New post for Togo leader could see him rule for life
This follows constitutional reform that ended presidential elections, and introduced a parliamentary system.
The opposition said the change was in order to allow President Gnassingbé to stay in power indefinitely.
His family has ruled the country for 58 years - Faure Gnassingbé took over in 2005 from his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, in 2005, who had ruled for almost four decades.
This latest change results from a new constitution approved by lawmakers last year, labelled by critics and opposition figures as an "institutional coup d'état".
Gnassingbé's government had paused some of the changes following huge backlash, but has moved ahead with his new role.
Togo's municipal elections in July will be the first under the new constitution, which has replaced the presidential system with a parliamentary one.
In theory, the role of president of the republic is now only an honorary title, but analysts say Gnassingbé's power is more entrenched than ever with his new post of council president.
His party, the Union for the Republic, won a huge majority in last year's parliamentary election, taking of 108 out of 113 seats in the National Assembly.

Trump rips Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman as ‘deranged bum' after he criticized sweeping tariffs
President Trump blasted Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman as a 'deranged bum' after the ex-New York Times columnist was critical of his administration's tariff regime. 'Paul Krugman of the New York Times has been predicting Doom and Gloom ever since my great election success in 2016,' Trump raged in a Truth Social post late Sunday. 'In other words, he has been wrong for YEARS, as ALL markets have been hitting new HIGHS, and are now higher than ever before.' Zambia warns $15000 US visa bond rule poses 'unnecessary financial strain'
The visa bond policy, enacted by the Trump administration, affects two African nations — Zambia and Malawi. It requires certain visitors from these countries to pay a refundable bond of up to $15000 as a condition for entry into the US and was introduced to encourage compliance with visa terms and curb overstays. The Zambian government's statement, issued on Friday, comes amid growing unease in several countries targeted by the rule, which Washington says is aimed at discouraging overstays on specific visa categories. ' While the (U.S.) government has a prerogative to initiate policy changes, the Zambian government views this development with serious concern, given its potential economic implications on trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges,' Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe said in the statement. ' This includes the unnecessary financial strain on Zambian nationals.' Malawi, another African nation affected by the policy, has also raised concerns over the measure. The move comes as Trump intensifies his crackdown on illegal immigration, increasing resources to secure the border with Mexico and arrest people in the U.S. illegally. Trump-era visa clampdown on African nations President Donald Trump has implemented a series of immigration measures that have had a pronounced impact on several African nations. These actions included tightening visa rules, expanding the travel ban in 2020 to cover Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, and Tanzania, and launching a visa bond program requiring applicants from certain countries to deposit up to $15,000. The policy changes, which also imposed stricter vetting on students and temporary workers, have fuelled perceptions of a U.S. increasingly resistant to African engagement. African governments and rights groups have condemned the measures as discriminatory and damaging to U.S.-Africa relations. While Washington insists that the visa bond is refundable if travellers comply with visa term such as departing on time, critics argue the requirement disproportionately burdens lower- and middle-income applicants, while leaving wealthier travellers relatively unaffected. Diplomatic discussions are ongoing, with Zambia signalling plans to press the U.S. for either an exemption or a review of the policy.

Bill Maher Blasts ‘Superman' Star Dean Cain for Joining ICE: ‘He Was Already Living in a Van'
HBO comedian Bill Maher has MAGA Superman actor Dean Cain for signing up to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Cain—known as the star of 1990s TV hit Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman—announced he was joining ICE this week after appearing in a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recruitment video. Maher said on Real Time With Bill Maher Friday that Cain, 59, joined ICE 'not because he's MAGA. He just needs the money.' 'I think he joined because he heard that lots of migrants were coming into this country, and a lot of them were bad actors,' Maher added. 'He said, 'Room for one more?'' Under pressure from the White House to arrest 3,000 undocumented immigrants per day, DHS has stepped up its recruitment efforts. ICE now accepts applicants without a college degree and has done away with its upper age limit (39) and lower age limit (21), which allows teenagers to join. New ICE officers will also receive a signing bonus of $50,000. 'You could put a porch on your house for that,' Maher quipped, noting that, given Trump's anti-immigrant purge, one might struggle 'to find anyone who would build it.' In a recruitment video released earlier this week, Cain touts President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigrants. 'Here's your opportunity to join ICE,' Cain says. 'Since President Trump took office, ICE has arrested hundreds of thousands of criminals, including terrorists, rapists, murderers, pedophiles, MS-13 gang members, drug traffickers, you name it—very dangerous people who are no longer on the streets.' JOIN ICE!!We need your help to protect 🇺🇸 — Dean Cain (@RealDeanCain) August 5, 2025 According to data obtained by TRAC, however, seven in 10 migrants detained by ICE have no criminal record as of July 27. Taking aim at Cain's lackluster career, Maher said his decision to join ICE comes at an opportune time. 'It works out—he was already living in a van," Maher said. Comedian Margaret Cho also went after Cain in a video posted on Instagram, noting that Cain is half Japanese. 'Why would you join ICE and encourage people to join ICE when your ancestors were interned in World War II?' Cho said. 'You're not even white… I know you, and you are not white.' The Daily Beast has reached out to Cain's representatives for comment on Maher's remarks.
