India achieves 50% non-fossil fuel power capacity, 5 years ahead of target

Time of India14-07-2025
India has made a significant leap in its clean energy transition, achieving 50 per cent non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity, five years ahead of its ambitious 2030 target under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs).
Union New & Renewable Energy Minister
Pralhad Joshi
announced this achievement on Monday, highlighting the nation's accelerated progress towards a sustainable energy future.
Minister Joshi took the social media platform X and said, "Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a major climate commitment has been fulfilled.'
India's total installed power capacity currently stands at 484.8 GW, with 242.8 GW now sourced from non-fossil fuels. This is particularly significant given India's international commitments to increase its non-fossil fuel-based power generation and its ambitious national target of establishing 500 GW of renewable energy-based electricity generation by 2030.
Over the years, the government has launched a number of flagship programmes such as PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, solar park development, and the National
Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy
, which have laid a strong foundation for this transformation.

UK: Lord Rami Ranger lauds PM Modi's leadership, welcomes FTA with India

London: British Indian businessman Lord Rami Ranger on Wednesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership while terming the possible signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as "a major development" and a "win-win situation" for both India and the United Kingdom. Speaking exclusively with the IANS just ahead of PM Modi's arrival in the country on a two-day visit, Ranger, an Indian-origin member (Peer) of the upper house of the UK, spoke highly of the development that has taken place in India over the past decade. He emphasised that the UK's economy will also witness a jump after collaborating with India. "It will be a very significant day as the Prime Minister will sign a Free Trade Agreement with the country that ruled over India for 200 years. We were once their colony, and today we stand as equals. This is a major development and it is the result of Prime Minister Modi's leadership. We are witnessing development in India in the past 10 years, like the 'Make in India' initiative. There will be transfer of technology along with the Free Trade Agreement. The FTA is made in heaven and a win-win situation benefitting many nations. The British economy will also jump after plugging in with the Indian economy. Whole world will benefit from it," said the 78-year-old Ranger. He mentioned that the Free Trade Agreement will bring stability to the markets of both countries and help traders on both sides. Earlier in the day, PM Modi departed on a two-day visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of his British counterpart Keir Starmer. It will be PM Modi's fourth trip to the UK since assuming office. During the visit, PM Modi will meet Starmer and also call upon King Charles III. In May, PM Modi and Starmer announced the successful conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK FTA, which is expected to double the trade between the two countries to $120 billion by 2030. Under the agreement, 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK will get the benefit of zero duty, an official statement detailed. "We all are very excited and extremely happy that Prime Minister Modi is coming to London. I only wish he had more time for everyone, for all Indians, because they are eagerly waiting to celebrate with him... What he is doing for our nation, we are really proud of him," said London based businessman, Ramesh Arora. Over the years, the historical ties between India and the UK have transformed into a robust, multi-faceted, mutually beneficial relationship. The relationship was elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. There has been enormous growth across all sectors including trade and economy, defence and security, climate, green energy, health, education, people-to-people ties. On PM Modi's UK visit, Jayu Shah of Friends of India Society International (FISI), UK said, "We will warmly welcome PM Modi in the UK. The trade agreement negotiations have been going on for 20 years. Now, PM Modi has managed to make the deal and the two nations will sign it. India is 'Vishwaguru', the superpower and all nations need it. India is the largest investor in the UK, businesswise". PM Modi, in his departure statement, highlighted that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has witnessed significant progress in recent years witnessing growth in a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties. "During my meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, we will have the opportunity to further enhance our economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and jobs creation in both countries. I also look forward to calling on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit," he added.

