Guwahati: Two people were killed and several injured-on Thursday after police opened fire after the ongoing eviction drive at Paikan in Goalpara district turned violent.Eviction was carried out in the area on Saturday last despite that a group of people have been staying there. They clashed with a team of police and forest department officials who had gone there to carry out the eviction drive.Police said that a group of people pelted stones at the police. "At least five policemen were injured during the stone pelting. Two civilians' protestors were injured and one of them succumbed to his injuries," said Goalpara District Commissioner, Pradeep Kumar Timung.About 140 hectares of the Paikan Reserve Forest, spanning 711 hectares, had been encroached upon by settlers. These were cleared on Saturday. However, despite the eviction drives some people have not left the area saying that they had nowhere to go.These people said that they had stayed put in the area waiting for rehabilitation by the government.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in X, " Rahul Gandhi came to Assam and openly encouraged encroachers to occupy forest land. Emboldened by his reckless words, today a violent mob attacked our police and forest personnel while attempting to forcefully encroach upon the Paikan Reserve Forest. In the line of duty, 21 brave police officers and forest guards suffered grievous injuries. Left with no choice, the police had to open fire to restore order—leading to the unfortunate death of one encroacher. This is the disastrous legacy of Rahul Gandhi's one-day visit to Assam. His irresponsible rhetoric has directly endangered lives and disrupted peace in our state. The people of Assam will neither forget nor forgive this betrayal".Rahul addressed a rally in Assam on Wednesday. Sarma has said action will be taken if the cops are stopped from performing their duty.Sarma recently stated that the BJP led government in Assam in the last four years has so far cleared over 1.19 lakh bighas (160 square kms) of land from illegal encroachment. Nearly 50,000 people are evicted.Sarma said, 'Till now we have managed to clear 40 percent of the forest land from encroachment. Area under encroachment is over 63 lakh bighas and forest is 29 lakh bighas".Regional party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan lashed out at the BJP-led government, claiming that the narrative of protecting Assamese identity was being misused to mask large-scale land transfers to corporate houses.'This is not about identity — this is about deception. While the Chief Minister talks of freeing 6,000 bighas from so-called illegal Bangladeshis, the same government is allocating 55,000 bighas — including 49,000 bighas of indigenous land — to corporate houses,' Bhuyan said.

Rahul Gandhi dishonest, misleading people on SIR, claims Giriraj Singh
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for "misleading" people on the Special Intensive Revision of the draft voter rolls in Bihar. During a visit to his parliamentary constituency, Begusarai, the Union Minister said, "Rahul Gandhi is claiming that the names of 65 lakh people have been removed from the voter list, but he has not even filed affidavits of 65,000 people in the Supreme Court. He only does politics of lies and nonsense." The Union Minister compared Rahul Gandhi to a habitual liar, saying, "First he lies and then apologises. This time, too, he will apologise. He is trying to spread anarchy in the country." Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi's recent school visit in Karnataka, Singh said, "He was teaching in the school, but the real question is - when will he give the affidavit sought by the Election Commission?" He alleged that the Congress party has historically weakened democratic institutions. "Your party has been a party that has throttled democracy. You do not obey the orders of the Supreme Court or the High Court. You live with a dictatorial mentality," Giriraj Singh remarked. Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Singh described him as a "messiah of the poor" while calling Rahul Gandhi a politician "engaged only in lies and vote bank politics". Recalling the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, he said, "Rahul Gandhi's grandmother too did not obey the order of the Supreme Court and imposed Emergency in the country. These people are family thugs and are now coming to Bihar to cheat the voters. Their intention is to secure the votes of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis so that their politics continues." Giriraj Singh's statement comes ahead of Rahul Gandhi's Vote Adhikar Yatra, starting from Sasaram on Sunday.

