Channel Ten sacked ‘blindsided' Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia through 'clinical and cold' email, sources reveal

Sky News AU2 days ago
Sources have revealed the shocking truth about how Channel Ten really sacked "blindsided" Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia.
A Ten spokesperson on Monday confirmed the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia V The World will be the last series hosted by La Paglia, who already filmed the show before its premiere in the coming months.
'JLP has brought a unique blend of authority, intelligence and empathy to his role as host of Australian Survivor over the last 10 years," the spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au in a statement.
"Acting as a referee and managing the intense pressure of the game while also acknowledging the human drama unfolding, JLP has been a compelling and memorable figure in the world of Survivor."
Despite no apparent signs of animosity between the network and La Paglia amid his sudden axing on Monday, the TV host appeared to suggest otherwise in a statement addressing his departure on Instagram.
"Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all…because it happened to me," the 55-year-old wrote in a caption on Monday.
"Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a bitch!"
La Paglia said he found out about his sacking through a phone call from Ten informing him Survivor was "going in a different direction" next season.
However, production first told the TV veteran he was out of a job via a "clinical" and "cold" email, Daily Mail Australia reported on Wednesday.
Before Ten had a chance to break the news to La Paglia, the host received an email from Survivor's production company, Endemol Shine Australia.
"He got an email first. That was the initial comms from EndemolShine,' a source told the publication.
"Then a call came from Ten, but by then it was already done.
"It's really not how you treat someone who's been part of the show for almost a decade."
La Paglia reportedly received the sudden email before he had finished filming Survivor: Australia vs. The World, set to air mid-to-late this year.
And the decision to let him go was made well before the season began filming last year but was kept a secret to avoid overshadowing the show.
One source said the move was "locked in" for months, but production wanted to "avoid backlash during the show's filming and post-promotion."
Former model and Australian Survivor: All-Stars champion David Genant is reportedly tipped to replace La Paglia as host of the game show.
Genant recently won $8.7 million on the US TV game show Deal or No Deal Island and is set to compete in Survivor: Australia V The World.
The new season will mark the TV star's third time on the series, and he has previously hosted popular travel shows Rush and Getaway.
Neverthelss, a production insider told Daily Mail Australia not everyone is convinced he's La Paglia's best replacement.
"He doesn't fit the brief," the insider said.
"He's charismatic, sure - but Survivor needs someone with gravitas. David is not Jonathan, and viewers will notice that."
The massive shakeup at 10 comes as Australian Survivor struggles with a rating slump.
The last season, Brains vs. Brawn II, saw viewership dip to 486,000 total overnight viewers, a far cry from the many millions it attracted in its prime.
Survivor features a group of contestants known as "castaways" living in an isolated outdoor location in Samoa.
There, they must provide for themselves by gathering food, water, fire, and shelter while competing in challenges for awards and immunity.
The castaways are progressively eliminated by their peers, with the last member crowned Sole Survivor and awarded the grand prize of $500,000.

Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman movie reunion will ‘of course' happen, James Gunn says

James Gunn has said that Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman will 'of course' meet in the DC Universe (DCU). The 58-year-old director is set to kick off the DCU on the big screen with the upcoming blockbuster Superman, and while Gunn insisted the superhero will not cross over with Batman and Wonder Woman in the next film, the moviemaker stressed the iconic trio will eventually team up in a future project in the franchise. When Deadline asked the DC head if there was a chance Superman could cross paths with Batman and Wonder Woman in the future, he said: 'Of course, yeah! But not in the next movie.' After the outlet quizzed the Guardians of the Galaxy director on whether the team-up could happen in the next few years, he said: 'You have to remember all this stuff is talks inside my head. 'So there's a lot of chatter in my head that does a lot of things! But the DCU is chatter in my head, not talks!' This comes after Gunn said he thought Adria Arjona would be a 'great' Wonder Woman, He told Extra: 'I follow Adria on Instagram but everybody came out [and said], 'He just followed her, that means she's Wonder Woman.' She'd be a great Wonder Woman, by the way. 'She was in a movie that I made seven years ago. We've been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn't just follow her.' Gunn also teased Superman may have already crossed paths with Batman in the DCU. Speaking about how the Man of Steel would react to meeting the Dark Knight in the DCU, The Suicide Squad filmmaker said: 'Well, first of all, we don't know if he's already seen a man dressed up as a bat. 'But I think that he'd probably see a kindred spirit in that [here's] another crazy person wearing a crazy costume [albeit] with a very different intent.' DC already has an on-screen Caped Crusader with Robert Pattinson's The Batman, though the movie and its 2027 sequel The Batman: Part II are Elseworlds projects and do not take place in the main DCU timeline. The idea of bringing Pattinson's Dark Knight into the DCU and portraying the character in the upcoming Batman movie The Brave and the Bold had been theorised, but Gunn has since rejected it. During an interview with Variety, he said: 'I wouldn't rule anything out. He could show up in something else. But the actor doesn't exist [for Batman in the DCU yet].' Gunn's Superman - which lands in cinemas on 11 July - follows the titular hero (David Corenswet) as he tries to balance his human and Kryptonian lives, all while Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) does everything in his power to bring about his downfall. The film will also introduce a range of other beloved DC heroes, such as Guy Gardner's Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Despite his new position as the DCU lead, Corenswet previously insisted he doesn't know what Superman's future will be in the franchise after the film. When Esquire Espana asked the 31-year-old actor what he would be doing in the DCU post-Superman, he said: 'I don't think it's up to me to answer that. It's up to James Gunn, who has a terrific imagination, and he is just there where they need [him] to be to say what was written, although that doesn't always happen.'

