Thailand-Cambodia conflict: Wisma Putra told to provide updates

The Sun3 days ago
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked Wisma Putra to monitor developments in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, following positive signals from both countries regarding the possibility of implementing a ceasefire.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the MADANI Government spokesman, said the matter is in line with Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair in 2025.
Fahmi said the Prime Minister informed the Cabinet today that he had contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai yesterday regarding the issue.
'At this point, there is a willingness from both prime ministers to announce a ceasefire, and we are awaiting their statements.
'Following this, the Prime Minister has asked Wisma Putra to examine the situation and provide updates on the outcome of discussions between Thailand and Cambodia,' he said at his weekly press conference here today.
Media reports stated that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of triggering the latest confrontation.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have escalated since May 28 following a bloody incident in the Preah Vihear area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
The two countries have been at odds over an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic ties.
Last Wednesday, the Thai government downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia in an immediate response after a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine allegedly recently planted.
Cambodia later retaliated by downgrading its diplomatic relations with Thailand to the lowest level on Thursday. - Bernama

Ahmad Zahid: Smallholders continue to receive monsoon season assistance this year

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue providing the Monsoon Season Assistance (BMT) this year as an ongoing effort to assist smallholders affected by the unpredictable weather, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said RM264.91 million has been allocated for the initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 330,000 recipients nationwide, including those under the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and the Sabah Rubber Industry Authority (LIGS). "This assistance aligns with the Madani Government's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of rural communities. BMT is not just a one-off financial assistance, but a lifeline and a source of livelihood when the rainy season threatens harvest and income. "This is the true face of the Madani Government that cares for smallholders who are the pulse of the country's industry," he said when speaking at the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) People's Tuition Programme: Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony here today. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Risda chairman Manndzri Nasib. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said that the volatility of commodity prices and yearly weather uncertainties continue to exert financial pressure on smallholders, affecting both their yields and incomes. Therefore, he said, initiatives such as BMT are an important form of intervention in rural development policy, which not only functions as economic support but also as recognition of the hard work of smallholders. — BERNAMA

A joint press conference is expected to be held following the meeting. Anwar, who is also the current Asean Chair, had last week proposed a peace agreement between the two parties following a recent border conflict. Tensions began escalating after a clash between Cambodian and Thai troops in the Preah Vihear area on May 28. For decades, the two Asean member states have been embroiled in a long-standing dispute over their 817-kilometre border, which has yet to be resolved. It was reported that US President Donald Trump had announced that both governments had agreed to hold talks to discuss the implementation of a ceasefire soon.
