines of announcing the June quarter earnings Friday. The bank expects lending to pick up once the uncertainty about the tariff war is resolved as corporates are holding back taking the money now. The bank has a project finance loan sanctioned, worth Rs 3.89 trillion, which is expected to be disbursed in the remaining period of the fiscal. Another component of the excess liquidity is the Rs 3.75 trillion in excess invested in government bonds under the SLR route, Setty said. The chairman said most of the proposed Rs 20,000 crore debt raising is replacement debt of additional tier 1 capital. This proposed fund raise would be through issuing Basel-III-compliant additional tier 1 and 2 bonds to domestic investors, the bank had said in mid July. It may be recalled that the bank had raised Rs 25,000 crore in a QIP issue making it the largest ever such fund raise through this route in the country. This would add around 30 bps to the core capital which was 11% as of March 2025, said Setty.

State pushes jatropha, ethanol to boost green energy
1 2 Patna: With World Biofuel Day falling on Sunday, residents of the city may recall the late President A P J Abdul Kalam's convocation address at Patna University nearly two decades ago in which he urged the promotion of jatropha plantations and rural biofuel enterprises to meet Bihar's energy needs. Delivering his address at the city's S K Memorial Hall on Dec 30, 2005, Kalam recommended using "chour" land (wetlands) for jatropha cultivation. "Biofuel plants grown in 11 million hectares of wasteland can yield a revenue of Rs 20,000 crore a year and provide employment to over 12 million people, both for plantation and running the oil extraction units," he had said. Although Patna University scientists did not initiate a dedicated project to boost the agricultural production of this biofuel plant in the state, agricultural experts identified 13 districts as suitable for cultivation. Farmers in at least Purnia and Kaimur districts are already growing jatropha commercially, according to Patna University botany department head Birendra Prasad. Prasad added that jatropha, known in Hindi as 'Ratan jot', is among the best sources for biodiesel production. "Besides jatropha, other plants like maize and sugar cane are also being used for the production of ethanol. Growing such petro plants on a larger scale can boost the production of biofuels," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo Bihar currently operates 12 ethanol factories, producing a combined 5.65 billion litres, with 60% of output exported to southern states. By 2026, nine new ethanol plants are expected to be established in districts including Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Kaimur, Muzaffarpur, Barh, Jamui, Vaishali and Buxar, according to the state industries department. Recently, the state govt introduced the Bihar Biofuels Production Promotion (Amendment) Policy, 2025, aimed at increasing production of ethanol and compressed bio-gas (CBG) from organic waste materials such as agricultural residue and animal dung. The policy targets pollution reduction and a cleaner environment. Fittingly, the theme for this year's World Biofuel Day is "Biofuels: a sustainable pathway to net zero. " Environmentalist Mehta Nagendra Singh said the policy aligns with Bihar's goal of expanding renewable energy use and contributing to India's net-zero emissions targets. "The policy provides a framework to develop a sustainable biofuel sector in Bihar, attracting investment, creating economic opportunities, and promoting a greener environment," he said.