Country music legend Tim McGraw sparks fears over unrecognisable new look

Don't miss out on the headlines from Music. Followed categories will be added to My News. Country music legend Tim McGraw looked unrecognisable as he clutched a cane in his latest photo shared on Instagram. Fans had some concerns following a social media post showing the singer, 58 and his wife, fellow country music legend Faith Hill, 57, in Denmark. The pair were pictured sitting at an outdoor cafe in Copenhagen, which is where they are staying as they support their daughter Audrey, 23, on tour. The couple looked loved-up as they smiled for the camera, with smitten Tim writing next to the sweet snap: 'Hangin' with my baby in Copenhagen to see @audreymcgraw on tour with the fabulous @brandicarlile.' The picture sparked fears for some fans. Picture: Instagram. But despite the sweet photo, fans were left concerned for Tim as he was pictured with a cane. Taking to the comments, one fan wrote: 'Beautiful photo. Why do you have a cane? Are you OK?' one fan asked. Another follow said: '@thetimmcgraw praying for your recovery.' Someone else wrote: 'Need the full story on the cane, my man.' While another added: 'One thing for sure … doesn't look like you.' Tim is yet to reveal why he is having to use a cane, but he did previously open up about having ongoing back and knee issues. Country music legend Tim McGraw is married to Faith Hill. Speaking on the Bobby Bones podcast in May, he revealed: 'I had had a back surgery before tour last year, and that sort of went south on me at the beginning of the tour, and sort of compensating for that my knees went out like three weeks into the tour.' Back in 2018, Tim shocked concertgoers after he collapsed on stage during a gig in Ireland. The country music star fell to his knees during a performance of his song Humble And Kind at Dublin's Country2Country festival. After he collapsed Tim's wife Faith came out to address the crowd, and revealed that her husband was 'super dehydrated from travelling so much'. She then revealed that she 'had taken the decision to have him not come back out on stage'. Tim's spokesman said at the time: 'Tim McGraw was suffering from Dublin this evening at the C2C show. 'He was attended to by local medical staff on-site and will be fine. 'He and Faith thank everyone for their love and support and look forward to seeing their Irish fans again soon.' Tim has previously revealed that music is his 'saviour.' He said: 'Anything that's ever happened good in my life has come from music. 'So it's a treasure to me. Whether I want to do it continually, whether I want to stop doing it, any of those things, it's my saviour in a lot of ways.' Away from the country music scene, Tim teamed up with rapper Nelly for the 2004 hit Over and Over, which reached number one in the UK. He also starred alongside Sandra Bullock in the 2009 film The Blind Side. Last year, Tim won high praise when he collaborated with Post Malone on the hit song, Wrong Ones. Michael Madsen remembered as 'mischief wrapped in tenderness'

Michael Madsen has been remembered as "mischief wrapped in tenderness" by his actress sister Virginia Madsen following his shock death. The 67-year-old actor was pronounced dead on Thursday (03.07.25) after being found unresponsive at his home in Malibu, California with his manager Ron Smith telling that 'cardiac arrest' appeared to be the cause of death - and he has now been honoured by Candyman star Virginia, who paid tribute in a message posted on Instagram. She shared a picture of the siblings alongside their mother and wrote: "My brother Michael has left the stage. He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. "A father, a son, a brother - etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark. We're not mourning a public figure. We're not mourning a myth - but flesh and blood and ferocious heart. "Who stormed through life loud, brilliant, and half on fire. Who leaves us echoes - gruff, brilliant, unrepeatable - half legend, half lullaby. "I'll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him. I'll miss the boy he was before the legend. I miss my big brother." Virginia went on to thank fans for their well wishes and explained a plan to "celebrate" Michael's life will be revealed in due course. She added: "Thank you to everyone reaching out with love and memory. In time, we'll share how we plan to celebrate his life. "But for now - we stay close, and let the silence say what words can't - Virginia Madsen on behalf of the Madsen family." Fellow screen star Sharon Stone shared her sorrow in the comments section, writing: "My sincere condolences to you and your family." Actor Billy Baldwin paid tribute in a message posted on X, writing: "Fitting that Michael Madsen would pass away on 4th of July weekend. He was no firecracker … a total stick of dynamite on screen and in life. Rest easy my friend." Walton Goggins, who appeared opposite Michael in Quentin Tarantino's 2015 movie The Hateful Eight, shared his thoughts on Instagram, writing: "Michael Madsen … this man … this artist … this poet … this rascal …F****** ICON …. "Aura like no one else. Ain't enough words so I'll just say this …. I love you buddy. A H8TER forever." In a post on X, Jennifer Tilly - who starred alongside the actor in 1994 movie The Getaway - wrote: "Michael was one of my favorite actors I ever worked with. "The Getaway was very early in my career and he made me feel safe and supported. He was wildly audacious and rambunctious with his character choices, and had a wicked sense of humor. "I don't recall ever laughing so much on a film set in my life. A huge talent. Gone too soon. Rip Michael Madsen."
