Of the three new cases, two are men, aged 71 and 53 years, while the third is a 21-year-old woman. While two are in home quarantine, one is admitted to a city hospital, officials said.
Ranchi civil surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar said, "A total of 18 tests were conducted on Wednesday, all of which returned negative. While the new variant does not appear to be severe, everyone must stay alert. We are fully prepared to handle the situation."
A total of 20 isolation beds have been allocated at the Sadar Hospital to manage a potential surge in cases. All community health centres and primary health centres would be provided with testing kits by Friday, health officials said. "Request for adequate supplies has been initiated," Dr Kumar said.
Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) has designated 20 beds in the dengue ward for stable Covid patients. A screening OPD and sample collection facility has been set up.
Departments responsible for RTPCR testing and genome sequencing have been instructed to submit their requirements for reagents and consumables.
The Rims management directed the store department to maintain supplies, including 500 surgical masks, 500 PPE kits, 500 bottles of hand rub, and oxygen cylinders and masks (NRVM), as needed. Provisions include ventilator spare parts, consumables, monitors, and five reserve ventilators. The facility will maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines for effective patient care.

Death of man who tested positive for COVID-19 causes concern in Vizag

The death of a man, who tested positive for COVID-19, at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam has brought the focus back on the need to adopt COVID-appropriate behaviour, especially in crowded places. Padilam Kashinath, 64, hailing from the city, was admitted to a private hospital with complications of Parkinson's Disease, Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome, Pneumonia and COVID-19 on May 28. The death report mentioned that the patient was suffering from the four diseases. The cause of death was, however, mentioned as 'viral pneumonia respiratory failure'. Kashinath died while undergoing treatment on Thursday morning. The news spread rapidly, though the doctors and the officials concerned were initially tight-lipped about the case. They refused to admit that the victim had COVID-19 as it was not confirmed by the Virology Lab at the King George Hospital (KGH). They said that the patient had co-morbid conditions. Attempts to contact the District Medical & Health Officer failed as he could not be reached over the phone. The first case of COVID-19 positive case of the city was a woman, and it was confirmed a week ago. Subsequently, her relative and the doctor who treated her contracted COVID-19. However, all three have recovered.

Karnataka reports third Covid-19 fatality amid rise in cases

A 63-year-old man who had tested positive for Covid-19 died at a private hospital in Mysuru on May 25, pushing Karnataka's coronavirus death toll to three, health officials confirmed on Friday. The patient was admitted on May 15 and succumbed ten days later. A statement from the state health department attributed the death to septic shock complicated by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), acute kidney injury (AKI) with reduced urine output, Covid pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and hyponatremia. He also suffered from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bronchiectasis. (Also Read: 67 dead as record-breaking rainfall batters Karnataka, over 19 lakh at risk: Report) As of May 30, Karnataka has 234 active Covid-19 cases, with 114 new cases reported on the same day, according to the health bulletin. A total of 460 tests were conducted, including 406 RT-PCR and 54 rapid antigen tests. The test positivity rate stood at 24.7 per cent, with a case fatality rate of 0.8 per cent. Health officials reiterated that Covid-19 testing must be carried out in all Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases and selectively—up to 5 per cent, among Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases. Throat swab samples must be sent to designated labs for RT-PCR confirmation. The department also directed all testing to be done in government laboratories and emphasized that test kits must be used on a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) basis to prevent wastage. Rajasthan records 15 fresh Covid cases

The Covid-19 cases are steadily rising in Rajasthan, with 15 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, an official said on Friday, adding that Jaipur has recorded the highest number of cases at seven, followed by Bikaner with three and Udaipur with two. Isolated cases have also been reported from Jodhpur and two other locations. In response to the increasing cases across India, the Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory to all states, urging them to take preventive measures, discourage mass gatherings, and promote the use of face masks. The Central government has also asked Rajasthan to submit a comprehensive report by June 2 on the availability of beds, oxygen, ventilators, ICUs, essential medicines, and PPE kits in all district and sub-district hospitals, medical colleges, and health institutions. The goal is to ensure preparedness in case of a spike in Covid-related hospitalisations. According to the Rajasthan Health Department, one case each has been reported at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital and RUHS, while five other cases emerged from a private diagnostic center in the city. Overall, 69 Covid-19 cases have been reported in the state so far this year. On the national front, the Union Health Ministry has attributed the recent rise in Covid-19 cases to the emergence of new Omicron sub-variants—JN.1, XFG, and LF.7.9 -- which are causing mild symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat. As of May 28, India has recorded 1,621 active Covid-19 cases, with more than 90 per cent concentrated in six states -- Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The advisory also instructs state health departments to test patients showing signs of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and influenza-like illnesses (ILI), and to conduct genome sequencing of positive cases to track emerging variants. In addition, the Health Ministry has emphasised the need for public awareness campaigns to encourage hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette (covering the mouth while coughing), refraining from spitting in public, protecting the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, and wearing masks in crowded places.
