US private payrolls increase in July

Business Times30-07-2025
[WASHINGTON] US private payrolls increased more than expected in July, the ADP National Employment Report showed on Wednesday (Jul 30), though the labour market continues to slow.
Private payrolls rose by 104,000 jobs last month after a revised 23,000 decline in June. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast private employment increasing 75,000 following a previously reported drop of 33,000 in June.
The ADP report, jointly developed with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, was published ahead of the more comprehensive employment report for July due to be released on Friday by the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is no correlation between the ADP and BLS employment reports.
The labour market has lost steam amid an unsettled economic outlook stemming from import tariffs. A survey from the Conference Board on Tuesday showed the share of consumers viewing jobs as 'hard' to get jumped to the highest level in nearly 4-1/2 years in July. That is consistent with the high number of people collecting unemployment checks.
A Reuters survey of economists expects the BLS' employment report to show nonfarm payrolls increased by 110,000 jobs in July after rising by 147,000 in June. The unemployment rate is forecast to increase to 4.2 per cent from 4.1 per cent in June.
Economists expect the Federal Reserve will keep its benchmark interest rate in the 4.25 per cent-4.50 per cent range after the end of a two-day policy meeting later on Wednesday, resisting pressure from President Donald Trump to lower borrowing costs. The Fed cut rates three times in 2024, with the last move coming in December. REUTERS

Market for battery metal lithium erupts as CATL shuts one of world's biggest mines

A lithium mine in Yichun, China. The mine closure is seen as another crackdown on overcapacity across China's economy. Shanghai - Lithium prices and stocks spiked on Aug 11 after battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) halted operations at a major mine in China, spurring speculation that Beijing might move to suspend other projects as it tackles overcapacity across the economy. Tianqi Lithium jumped as much as 19 per cent in Hong Kong, while Ganfeng Lithium Group surged 21 per cent, and Australian miners rallied, after CATL confirmed it had shut the mine in Jiangxi province. Prices of the battery metal on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange surged by the daily 8 per cent limit. The fate of the CATL mine – the biggest in China's lithium hub of Yichun – had been under close scrutiny for weeks, amid speculation that authorities wouldn't extend its licence. The mine accounts for some 6 per cent of global output, according to Bank of America, while other mines in the region account for at least another 5 per cent. 'I think it will mean the lithium price in the near term has very big upside,' Matty Zhao, co-head of China equity research at the lender, said in a Bloomberg TV interview. Lithium producers have struggled with a global supply glut exacerbated by demand headwinds for electric vehicles, including President Donald Trump's rollback of incentives for the industry in the United States. In China, the so-called anti-involution campaign has fueled speculation about a possible crackdown on a sector that's clearly suffering from oversupply. CATL, the world's biggest battery producer, said the stoppage would have little impact on its overall operations, and its shares rose as much as 2.8 per cent in Hong Kong before paring about half of the gains. 'For CATL we do not expect any meaningful operational impact to battery production from the Jiangxi mine suspension,' said Eugene Hsiao, the head of China equity strategy at Macquarie Capital. 'The concern from the mine suspension is less on CATL and more on if the broader lithium supply chain can see tighter capacity, and if this will be coordinated via Chinese government actions.' The 'anti-involution' theme has gripped China's financial markets in recent months, with investors trying to pinpoint industries and companies that might benefit from Beijing-led efforts to tackle deflation and overcapacity. It's encompassed sectors from e-commerce to EVs and steelmaking. Like many Chinese battery companies, CATL has aggressively expanded investments in minerals from lithium to nickel and cobalt in order to lock in long-term supplies and lower costs. That vertical integration has in turn aided China's push to become the world's leading EV manufacturer. Traders and industry executives are now watching for other mining curbs around China's Yichun city, which has emerged as a battery-metals hub. A local government department has asked eight miners to submit reserves reports by the end of September, according to notes from brokers and analysts, following an audit that found non-compliance in the registration and approvals process. 'CATL's situation does not change the oversupply structure in the market,' said Zhang Weixin, an analyst at China Futures. 'However, if production disruption is expanded to other mines in Yichun after Sept. 30, the lithium price level could go even higher.' BLOOMBERG

Trump hopes China will quickly quadruple its US soybean orders

[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump said on Sunday (Aug 10) that he hoped China would quadruple its soybean orders from the US adding that it was also 'a way of substantially reducing' Beijing's trade deficit with Washington. 'China is worried about its shortage of soybeans. Our great farmers produce the most robust soybeans. I hope China will quickly quadruple its soybean orders. This is also a way of substantially reducing China's trade deficit with the USA. Rapid service will be provided. Thank you President XI,' Trump said on Truth Social. A tariff truce between Beijing and Washington is set to expire on August 12, but the Trump administration has hinted that the deadline may be extended. China, which takes more than 60 per cent of soybeans shipped worldwide, buys the oilseed mainly from Brazil and the United States. The most active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) was up 2.13 per cent at US$10.08 a bushel at 0446 GMT, having been little changed before Trump's post. China imported roughly 105 million metric tons of soybeans last year, just under a quarter coming from the US and the remainder from Brazil. Quadrupling shipments would require China to import the bulk of its soybeans from the US. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up 'It's highly unlikely that China would ever buy four times its usual volume of soybeans from the US,' Johnny Xiang, founder of Beijing-based AgRadar Consulting, said. It is unclear if securing China's agreement to buy more US soybeans is a condition for extending the trade truce. China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The country has steadily reduced its reliance on US soybeans in recent years, shifting more purchases to South America. Under the Phase One trade deal signed during Trump's first term, China agreed to boost purchases of US agricultural products, including soybeans. However, Beijing ultimately fell far short of meeting those targets. This year, amid Washington–Beijing trade tensions, it has yet to buy any fourth quarter US beans, fuelling concerns as the US harvest export season approaches. 'On Beijing's side, there have been quite a few signals that China is prepared to forego US soybeans altogether this year, including booking those test cargoes of soymeal from Argentina,' said Even Rogers Pay, an agricultural analyst at Trivium China. Reuters previously reported that Chinese feedmakers have purchased three Argentine soymeal cargoes as they aim to secure cheaper South American supplies amid concerns about a possible soybean supply disruption in the fourth quarter. US soybean industry has been seeking alternative buyers, but no other country matches China's scale. Last year, China imported 22.13 million tons of soybeans from the US, and 74.65 million tons from Brazil. REUTERS
