PPP project under consideration to develop KSRTC's Thamarassery depot

The Hindu18-05-2025
A public private partnership (PPP) project is under consideration for the development of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) Thamarassery depot in Kozhikode district as part of improving the rural and inter-district services. Preparation of the masterplan will begin soon, which will also address the immediate renovation requirements.
Action comes in the wake of a discussion initiated recently by M.K. Muneer, MLA, and local administrators with Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar. A team of experts comprising architects, people's representatives, and officials representing the Public Works department has already visited the proposed spot to understand the requirements and plans suitable for speedy execution.
To improve revenue
KSRTC officials said the depot, located in a one-acre spread compound, can be developed with superior facilities for the passengers and the bus crew to improve the corporation's revenue from the rural area. They also said that the depot is now managing over 30 successful services with limited staff amid all development crises, including very old buildings and pending renovation works.
Thamarassery grama panchayat authorities said that the Thamarassery depot stands second in generating better income from rural bus services in the district. According to them, there were initially over 40 services which were cut short citing shortage of conductors and drivers. The depot is now functioning in a 45-year old building, they added.
'Our proposal is to approve a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) project in PPP model, which can be implemented within a year if the State government and the KSRTC are extending full cooperation. A two-storey building with underground workshop for maintenance works is what we seek with the finalisation of the masterplan,' said Thamarassery grama panchayat president A. Aravindan. He also hopes that corporate social responsibility funds from some organisations will further support the project.
Services reinstated
Following the local administrators' request, some of the previously suspended long distance services to Thiruvananthapuram and Guruvayur had been reinstated at the depot. The KSRTC officials said the shortage of about 25 drivers also should be addressed to resume some of the previously stopped rural services at the earliest.

Land identified for depot of KSRTC e-buses at Balepuni

Mangaluru: KSRTC officials said that the corporation identified land at Balepuni, near Mudipu, to set up a depot for 100 electric buses sanctioned to Mangaluru under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. At the Transport Adalat held at the RTO office on Monday, an official from the KSRTC Mangaluru division mentioned that a final decision has not yet been taken. The KSRTC Mangaluru division has three depots in Mangaluru city, with a depot at Kuntikana housing 135 buses. The existing facilities will not be sufficient to accommodate an additional 100 electric buses, which will arrive soon. Land has been identified for a dedicated e-bus depot, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the govt for approval. The work will begin once the process is completed, the official said. Participants at the Adalat raised several grievances about public transportation. Mohammed Ismail, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim League, said that passengers of city buses from Deralakatte are made to get down at Pumpwell Junction despite availing tickets to the State Bank bus stand. Conductors force commuters to travel in another bus and cut short the trip. This causes a lot of inconvenience for commuters, especially senior citizens, he said. In response to a complaint raised by activist Hanumanth Kamath on the lack of bus connectivity to the Praja Soudha, new DC Office in Padil, RTO Shridhar K Mallad said that an appropriate decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be held on Aug 18. There are plans to extend bus services to Padil from various destinations. New permits will also be issued to KSRTC and private bus operators to introduce buses to Padil from various destinations, he said. Issue tickets or face music, says RTO. The RTO directed private bus conductors to issue tickets to all passengers. After the issue was brought to notice at the meeting, the RTO said that he had already started a drive-by travelling in private buses and imposing penalties. "At least twice a week, I travel in a private bus to check whether conductors issue tickets to passengers. Penalties have been imposed on many conductors who failed to issue tickets," he said, adding that the drive will continue. Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Association president Dinesh Kumpala M said that though six bus permits were issued on the Mangaluru - Kumpala route, only two buses are operating on the route. Meanwhile, one KSRTC bus on the route is also not operating regularly, he said. When participants at the meeting also raised similar complaints, the RTO said that the permits will be cancelled if private bus operators fail to operate buses on prescribed routes. Transport dept proposes e-bus charging depot in Mysuru division

The transport department submitted a proposal to the Union govt, for the establishment of an e-bus charging depot at KSRTC Mysuru division to support its electric bus fleet. This dedicated charging infrastructure depot is proposed to be built on 4.5 acres of land at Banni Mantap, where KSRTC is constructing a new suburban bus stand using the land available at the sprawling bus depot. The facility is exclusively to support electric buses operating from Mysuru. It will have features like a charging station, e-bus parking lot, restrooms, and several other facilities. About 100 e-buses can park at a time once this facility is set up in Mysuru. Mysuru KSRTC division has bus depots in different areas of the city such as Vijayanagar, Sathagalli, Kuvempu Nagar, and Banni Mantap for its diesel-operated buses, but the proposed depot is dedicated to e-buses. The department sent this proposal to the Union govt as Bengaluru received 2,000 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri e-drive initiative aimed at pushing sustainable and eco-friendly transport system. Another 2,500 e-buses are expected to join Bengaluru by the end of 2026. Mysuru KSRTC division also received e-buses under the scheme. Speaking to TOI, KSRTC Mysuru divisional manager HT Veeresh said that the department already sent this proposal for the establishment of e-bus depot in Mysuru, after identifying 4.5 acres of land available at Banni Mantap. The PM e-drive scheme initiated by the Union govt at a cost of ₹10,500 cr plans to roll out 14,028 e-buses across nine Indian cities, including Bengaluru, between 2024-26. The scheme also aims to build a network of 72,000 charging points in cities, including Mysuru, along highways to accelerate EV adoption. As the Union govt was also rolling out essential infrastructure such as charging hubs, depots, and related civil facilities to support the incoming fleet, an e-bus depot is also coming up in Mysuru, he said. This e-bus depot is a must for the charging hubs with huge electric plugs exclusively charging electric buses, which are fitted with 145-kilowatt electric motor capacity. This proposal also includes the establishment of charging stations in the city bus stand and KSRTC suburban bus stand, he said.
