PPP project under consideration to develop KSRTC's Thamarassery depot

The Hindu18-05-2025

A public private partnership (PPP) project is under consideration for the development of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) Thamarassery depot in Kozhikode district as part of improving the rural and inter-district services. Preparation of the masterplan will begin soon, which will also address the immediate renovation requirements.
Action comes in the wake of a discussion initiated recently by M.K. Muneer, MLA, and local administrators with Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar. A team of experts comprising architects, people's representatives, and officials representing the Public Works department has already visited the proposed spot to understand the requirements and plans suitable for speedy execution.
To improve revenue
KSRTC officials said the depot, located in a one-acre spread compound, can be developed with superior facilities for the passengers and the bus crew to improve the corporation's revenue from the rural area. They also said that the depot is now managing over 30 successful services with limited staff amid all development crises, including very old buildings and pending renovation works.
Thamarassery grama panchayat authorities said that the Thamarassery depot stands second in generating better income from rural bus services in the district. According to them, there were initially over 40 services which were cut short citing shortage of conductors and drivers. The depot is now functioning in a 45-year old building, they added.
'Our proposal is to approve a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) project in PPP model, which can be implemented within a year if the State government and the KSRTC are extending full cooperation. A two-storey building with underground workshop for maintenance works is what we seek with the finalisation of the masterplan,' said Thamarassery grama panchayat president A. Aravindan. He also hopes that corporate social responsibility funds from some organisations will further support the project.
Services reinstated
Following the local administrators' request, some of the previously suspended long distance services to Thiruvananthapuram and Guruvayur had been reinstated at the depot. The KSRTC officials said the shortage of about 25 drivers also should be addressed to resume some of the previously stopped rural services at the earliest.

Technopark employees urge KSRTC to resume weekend long-distance bus services

Thiruvananthapuram: With increasing weekend travel difficulties, those working at Technopark have demanded the resumption of weekend long-distance KSRTC bus services from the campus. These services were halted during the pandemic and never reinstated. The techies are set to meet KSRTC MD on June 7 to address the issue. Before the pandemic, KSRTC operated multiple weekend buses connecting Technopark to major parts of the state. However, after the shift to remote work during the lockdown, the services were discontinued and have not resumed even after most companies returned to hybrid or full office work modes. "Employees are now back in the office, but KSRTC has not resumed the weekend services," said Rajeev Krishnan, convenor of Prathidwani, the socio-cultural and welfare organisation of IT employees in Technopark. "This has forced many to rely on trains, where getting a confirmed ticket over the weekend is a constant struggle. Restoring KSRTC services will ease this burden and encourage safer, more reliable travel options," he added. In response to growing concerns, a delegation from Prathidwani met transport minister K B Ganesh Kumar in Feb this year to raise the issue. The minister assured the delegation that the matter would be examined. However, services were not reinstated. A Thrissur-bound service was started but was also halted, citing an insufficient number of passengers. "Long queues at railway stations, last-minute cancellations and overcrowded compartments have made travel unpredictable and stressful," said Jayakrishna R, joint executive committee member of KSRTC Forum in Prathidwani. Sources within KSRTC acknowledged the growing demand and admitted that resuming these services was under consideration. "We will look into the issue and will come up with a solution soon. The outcome of the meeting with the KSRTC MD will be critical in determining whether the long-pending service gets the green light for reintroduction," said a senior KSRTC official. KSRTC, BMTC withhold Rs 3,110 crore in PF dues

Bengaluru: Karnataka's four major state-run transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC — have come under fire for failing to remit a staggering Rs 3,110 crore in provident fund (PF) contributions to the PF trust, despite regularly deducting the amount from employee salaries. Over the past year, these corporations have reportedly not deposited the deducted PF amounts, leaving thousands of transport workers in a state of financial uncertainty. Employees who have applied to withdraw PF for emergencies say they are unable to access their own money. Transport union leader Jagadish has alleged misuse of the employees' PF funds by the corporations. According to available data, KSRTC alone owes Rs 891 crore, BMTC Rs 958 crore, NWKRTC Rs 1,184 crore, and KKRTC Rs 76 crore — a total outstanding of Rs 3,110 crore. The delay in payment has also attracted interest penalties, with the PF trust now imposing up to 37 per cent in interest on the pending amount. Angered by the situation, employees are demanding immediate payment from the managing directors of all four corporations. The mounting dues and accruing interest are causing concern not only among employees but also within the state's financial ecosystem. In response to the crisis, the Karnataka government has approved a financial assistance package of Rs 2,000 crore to help address the PF shortfall. Transport Department Secretary Dr N.V. Prasad said that the Corporations will borrow funds to clear the dues, and the government will reimburse them in a phased manner. Prasad assured that the settlement to the PF trust will be done in stages, aiming to restore financial order and employee trust. The issue has sparked widespread unrest among transport workers, many of whom depend on their PF savings during emergencies, especially in the wake of recent inflation and cost-of-living increases.
