Former India opener and current head coach
Gautam Gambhir
is facing mounting pressure after Team India's worrying run in Test cricket, despite continued success in white-ball formats including winning the Champions Trophy.
The latest setback came at Headingley, where India, under new captain
Shubman Gill
, lost to England by five wickets. This adds to previous series defeats against New Zealand and Australia. India have now won only one of their last nine Tests under Gambhir's watch. The stretch includes a 3-0 whitewash in New Zealand and a 3-1 loss to Australia that saw India surrender the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

This rough patch has coincided with a transition period marked by the retirements of senior players
Virat Kohli
and
Rohit Sharma
from Test cricket following the Australia series loss.
A fresh team under Gill's leadership is still settling in, but the start in England has been disappointing.

Former India batter
Aakash Chopra
analysed the situation on his YouTube channel, urging patience with Gill but warning of rising pressure on Gambhir. 'There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. He has won two matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia, but we lost three to New Zealand, three to Australia and now one to England.
He has been losing and losing.'
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Chopra stressed there are no excuses left. 'The selectors have given everything the coaching staff has asked for. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period.'
With the England series now finely poised, Gambhir's leadership in the red-ball format is under the spotlight like never before

Neeraj Chopra Backs THIS Indian Cricketer To Be Potential Javelin Throw Star!
Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra praised Jasprit Bumrah's fitness and strength, suggesting he could excel as a javelin thrower. Real recognise real, no matter the sport. So did Neeraj Chopra, who recognised the greatness of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who he believes could prove to be a great javelin thrower himself. During a segment on Star Sports, the star Indian javelin thrower was asked, by the likes of Navjot Singh Sidhu, who in the Indian cricket team he believes could excel as a javelin thrower as well. For the former Olympic champion Chopra, the answer was too simple: Jasprit Bumrah. 'I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be really good at it," Chopra stated. Bumrah's impressive fitness, coupled with his strength, were the reasons why Chopra banked on the pacer to shine in the other sport as well. And well, there is no questioning Bumrah's excellence, who, despite the injury scare, secured his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket against England in the first Test at Headingley. The call on Bumrah's availability will be taken by him, in consultation with the medical team, and could well open or shut doors for other bowlers waiting in the wings and for a chance. Chopra, on the other hand, has been in fine form lately, having clinched wins in the Doha DL, Paris DL, and the Ostrava Golden Spike. Indian javelin throw ace is now all set to kick off the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, slated to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on the 5th of July. The NC Classic was originally scheduled to be held on the 24th of May, but had to be postponed in the aftermath of the armed conflict between India and neighbouring nation Pakistan. The event promises to pit seven international javelin throwers alongside five Indian athletes, including double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra himself. First Published: June 28, 2025, 15:24 IST

Trailing 0-1 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after a five-wicket defeat at Headingley, India hit the ground running on Friday. While the full squad turned up for practice, Bumrah and fellow pacer Prasidh Krishna stayed away from active drills, sparking speculation about their readiness for the Birmingham Test. Saturday, however, offered a much-needed boost to India's pace arsenal. Bumrah, Prasidh, and Mohammed Siraj all bowled at the nets, with Siraj following up on his batting work from Day 1. Their return to bowling brought renewed intensity to India's preparations, as the team looks to bounce back in Birmingham. Poll How confident are you that India can level the series at Edgbaston? Team India's Intense Nets at Edgbaston| Prep for 2nd Test vs England While Bumrah's return is a positive sign, his inclusion in the Edgbaston XI remains uncertain. The 31-year-old bowled 44 taxing overs in the series opener and is slated to feature in only three of the five Tests as part of a workload management strategy. Head coach Gautam Gambhir , after the Headingley loss, reiterated that the decision on Bumrah's participation will be made on a match-to-match basis, regardless of the series scoreline. With bowling now at the heart of India's practice, the team will hope their spearheads are battle-ready as they eye a series-levelling win at Edgbaston. ‘Our tail doesn't bat and our top order doesn't bowl. They should bowl a little at least': Aakash Chopra
In the first Test between India and England at Headingly in Leeds, although the Indian top order managed to score tons and put a platform, the lower-order batters were completely blown away after that by the England bowlers with India ending up on sub-par totals on both occasions which enabled England to chase massive 371 runs in the final innings. 'Our tail doesn't bat and our top order doesn't bowl. They should bowl a little at least. I am not saying that you need to give 15-odd overs, that you should have a player like Jacques Kallis, or like they (South Africa) are playing Wiaan Mulder at No. 3, or Aiden Markram is bowling a lot,' Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel. In the recently concluded World Test Championship (WTC) final, Mulder, despite not being a top-order batter, has been promoted up the order for South Africa. 'It will work out even if that's not the case. That's not something you need to focus on. However, you need a little bit of bowling at least because you get some balance, options, and choices with that. However, that doesn't happen because our batters don't bowl,' Chopra observed. Although India does have Shardul Thakur on their side for the first game, who could not make an impact with both bat and ball but he has shown in the past that he can score runs and pick wickets. Shardul Thakur was not given the ball until the 40th over, while other bowlers were having a tough time, apart from Jasprit Bumrah. By the time the all-rounder was brought in, there were set batters at the crease, and the ball also lost its shine and was not letting swing. 'You have taken Shardul Thakur in the team and didn't give him a ball in the first 40 overs. And Joe Root was batting. And Shardul has a very decent match-up against Joe Root. So, if Shardul Thakur's role is not less, then I genuinely rate Shardul as a cricketer,' Ashwin analyzed on his YouTube channel. Thakur does have the knack of picking wickets. 'He has caught Ben Duckett and Harry Brook. He can make things happen. But he has to use them at the right time. But if this is going to be the way he is going to be used, I don't think he is really making any sense. Because he has to be given the ball for him to make a difference. He didn't bowl that much in the first 40 overs,' Ashwin observed.