Govt tightens cybersecurity norms for inverters used in rooftop solar scheme

Amid cybersecurity threats emanating from China, the Union new and renewable energy ministry has mandated all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) supplying inverters under the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' to connect their inverters to the ministry's national servers and software platform. The ministry will notify the date for implementation of the directive. In a notification, the ministry said that the integration of 10 million rooftop solar systems under the scheme would also introduce challenges regarding grid stability and cybersecurity concerns. It added that inverter communication modules that transmit data to servers outside India not only pose risks of unauthorized control but also threaten national energy sovereignty by exposing sensitive power consumption and generation data. 'All OEMs enlisted for supplying inverters under the PMSG: MBY scheme shall mandatorily connect their inverters directly to national servers and software managed by the ministry or any other agency designated by the ministry, with effect from the date to be notified,' it said. Inverters are essential components of solar energy systems, as they convert the direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) that can be used by homes and businesses. They also facilitate the interaction between solar energy systems and the electrical grid, allowing the transmission of excess energy back into the grid. The ministry held multiple rounds of deliberations with stakeholders to implement a framework to track the generation benefits of rooftop solar installations. The discussions also deliberated over centralization of rooftop solar data on a national software platform hosted on servers located in India and managed by the ministry or any other government agency, in a bid to ensure effective monitoring of millions of inverters aggregating large capacity and ensure grid security and stability. The government has also mandated that all inverter communication devices, or dongles, or data loggers deployed under the scheme shall have machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM communication protocol to enable a secure and reliable data transmission. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has been under implementation since February 2024, and as of 15 July, over 1,545,000 households have been covered under the scheme. Under the scheme, government plans to install rooftop solar systems on 10 million houses and add 30GW of solar power capacity. The developments come in the backdrop of undocumented communication equipment found inside some Chinese-made inverter devices in May, raising security concerns. In the past few years, the government has taken a number of steps to lower its dependence on Chinese imports in the renewable energy space. In this course, it has increased import duties on solar modules and cells and introduced incentives to boost local manufacturing of these products.

Why Agricultural Land Could Be Your Smartest Investment in India- The Untapped Goldmine of Indian Real Estate

With food demand skyrocketing and land supply shrinking, owning farmland isn't just for farmers anymore—it's becoming the go-to strategy for smart investors seeking high returns with low risk. Here's why Farmland should be in your portfolio, along with must-know tips to invest safely. 5 Powerful Benefits of Investing in Agricultural Land: 1. Evergreen Demand = Guaranteed Returns India needs to feed 1.7 billion people by 2050, but: - Urbanisation is swallowing 3 lakh acres of farmland yearly (ICAR report) - Climate change is reducing crop yields in traditional breadbaskets This supply crunch makes fertile Agricultural Land one of the few assets that appreciates reliably, with historical returns of 10-15% annually in growth corridors. 2. Beat Inflation Like a Pro While inflation erodes bank FD returns, farmland: - Grows in value as food prices rise - Generates 3-8% rental yields from farmers (better than most rental properties) - Qualifies for tax-free capital gains if reinvested under Section 54B 3. Government Goldmine The Modi government is pouring money into farming through: - PM-KISAN (₹6,000/year direct transfers) - 100% FDI allowed in farm infrastructure - Subsidies for drip irrigation, solar pumps, and organic farming 4. Outperform Urban Real Estate Compare the two: Parameter City Property Agricultural Land Entry Price ₹1Cr+ for small plot ₹5-20L/acre (semi urban) Appreciation Stagnant in many areas 10-25% near growth zones Additional Income Only rentals Crops + leasing + tourism 5. Farmhouse Boom Wealthy Indians are snapping up farmland for: - Luxury Farmhouse retreats (50- 150 km from metros) - Organic food startups (₹500/kg for exotic veggies) - Solar power plants (25-year govt. contracts) 5 Crucial Precautions You Should Take 1. Ensure Dispute-Free Property - Verify 7/12 extract & 8A mutation papers - Check for family disputes (common in inherited land) - Confirm no bank liens or pending litigation 2. Location Intelligence High-growth zones: - Within 100km of metros - Along expressways - Near upcoming airports Red flags: - Water-scarce regions - Naxal-affected districts - Restricted tribal areas 3. Soil & Water Audit - Test for soil nutrients (labs charge ₹2,000-5,000) - Check groundwater levels (avoid areas with >500ft borewells) - Verify electricity availability for pumps 4. Legal Safeguards - Non-agriculturists can't buy in J&K, Himachal - Tribal land requires special permissions in many states - Conversion charges apply for farmhouse construction 5. Exit Strategy - Keep land within municipal limits for easier resale - Prefer areas with clear zoning policies - Document all access roads (avoid landlocked plots) Bottom line: Agricultural Land investment offers what no other asset can: ✔ Inflation-proof income ✔ Explosive appreciation near cities ✔ Multiple profit streams (crops, leasing, development) Ideal for: - NRIs building India portfolios - Business owners diversifying beyond stocks - Young investors starting with ₹5-20L If you're looking for an ideal investment in farmland, then look no further than the Mruganayani Project by Kapil Farms.
