ALTBalaji, now known as ALTT, has frequently drawn legal scrutiny and public outrage for its provocative content. Ekta Kapoor's OTT platform has always been accused of pushing boundaries in its adult-themed web series. Below are five significant controversies that have made headlines in recent years.
In 2015, Ekta Kapoor reportedly added a 'nudity clause' in contracts for actors in ALTBalaji's OTT releases. It stopped actors from refusing bold scenes or dialogues.
Many criticised it as unfair, especially for newcomers. Even after concerns from the film board scared off some makers, Ekta continued her erotic show XXX and allegedly kept using the clause.
XXX: Uncensored Season 2 landed in trouble for showing Indian Army men and their families in bold and disrespectful ways. Many felt it insulted soldiers, misused army dress and hurt army families. Protests and legal complaints followed. Some scenes were later removed.
In February 2025, a Mumbai court told police to file a report. YouTuber Vikas Pathak, more popularly known as Hindustani Bhau, filed the case. He named Ekta Kapoor, her parents Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor and ALTBalaji as accused. His lawyer said a scene showed an army officer in an inappropriate act.
Many people and groups have raised complaints against ALTBalaji's web series. They believe the shows include excessive nudity and vulgar content. They allege such shows spoil morals and affect young viewers, especially children.
In 2020, a group from Chandigarh called Public Jagriti Mission took legal action. It filed a case against Ekta Kapoor, Balaji Telefilms and ALTBalaji, demanding the court to stop ban making or showing such shows.
In April 2021, National Award-winning filmmaker Sudhanshu Saria accused ALTBalaji of copying the poster of his 2015 film Loev for their show His Storyy. He also said the title matched a Korean series.
ALTBalaji later apologised, but Saria felt the apology was not honest. Later, social media users pointed out more ALTBalaji posters that looked similar to global shows.
Ekta Kapoor and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, faced legal trouble under the POCSO Act. According to the complaint, filed by a Mumbai school teacher, Gandii Baat Season 6 had objectionable scenes with minor girls. The episode was later removed.
In October 2024, Mumbai Police questioned both and called them again for more answers. Police asked for the actors' details while Ekta and Shobha were told to bring documents related to ALTBalaji. The company denied using minors. The investigation remains ongoing.

Madhuri ambassador of Odisha's handloom industry
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday appointed Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit as brand ambassador of the State's handloom industry. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement at the inauguration of Exhibition-cum-Knowledge Sharing for Textile Advantage or 'EKTA', an initiative to promote handloom products, marking the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations in the State. Speaking at the event, Dixit expressed admiration for Odisha's rich textile heritage and emphasised the importance of preserving traditional crafts through modern platforms like 'EKTA'. 'When I first draped a Bomkai saree, or ran my fingers across finely woven Sambalpuri 'ekat', I just did not feel the fabric, I felt the soul of the weaver, the rhythm of looms and legacy of generations speaking through silent patterns,' she said. 'These are not just textiles or handicrafts, they are living testaments to Odia resilience, creativity and timeless bond between the art and the identity. In every motif, there is a story, in every art, there is a prayer and every artist's eyes are a dream, to be seen, valued and passed on,' the Bollywood actor said. The 'EKTA' initiative aims to provide market access, training and financial support to handloom artisans across the State, officials said. The Chief Minister expressed hope that with the active support of Dixit, garments made from Odisha handloom will gain recognition in the fashion world of the country and abroad. Odisha's handicraft sector is not only an economic pillar but also a symbol of national pride and dignity, the Chief Minister said. He said Odisha's weaving tradition, from ancient maritime trade to modern global fashion stage, continues to reflect excellence, spirituality and culture. Majhi said the State government aims to uplift the socio-economic condition of weavers through the Handloom Development Scheme. Highlighting the scale of industry, Majhi said over 1.3 lakh weavers and support workers are directly engaged in the handloom sector across Odisha's 30 districts. He praised their commitment to preserving Odisha's weaving heritage through Primary Weavers' Cooperative Societies, Self-Help Groups and Producer Groups. Delhi HC clears ‘Udaipur Files' for release today
The Delhi high court on Thursday refused to stay the release of the movie 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder', saying that the petitioner has failed to establish how irreparable loss would be caused to him if release is not stayed. The movie, produced by Amit Jani, is scheduled to hit the theatres on Friday. It was initially slated to be released on July 11, but was temporarily stayed by the Delhi high court on July 10. On July 21, the Centre cleared it for release, subject to the filmmaker carrying out six additional edits. However, on August 1,the Centre withdrew its order and passed a fresh order on August 6, upholding the movie's certification. On Thursday, the bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Tushar Rao Gedela was hearing the petition filed by Mohd Javed –– an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case –– who sought a stay on the release of the movie during the pendency of his writ challenging the Centre's August 6 order. Rejecting the plea, the court said the petitioner had failed to establish a prima facie case and the movie's screening would not prejudice his right to fair trial since the same would be conducted by the judge uninfluenced by what is being depicted in the movie. 'This court is of the view that the petitioner has not been able to establish a prima facie case in his favour and also that the exhibition of the film is not likely to cause any harm to the right of fair trial of the petitioner to seek fair trial in as much as the trial would be conducted by the learned judge uninfluenced by what is being depicted in the film on account of restraining the judge,' the bench said. Taking note of the amount invested by movie's producer Amit Jani, the court said: 'The producer has already invested a huge amount in producing the film as submitted by the counsel for the producer and he has spent his lifetime earnings in producing the film. Thus in case the exhibition of the film is stayed, at this juncture the balance of convenience will be disturbed which in our opinion lies in favour of the producer. We also opine that the petitioner has failed to establish that any irreparable loss will be caused to the petitioner if the movie is released. In view of the discussions made, we find ourselves unable to agree with the prayer made for grant of interim relief. The prayer made for staying the release of the film is hereby rejected.' A detailed copy of the verdict is yet to be released. The court, however, issued notice in Javed's plea against Centre's August 6 decision of clearing the movie for release and fixed October 16 as the next date of hearing. Javed, represented by senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy and advocate Saumya Dwivedi, had asserted that the release of the movie would prejudice his right to fair trial, since the same was at a nascent stage and had the likelihood of prejudicing the witnesses. 'This film says that I am a conspirator of murder. The dialogue setting is from the chargesheet. My role as ascribed in the chargesheet has been lifted and used in the film,' Guruswamy said, asserting that the court had only examined six witnesses and was yet to examine 160 more witnesses and the movie contained dialogues from the chargesheet. The movie, Guruswamy said, had an enormous amount of hate speech and the petition was dismissed mechanically without due application of mind and was devoid of a reasoned analysis for its rejection. The Centre, represented by additional solicitor general Chetan Sharma along with standing counsel Amit Tiwari had asserted that the order was issued after careful consideration and due application of mind by senior officials. The producer Amit Jani's counsel Gaurav Bhatia asserted that the movie had been re-certified pursuant to 61 cuts and an edited disclaimer and was produced pursuant to taking NOC from the victim's family and was based on the incident. He further submitted that Jani's intention was to not vilify any community and its message was 'positive.' A National Investigation Agency and the accused was charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The trial is pending before a special NIA court in Jaipur.
