How much does LSU football need to beat Clemson in week one? Is it a must win?

USA Today29-07-2025
LSU football reports for fall camp this week. The Tigers are one month away from opening the 2025 season at Clemson -- yet another opener vs. a big-name opponent.
This will mark LSU's sixth consecutive kickoff vs. a Power Four program. LSU has come up short in the previous five openers, a stretch dating back to 2020. LSU enters every season with expectations. It's rarely national championship or bust, but LSU expects to compete for a playoff spot on an annual basis.
Over the last five years, that preseason optimism has quickly faded to something else as 0-1 starts have been the norm.
And now, as LSU prepares to go on the road and face a Clemson team loaded with potential All-Americans and first-round picks, there's fear that a familiar story could unfold.
It begs the question: Is LSU's week one game at Clemson a must-win?
Let's start with the playoff implications. Starting 1-0 with a win over a top-right team gives LSU a signature before the calendar hits week two. That's a big deal when you look at how the rest of LSU's schedule shapes up. It's a typical SEC grind that includes meetings with Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida, and Ole Miss. Two of those contests are on the road.
In all likelihood, LSU isn't going 4-0 against that bunch of teams. A win vs. Clemson allows LSU to take another loss and remain near the top of the College Football Playoff rankings. Especially if Clemson goes on to be as good as many predict.
LSU hasn't gotten the luxury of that margin for error in recent years. Week one losses forced LSU to play the rest of September with a cloud over its head. Every game suddenly became a must-win game. It's hard to play with that type of pressure every week. If LSU can pull off a week one win, we might see a Tigers team that looks much more comfortable the rest of the way.
Aside from playoff implications, there's the narrative.
If Brian Kelly drops another season opener, there will be rumblings about his job security. Fair or not. I tend to think he's a good coach and one game shouldn't define his 2025 season, but talk will persist nonetheless.
Kelly knows that, and he's embraced the pressure of week one this offseason. The entire LSU team has. Beating Clemson has been the sole goal of LSU's offseason preparations.
In the era of the 12-team playoff, it's hard to call a week one game a must-win. A team with LSU's schedule can go 9-3 and remain in the playoff discussion. And if LSU goes 10-2, the Tigers are practically a lock.
At the same time, the magnitude of this game can't be understated. LSU is riding into the 2025 season with a wealth of momentum, and another 0-1 star will let the air out of that balloon.
Clemson isn't a true must-win for LSU -- but it's the next closest thing.

76ers' Joel Embiid makes surprise appearance at Phillies-Tigers game

The post 76ers' Joel Embiid makes surprise appearance at Phillies-Tigers game appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Philadelphia 76ers have high hopes of becoming a serious contender in the Eastern Conference next season. If that is going to happen, they need to have a healthy Joel Embiid in the lineup for the majority of the season. The big center is taking his conditioning with the 76ers seriously as he has been rehabbing from his April knee surgery. It is the second time he has had surgery on his knee in the last 14 months. Embiid went through much of his rehab work in the morning and once his rehab work for the day was completed, Embiid decided to show his support for another Philadelphia sports team. The big center headed to Citizens Bank Park for the Phillies' home game against the Detroit Tigers. Embiid was clearly noticed on the field, and the 7-0, 280-pound veteran appeared to be relaxed and happy as the interleague game between the two division leaders got underway. He had a big smile on his face as he conversed with players before the game. Sixers hoping that Embiid can give the Sixers a healthy and memorable season Embiid has been one of the most dangerous and impactful players in the NBA when he has been able to stay healthy. However, he played in just 19 games for the Sixers last year. He was also limited to less than half their games in the 2023-24 season. A relatively healthy Embiid played 66 games and won the league Most Valuable Player award in 2022-23. He averaged 33.1 points along with 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per season. Embiid was nearly as good in the season before as he averaged 30.6 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists. That allowed him to finish second in the MVP voting. Embiid is a seven-time All-Star, and a five-time All-NBA player. He has also made the NBA's All-Defensive team three times. Embiid may have been at Citizens Bank to support the home team, but he was unable to witness a victory. The Tigers were able to secure a 7-5 victory. Slugger Kyle Schwarber had a rare off day as he was 0 for 4, but teammate Bryce Harper was 3 for 4 with a home run. Nick Castellanos also blasted a long ball for the home team. Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal picked up the victory and improved to 11-3 on the season. He struck out 10 batters and did not walk any of the Phillies. Colt Keith, Gleyber Torres, Kerry Carpenter and Javier Baez hit home runs in support of Skubal. Boise State is only Group of Five team ranked in preseason poll. Are they losing respect?

