Ipswich Town's Most Popular Shirt: Why Does Ed Sheeran Have Jersey No. 17 Allotted?
The 34-year-old musician, who purchased a 1.4 per cent share in the English club in August of the year 2024, has served as the shirt sponsor since the year 2021.
British singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran is English club Ipswich Town's jersey No. 17.
The 34-year-old musician, who purchased a 1.4 per cent share in the English club in August of the year 2024, has served as the shirt sponsor since the year 2021. The boyhood Ipswich fan was handed the shirt number in a gesture of appreciation at the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
Sheeran, who is one of the best-selling musicians in recent times, was born on the 17th of February 1991, and the jersey serves as a nod to the singer's date of birth.
Ipswich have allotted the jersey to Sheeran ever since, with the exception of the 2024-25 season in which the Tractor Boys competed in the Premier League.
The PL handbook permits only members of the first-team squad to be assigned numbers, per rule M1, and hence Sheeran had to forego the privilege for the side's stint in the English top-flight. However, Ipswich did not reassign the number to the players.
The jersey with Sheeran's and the number 17 have been one of the highest selling shirts for the Ipswich-based unit, serving as an indicator to the love the English singer receives form fans of his boyhood club.

Ipswich, ho made the ascend to the Premier League following their promotion from the Championship in the 2023/24 season, could not weather the storms of the most dominant football league in the world as the Tractor Boys could only manage a 19th place finish accumulating a mere 22 points in their 38 outings in the bygone season. As a result they were subject to the drop and were relegated to the second tier of the national football pyramid alongside Southampton and Leicester City, who finished 20th and 18th respectively.

Benjamin Sesko has great potential, will feel at home in Manchester United: Amorim
New Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has all the attributes needed to help bolster their attack, manager Ruben Amorim said as he hopes to unlock the 22-year-old Slovenian's full potential after his big-money move to Old Trafford. Sesko completed his 76.5-million-euro (USD 89-million) switch from German side RB Leipzig to United on Saturday, with a further 8.5 million euros in bonuses. He signed a contract until 2030 to complete a new-look front three alongside fellow close-season signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Slovenia international, capped 41 times, scored 39 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig. A new chapter ready to be written in the Benjamin Sesko story 📖 — Premier League (@premierleague) August 9, 2025 'He has the characteristics that we needed,' Amorim told MUTV on Saturday. 'Ben is a player - with all the information that we have - that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! 'So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, and good on the ball. I think he has great potential. He can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. 'He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him.' Sesko was introduced at Old Trafford before Saturday's friendly match against Italian side Fiorentina, which United won 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1. 'He is going to a new building (at Carrington), which is also important. Things are getting better, but in the end, we need to win games.' United, which has spent around 200 million pounds ($270 million) following its 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season — its lowest in the top flight in 51 years — begins its new league campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17.
