Security will be heightened for Steelers Fest and "Friday Night Lights" practice on Friday

CBS Newsa day ago
A record crowd of fans is expected on Friday in Latrobe for Steelers Fest at Legion Keener Park and the team's Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium.
Because of the recent shooting in New York City that was targeting workers at the NFL offices in Midtown Manhattan, security at both events will be heightened.
City of Latrobe Police Department Chief Richard Bosco said fans should expect to see a lot of uniformed officers, police dogs and drones in and around the event.
"We will have remote cameras," Bosco said. "We will have participation from the school police, from the Steelers security teams, our own police department, the county park police will be there assisting us with bomb dogs, and we will sweep the areas before during and after the games."
The chief said that everyone coming in for the Steelers' practice should treat it as though they are going to an NFL game on any given Sunday.
Bosco also said that part of the security precautions for Friday will be to close traffic to the stadium at 5 p.m. when gates open, which means, unless someone has a handicap placard, most of the 4,000-plus fans coming out for Steelers Fest during the day and the 12,000-plus fans expected for Friday Night Lights will have to park in town and walk to the stadium.
"All of our parking facilities, our on-street parking meters and our parking garages and our parking lots will be free parking, (fans) don't have to pay for the parking," Bosco said. "We do want people to use the accessible street parking, parking garages and the parking lots and if at all possible, please stay out of the residential areas because obviously people coming home from work will need a place to park their cars."
Above all, the chief said attendees should give themselves extra time if they are coming to Latrobe on Friday, have patients, and if they see something unusual or out of the norm, report it to local police.
Steelers Fest runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday Night Lights starts at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m.

Rays place All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on injured list with a fractured left wrist

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays placed All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on the 10-day injured list Friday with a fractured left wrist. Aranda was injured Thursday in a collision with New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. Aranda said the injury did not feel 'catastrophic' and he's hopeful he'll return this season, although the Rays cautioned he won't be able to use the wrist for approximately three weeks. Aranda's wrist has been immobilized in an air cast and he's scheduled to undergo more imaging at the three-week mark. At that point, the Rays will reassess his return timetable. 'Let's see how the bone heals," manager Kevin Cash said before Friday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I think he has re-imaging in about three weeks, but we will continue to remain optimistic.' Stanton hit a soft grounder in the fifth inning to third baseman Junior Caminero, who charged in on wet grass to field the ball. Aranda reached for Caminero's wide toss that sailed into the runner, and his left wrist appeared to hit Stanton's left shoulder. Aranda, a first-time All-Star, is batting .316 with 12 home runs, 54 RBIs in 103 games this season. He has a .394 on-base percentage, and an .872 OPS, making him one of the majors' most dangerous hitters. Cash shifted Yandy Díaz to first base in Aranda's absence. The Rays reinstated Ha-Seong Kim from the IL and recalled Tristan Gray from Triple-A Durham. Trade deadline acquisitions Griffin Jax and Hunter Feduccia were active for Friday night's game. ___ AP MLB:

Actor Gary Busey pleads guilty to sexual offence at horror convention

Actor Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to a sexual offence stemming from an appearance at a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, according to his representatives and court records. The 81-year-old Buddy Holly star's manager, Ron Sampson, said in an email on Friday that the actor admitted to touching a woman's buttocks 'over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op'. Busey entered a guilty plea to a single count of criminal sexual contact during a virtual hearing in state court in Camden on Thursday. The actor had been accused of inappropriately touching at least three women at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, a South Jersey town and suburb of Philadelphia. Organisers of the event acknowledged at the time that an unnamed celebrity guest was 'removed from the convention and instructed not to return' and that affected attendees were encouraged to contact police. Busey had been scheduled as a featured guest for all three days of the event. He was initially charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment. Busey's lawyer Blair Zwillman confirmed on Friday that the other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The actor faces up to five years' probation and fines when he is sentenced September 18. 'In my view Mr Busey was 'overcharged' probably based on his star status,' Mr Zwillman said in an email. 'He could have just as easily been charged with the disorderly persons offence of harassment by 'offensive touching'.' Camden County prosecutors did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Friday. Busey is widely known as a character actor, largely in supporting roles, though he came to attention and was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for playing the title role in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story.

Young leads at weather-hit PGA Wyndham Championship

American Cameron Young had a one-shot lead with three holes remaining when play was suspended Friday in the weather-hit PGA Tour Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Young had seven birdies without a bogey through 15 holes and was 14-under for the tournament, one stroke in front of defending champion Aaron Rai of England, who was 13-under with five holes to play. Rai, who had to play a marathon Sunday on the way to victory last year after delays earlier in the week, said he hoped the tournament would get back on schedule quickly when play resumes on Saturday. Thunderstorms had halted play for a second time on Friday afternoon when organizers opted to halt it for the day. "Sometimes it's a nice way just to reset and refresh and go into tomorrow with a new mindset," Rai said. "And obviously there's a positive of just keeping the momentum going if the delay doesn't happen, but you've got to make the best of whatever situation comes your way, really." Mac Meissner and South Korean Im Sung-jae were the leaders in the clubhouse on 12-under 128. Meissner had eight birdies in his seven-under 63 and Im had an eagle and four birdies in his six-under 64. The tournament is the last regular-season event before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin with the St. Jude Championship next week. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings advance to the playoffs. bb/js