Mass grave row: K'taka govt backs Dharmasthala, will take action against those who misled, says Minister Hebbalkar
In the wake of the politics and controversy surrounding the issue, the Karnataka government on Saturday reiterated that it stands firmly with the Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre and assured that action will be taken against those who misled the government in this regard. Speaking to the media in Udupi on Saturday, Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar said, 'Our government stands with Dharmasthala. The unknown complainant is narrating hundreds of fictitious stories. We will not spare those who misled the government.' 'Dharmasthala is a sacred place. Attempts are being made to defame it. Despite the excavation of burial sites one after another, nothing substantial has been found. The government will always stand with Dharmasthala,' she added. 'A bundle of lies was propagated on social media about the temple town. Later, the BJP picked up the allegations and is now shedding crocodile tears. The matter was discussed at both national and international levels. Those who indulged in defaming Dharmasthala will be punished,' Hebbalkar stated. 'The investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is progressing. Many have been levelling accusations and attacking the government. To put an end to speculations and allegations, Home Minister G. Parameshwara constituted the SIT. The issue was raked up deliberately, and it should end now,' she said. 'Let the BJP make claims on hundreds of issues. The party is behind the unknown complainant and the masked man. The SIT has been formed to put an end to all the drama surrounding this matter. I am a devotee of Lord Manjunatha. I have unflinching faith in the sacred Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre. I fully endorse the statement of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar,' Hebbalkar added. 'The government is committed and concerned. Dharmasthala is a place where 'Dharma' is upheld. Let all actions that bring disrepute to Dharmasthala come to an end,' she stated. She also urged that justice should be delivered in the Sowjanya murder case and in other cases reported from Dharmasthala. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated on Friday that action will be initiated against those who indulged in carrying out propaganda against the Hindu pilgrimage centre Dharmasthala in the alleged mass grave case. 'The government is considering taking action against those who have lied and spread misinformation in connection with the Dharmasthala case,' he had announced. Dy CM Shivakumar said, 'This is not a matter for or against Dharmasthala. All procedures must be carried out lawfully. I have observed Dharmasthala very closely. I have faith and confidence in the devotion, reverence, and practices there. I believe that in the coming days, the investigation will reveal the conspiracy that took place. Regarding this matter, our Home Minister G. Parameshwara will present the facts before the state by responding in the Assembly.' Meanwhile, the Karnataka BJP unit launched the 'Dharmasthala Chalo' campaign on Saturday morning to counter the alleged conspiracy surrounding the mass grave case. The campaign was flagged off at the Nelamangala toll on the outskirts of Bengaluru. In a major development, on July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who is a lower caste Hindu, had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village. He appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement. The man gave his statement before Principal Civil Judge and First Class Judicial Magistrate. The development has sparked a major controversy. He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. Even as 17 burial sites were excavated, the authorities could not find any strong evidence. Retired Supreme Court judges and activists demanded a SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court or the High Court into the shocking case, allegedly involving many women, girls and destitute men. While the state government has followed the rule of law and allowed a probe into the alleged mass murders, the Opposition BJP has accused it of giving in to anti-Hindu forces and demanded an interim report from the Home Minister.

‘No faith in state police': body of nurse found dead at Singur nursing home taken to AIIMS Kalyani after family's protest
The body of a 24-year-old nurse found dead Thursday at a private nursing home in West Bengal's Singur was taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kalyani early Saturday morning for a post-mortem. This was after the family members objected to the autopsy being conducted at Medical College, Kolkata. According to AIIMS sources, the autopsy began at 10 am in the presence of a magistrate and the nurse's family members, and the entire process was being video-graphed. Speaking to the media, the nurse's father said, 'We do not have any faith in the state police or administration, which is why we want the autopsy to be conducted by a Central hospital. Also, we want a central agency to conduct the probe into my daughter's death.' The family of the deceased alleged that she was sexually assaulted and subsequently murdered after she uncovered irregularities in the nursing home's operations. However, the management denied all such allegations, stating that she died by suicide. The deceased, a resident of the Purba Medinipur district, had joined the nursing home just four days before her death. Her father filed a complaint at the local police station, accusing the hospital of murder. He demanded videography of the autopsy in the presence of a magistrate to ensure transparency. The police said the nurse's mobile phone had been examined. Sources indicated that messages recovered from WhatsApp revealed the victim had a heated argument with her boyfriend, who was refusing to marry her due to their age difference. The police have already taken the nursing home owner and her boyfriend into custody for questioning. A senior police officer said that during interrogation, the boyfriend confirmed that the nurse was depressed after she refused to marry her as she was older than him. The body was first taken to Walsh Hospital in Serampore for the post-mortem. However, the family felt that the hospital lacked proper facilities, and the police insisted on transferring the body to Kolkata. A protest broke out and demonstrators, including BJP supporters, clashed with police in an attempt to break into the hospital, citing inadequate facilities. The body was then brought to the Kolkata Medical College. Tensions rose when BJP and CPI(M) supporters arrived on the spot and alleged that the police were trying to hide something and forcing the family to conduct the autopsy in a state-run hospital. According to sources, the father refused to grant permission for the autopsy at the Medical College and agreed only when it was decided to be conducted at AIIMS, Kalyani. The nurse's death occurred one year after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and killed at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024. A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime.
