BJP also questions AAP's anti-drug drive
Ludhiana: BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh joined party candidate Jiwan Gupta's campaign for the west bypoll on Sunday, criticising the ruling Aam Aadmi Party's governance in Punjab.
Chugh questioned the efficacy of AAP's "Yudh Nasheyan Virudh" drive against drugs, noting that drug problems persist in the state. He expressed confidence in BJP's victory, dismissing other candidates as proxies and stating the real contest would be between BJP and AAP.
Chugh emphatically criticised the education system of the state, saying that classrooms lacked basic facilities like blackboards and teachers under the "Shiksha Kranti" initiative.
He predicted BJP would form the government in Punjab in 2027, with the upcoming bypoll results indicating public sentiment.
Regarding development works, Chugh attributed progress of the city and state to funding by the Centre, claiming AAP's contribution was minimal. He also alleged that AAP's candidate, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, was contesting reluctantly under party pressure.
Nomination Filing
BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta will file his nomination papers on Monday, the last day for submissions. Supporters will gather at Ferozepur Road near Bharat Nagar Chowk before proceeding to the DC office. Punjab BJP leadership is expected to participate in the nomination process. Gupta's candidature was announced on Saturday.

'Action taken against those visibly responsible': Siddaramaiah defends government's response in Bengaluru stampede case

'The government acted only when pressure mounted. The real accused are Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. They should be investigated,' Vijayendra said. Following the tragedy, the government suspended multiple senior police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda. He was replaced by senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh, who officially took charge on Friday. The list of suspended officers includes Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, DCP (Central) Shekhar HT, ACP Balakrishna, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK. In parallel, Karnataka Police registered an FIR against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), event organisers DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), alleging 'irresponsibility' and 'carelessness' in crowd management. In response, the KSCA board, including President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A. Shankar, and Treasurer E.S. Jairam, filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash the FIRs. PM Modi inaugurates world's highest Chenab rail bridge in Reasi
Katra (J&K), June 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the world's highest Chenab rail bridge in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The PM was accompanied by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Before the inauguration, the PM inspected the bridge and spoke to the engineers and the labourers, who turned the dream into a reality. The Chenab rail bridge is the architectural marvel; it is located at a height of 359 meters above the river, and is the world's highest railway arch bridge. It is a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge is built to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Through the Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge, it will take just about 3 hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing existing travel time by 2-3 hours. The 272-km USBRL project is built at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore, and includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration. PM Modi flags off Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express
Katra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off a Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, the first train connection between the Kashmir valley and the Jammu region. Modi inaugurated the train in the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, among others. According to Northern Railway, the train has two travelling classes -- Chair Car (CC) and Executive Class (EC) -- with tickets costing Rs 715 and Rs 1,320, respectively.
