Warning to drivers as more than 300 roads in Glasgow suburb hit with new 20mph speed limit
Speed limit changes are being rolled out across Scotland as part of a major shake-up 20'S PLENTY Warning to drivers as more than 300 roads in Glasgow suburb hit with new 20mph speed limit Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MORE than 300 roads in a Glasgow suburb are about to be hit with a new 20 miles per hour speed limit. It will come into effect on September 8 in Bearsden as council chiefs roll out the changes in a bid to improve road safety and reduce speeding. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 More than 300 roads in Bearsden will be affected by the change Credit: PA The new limit will cover all or part of over 300 roads in the town -including residential streets and main roads like the A81 Milngavie Road and the A739 Switchback/Bearsden Road. A full list of the affected roads is available on the East Dumbartonshire Council's website. Anyone who wants to challenge the new 20mph order can lodge an application with the Court of Session within six weeks of July 24. Meanwhile, a temporary road closure will affect Station Road in Bearsden from August 4 to September 22 to allow works to be carried out. It will affect the town's Station Road between its junction with the A809 Drymen Road and the entrance to the Co-op car park. No vehicles will be allowed through, except those directly involved in the works. Diversion signs will be put in place. Temporary traffic lights incorporating a pedestrian crossing will be in operation and manually controlled from 7am to 7pm throughout the entirety of the works. Drivers are being urged to plan ahead as traffic delays are likely. Last year, we told how speed limit changes were being rolled out across Scotland after councils bagged new funding to make the nation's roads safer. Scots driver speeds off after smashing into car - then ploughs motor into pillar Scotland's 32 councils are sharing £14 million from the Scottish Government, with some of the cash earmarked for lowering speed limits on more roads. Around £4 million is specifically going towards the 20mph rollouts, with the Government urging councils to consult residents thoroughly before making changes. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop has raised the alarm as road deaths this year are running 26% higher than the same period last year. She said: 'Road safety is a top priority for the Scottish Government, which is why we are making a record investment of £36 million this financial year towards initiatives that reduce road casualties. 'This £14 million investment underlines our commitment to supporting our road safety partners to implement schemes that protect the public. 'I'm pleased to see all 32 of Scotland's local authorities receive this support as we work towards our ambitious safety goals. 'The release of our 20mph implementation guide will help local authorities introduce lower speed limits consistently across Scotland, creating safer streets for everyone. 'Our goal of making Scotland's roads the safest in the world by 2030 is unwavering.'

Thaís Bonatti, 30, was cycling to her restaurant job in Araçatuba, Brazil, when Fernando Augusto Fontes Rodrigues Júnior, 61, reportedly slammed his Ford Ranger pickup into her. She was rushed to hospital and underwent two surgeries on the same day, reportedly suffering two cardiac arrests during the first. Despite doctors' efforts, she died on Saturday. According to a police report, Rodrigues — a former civil court judge who is now a practicing lawyer — had just left a nightclub with the woman, believed to be a sex worker. Surveillance footage allegedly showed her nude and trying to get off his lap when the vehicle came to a stop near a supermarket. Moments later, Rodrigues is said to have stepped on the accelerator, sending the truck into Bonatti. By the time police arrived, the woman had dressed and fled the scene. Officers said Rodrigues smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and appeared unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter, but walked free on Friday after paying 40,000 Brazilian reais (around $7,150) in bail. The judge's family released a statement expressing sympathy, saying: 'Dr. Fernando's family expresses its deepest condolences and solidarity with the victim's family, reaffirming its absolute respect for their pain and mourning. Country music star, 24, dies in tragic accident after falling off back of pickup truck when it was suddenly started 'Since the incident, they have been offering support to the victim's family.' His legal team added that Rodrigues is barred from interviews due to the ongoing investigation, stressing: 'This silence is not only a legal obligation but also a sign of respect.' But Bonatti's family has been left reeling. Her brother, William de Andrade, blasted the decision to let Rodrigues walk free. He told local outlet TV TEM: 'At that time, I was looking for a coffin for my sister. He paid bail and left. 'He would certainly be sleeping with his family at that time, and I was at the hospital going through the formalities for my sister to be buried.' 8 The former judge, 61, reportedly slammed his Ford Ranger pickup into her in the early hours of Thursday Credit: Newsflash 8 She suffered two cardiac arrests during first surgery and died on Saturday Credit: Newsflash De Andrade remembered his sister as a lively and hardworking young woman known for performing at stand-up clubs across São Paulo state. 'She wasn't mean, 30 years old with the mind of a 20-year-old, besides being a happy and hard-working girl. 'This pain we are going through is very difficult, only God can help us bear it.' Tributes have since flooded Bonatti's social media. One friend wrote: 'I love you my friend.