Spencer Danielson is glad his Boise State team is back in the conversation, 'which it should be.' Following their first College Football Playoff appearance, the Broncos are No. 25 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, the first time they will start the season ranked since 2018. 'It's awesome you know that people or writers or coaches think that we're going to be good. We should be,' Danielson told USA TODAY Sports. 'It's Boise State.' But the Broncos' spot and admission reveals a noticeable fact about the Top 25: not only are they the last team in the poll, but are the only Group of Five team in it. That comes a year after no Group of Five teams started the season ranked, only the fifth time in the 35-year history USA TODAY Sports has administered the coaches poll. Which begs the question: Are the non-power schools not getting enough respect, in a world that is becoming far less catered toward them? It wasn't long ago when Boise State and others annually occupied higher spots in the preseason poll. In 2010, the Broncos started at No. 5 and TCU and Utah, then members of the Mountain West, were No. 7 and No. 24, respectively, marking the only time three Group of Five teams started the season ranked in consecutive years. In 2011, Boise State was seventh and the Horned Frogs were 15th. Since then, it's become rare for schools outside the power conferences to be ranked high in the preseason. Boise State in 2013 (19th), Houston in 2016 (13th) and Cincinnati in 2021 (No. 10) are the only times Group of Five teams have ranked in the top 20. After 14 consecutive seasons from 2000-13 of being represented in the poll, the non-powers have been left out in 2014 and 2024. It's not like Group of Five teams aren't doing bad either. At least one of them finished in the final top 25 in 33 of the 35 past seasons, and multiple were in 32 of them. So what happened? Impact of conference expansion and transfer portal Danielson has seen this change unfold being with the Broncos since 2017, starting as a graduate assistant and rising to interim head coach during the 2023 season and then getting job permanently. He cited the impact of the transfer portal as a key factor. One thing you'll notice about those teams that crashed the BCS party were they were teams built on roster retention. Nowadays, successful Group of Five teams often get stripped with standout players getting lucrative offers to play for Power Four teams. 'I think back with Boise State years ago, where it's like they would have these teams that would be really successful, and then you return all your players, right? So you're ranked in the top 10, top five, because of that,' he said. 'I think the transfer portal has something to do with that.' It's worth noting many names that heavily populated the polls – Brigham Young, TCU, Utah, Houston, Central Florida and Cincinnati – all leveled up the power conferences. The Cinderella darlings are now with the big boys. Boise State is moving to the Pac-12 in 2026, but it's no longer considered a power conference. And the big boys dominate the 2025 preseason poll. Led by No. 1 Texas, the SEC makes up four of the top nine spots and nine in the Top 25, with the Big Ten owning six spots. The SEC nearly had 10 in the poll. Oklahoma had the most points of teams not making the Top 25. The Sooners were 25 points behind Boise State. Had their positions flipped, it would've meant the preseason poll didn't include a school from outside the power conferences in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1995-96. Even though the Broncos lost Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty, Danielson believes the success of last season is why the Broncos made the list. He'll congratulate his team about making it because it hasn't happened in seven years, but remind them 'heavy is the crown.' Boise State knows finish is more important that starting spot As the lone Group of Five team ranked, the Broncos have an early edge toward securing the automatic bid into the playoff should they win the Mountain West title again. But Danielson knows it doesn't guarantee anything. Last season, Boise State went from unranked to finishing No. 9, its highest spot in the final since 2011. Meanwhile, 13 teams in the 2024 preseason poll finished unranked. Danielson recalled after Boise State lost to Oregon in the second game of the season, 'everybody knew we probably can't drop another one.' They Broncose didn't en route to securing the No. 3 seed in the playoff by finishing ahead of Big 12 champion Arizona State and ACC champion Clemson in the final playoff rankings. However, the preseason poll illustrates the uphill battle the Group of Five teams have to prove they are worthy of national recognition, while Power Four teams will continue to fill up the rankings. Danielson is aware how strong of an impression his team has to make, even at Boise State where 'there's always high expectations.' 'Group of Five, probably you got to lose less, right? It's just the reality of what you see how college football is,' he said. For now, the Broncos are still carrying the flag for Group of Five teams, as they have done for 20 years. But while they present optimism for the level, there are plenty of teams that are hoping to take their place. Memphis, Army, Tulane, Navy, UNLV and Buffalo all received votes in the preseason poll. Others could get in the mix, including South Florida, which hosts Boise State in Week 1. 'I think there's a lot of really good teams out there,' Danielson said. 'There's a lot of really good Power Four teams. There's a lot of really good Group of Five teams, but there's only room for 25 seats right now, and that's going to ebb and flow. 'Every single one of us have an opportunity to play in the College Football Playoff. I think as long as that is always the case, that's what makes college football amazing.'

Texas A&M's 2025 schedule considered one of the Top 10 toughest slates per USA TODAY

Texas A&M's 2025 schedule is considered one of the toughest slates in the SEC, as the Aggies will face LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas on the road, while their Week 3 rematch vs. Notre Dame in South Bend could define the program's season. For second-year head coach Mike Elko, last season's late-season failures on the road with consecutive losses at South Carolina and Auburn were too similar to the previous regime under Jimbo Fisher. On Wednesday, A&M's schedule was recognized as one of the toughest nationally, according to USA TODAY writer Jordan Mendoza, who released his top 10 most demanding college football schedules based on the recent US LBM preseason top 25 rankings. Texas A&M is No. 21 in the rankings, which was expected given the lack of national confidence in starting quarterback Marcel Reed. At the same time, the rest of the 2025 roster, including 14 transfer additions, is deep and talented enough to win nine or ten games, despite the schedule. While Florida's schedule is considered the toughest in the country, coming in at No. 1, Texas A&M's schedule is ranked 7th, primarily due to the road games I listed above. "The No. 21 ranked team in the preseason poll will be fighting all season to make sure it stays in the Top 25. The Aggies have a highly anticipated non-conference matchup on Sept. 13 at No. 5 Notre Dame. From there, there's four other ranked matchup sprinkled throughout the rest of the season, with No. 17 Florida visiting on Oct. 11 and a trip to face No. 9 LSU on Oct. 25. No. 13 South Carolina comes into town Nov. 15, and the season ends with the first trip to Austin since 2010 to play No. 1 Texas." Texas A&M needs to win at least one game between Notre Dame, LSU, and Texas, while defending home field against Florida and South Carolina is crucial to ending the regular season with a chance at reaching the playoff. Yes, Aggie fans would love revenge, especially on the road against Texas after last season's 17-7 loss in Kyle Field, but for that game to truly matter, outside of bragging rights, the path I laid out is the only way forward.
