Land identified for depot of KSRTC e-buses at Balepuni

Time of India6 days ago
Mangaluru: KSRTC officials said that the corporation identified land at Balepuni, near Mudipu, to set up a depot for 100 electric buses sanctioned to Mangaluru under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme.
At the Transport Adalat held at the RTO office on Monday, an official from the KSRTC Mangaluru division mentioned that a final decision has not yet been taken.
The KSRTC Mangaluru division has three depots in Mangaluru city, with a depot at Kuntikana housing 135 buses. The existing facilities will not be sufficient to accommodate an additional 100 electric buses, which will arrive soon. Land has been identified for a dedicated e-bus depot, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the govt for approval.
The work will begin once the process is completed, the official said.
Participants at the Adalat raised several grievances about public transportation. Mohammed Ismail, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim League, said that passengers of city buses from Deralakatte are made to get down at Pumpwell Junction despite availing tickets to the State Bank bus stand. Conductors force commuters to travel in another bus and cut short the trip.
This causes a lot of inconvenience for commuters, especially senior citizens, he said.
In response to a complaint raised by activist Hanumanth Kamath on the lack of bus connectivity to the Praja Soudha, new DC Office in Padil, RTO Shridhar K Mallad said that an appropriate decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be held on Aug 18. There are plans to extend bus services to Padil from various destinations. New permits will also be issued to KSRTC and private bus operators to introduce buses to Padil from various destinations, he said.
Issue tickets or face music, says RTO.
The RTO directed private bus conductors to issue tickets to all passengers. After the issue was brought to notice at the meeting, the RTO said that he had already started a drive-by travelling in private buses and imposing penalties. "At least twice a week, I travel in a private bus to check whether conductors issue tickets to passengers. Penalties have been imposed on many conductors who failed to issue tickets," he said, adding that the drive will continue.
Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Association president Dinesh Kumpala M said that though six bus permits were issued on the Mangaluru - Kumpala route, only two buses are operating on the route. Meanwhile, one KSRTC bus on the route is also not operating regularly, he said. When participants at the meeting also raised similar complaints, the RTO said that the permits will be cancelled if private bus operators fail to operate buses on prescribed routes.

Prayagraj plans dedicated e-rickshaw routes to ease traffic chaos

In an effort to decongest city roads and reduce persistent traffic snarls, especially during peak hours, the traffic department—along with officials from the district administration and the regional transport office (RTO)—is set to introduce designated routes for e-rickshaws within city limits. E-rickshaws on city roads remain a major cause of traffic bottlenecks (Anil Kumar Maurya/HT) Traffic authorities have identified the uncontrolled surge in the number of e-rickshaws as a key contributor to bottlenecks across major city intersections. Compounding the problem is the lack of designated parking spaces, operating zones, or integration of e-rickshaws into the city's formal traffic management system. According to traffic inspector Amit Kumar, unregulated parking and haphazard movement of e-rickshaws are severely disrupting the smooth flow of traffic. 'Every major city crossing, which already witnesses heavy vehicular movement, is cluttered with stationary e-rickshaws waiting for passengers along the roadside. This leads to significant traffic congestion. Unlike earlier, e-rickshaws are now covered under the Motor Vehicles Act. On average, 2,000 challans are issued each month—for wrong parking, signal jumping, road accidents, or rash driving, often involving underage drivers,' he said. Following a directive from district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, a committee will be formed to examine traffic congestion caused by the rising number of e-rickshaws. The committee will also finalise 8 to 10 dedicated routes for their movement across the city. Additional regional transport officer (administration), Rajeev Chaturvedi, confirmed the rapid growth of e-rickshaws on city roads. 'An estimated 30,000 e-rickshaws are currently operating in the city. Their number is steadily increasing, as they offer a relatively easy source of income,' he said. Currently, there are no designated parking slots for these electric vehicles. The business behind the boom The rising number of e-rickshaws is largely driven by unemployment and the promise of steady income, with minimal regulatory oversight. According to Augustya Shukla, owner of Mahi Enterprises—who has been selling e-rickshaws in Prayagraj for nine years—graduates, students preparing for competitive exams, and the unemployed are increasingly turning to e-rickshaw driving as a livelihood. 'E-rickshaws are available in lead-acid and lithium battery variants, costing between ₹1.40 lakh to ₹1.70 lakh. Private financiers offer loans with down payments as low as ₹20,000–25,000. Drivers earn around ₹800–1,000 per day, translating to monthly earnings of ₹24,000–30,000. After paying EMIs of ₹7,500–8,500 for 24 months, drivers still manage to save around ₹20,000 a month—enough to cover basic expenses,' he explained. Shukla added that the e-rickshaw trade has also become a profitable enterprise for mass operators. 'Some private operators own up to 60–70 e-rickshaws, renting them out at ₹300 per day. A driver making ₹800–1,000 per day pays the rent and still takes home ₹500–700. It's a win-win business model,' he said. The rise of illegal charging hubs The sharp increase in e-rickshaw numbers is also fueled by their low operating costs. However, many are reportedly running on electricity pilfered from the grid. Illegal charging hubs have mushroomed across areas like Katra, Teliyarganj, and other localities, charging ₹50 per vehicle for a five-hour overnight recharge using stolen power.

Chennithala seeks Vigilance probe into alleged corruption in PM-KUSUM implementation

Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, MLA, has sought a Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) probe into the alleged corruption in the implementation of the Pradhana Manthri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM) scheme in Kerala by the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert). In his complaint to Manoj Abraham, Director, VACB, on Saturday, Mr. Chennithala urged the VACB to register a case and initiate a detailed investigation into the tendering process and other aspects of the implementation of the Centrally supported scheme. Mr. Chennithala reiterated his charge that top Anert officials were involved in the manipulations in the selection of bidders for the PM-KUSUM scheme and the award of contract work's rate 'with a view to obtain undue pecuniary gains to the bidders as a whole and thereby caused wrongful loss to government.' Foul play alleged With respect to the tendering process, he alleged foul play in the elimination of the lowest bidder from the field of choice. Mr. Chennithala pointed out that only a proper investigation can bring out the total monetary loss sustained by the government on account of the irregularities. A fair investigation is also needed to ascertain how the Union government guidelines pertaining to the implementation of the project were breached, Mr. Chennithala said. In connection with the PM-KUSUM scheme, Mr. Chennithala had levelled serious charges against Anert and its CEO Narendranath Veluri through the statements in the media. On its part, Anert had published an official refutation of Mr. Chennithala's claims on its website. Among its aims, PM-KUSUM envisions solarisation of individual grid-connected agricultural pumps. Anert had been picked as the agency for its implementation in Kerala.

State-of-the-art fisheries processing cluster coming up in Karaikal

Karaikal, an enclave of the Union Territory of Puducherry, will soon have its first-of-its kind state-of-the-art fisheries processing cluster. It is one of the 34 fisheries production and processing clusters approved across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Official sources said the Union government had sanctioned the cluster for Karaikal and a tender would soon be floated. The total project cost is ₹348.89 crore, including ₹298.34 crore in Central grant. The Union government has notified the Thengaithittu fishing harbour in Puducherry as a partnering harbour for the Karaikal fishing harbour. The decision is aimed at augmenting the socio-economic development of the fisher community in the Union Territory. By having two major fishing harbours in the proposed cluster, Puducherry's entire fisheries economy is expected to gain immense benefits, an official said. The cluster-based approach will increase the competitiveness of fisheries, facilitate economies of scale, generate higher incomes, and accelerate the growth and expansion of fisheries and aquaculture in an organised manner. According to D. Manikandan, Secretary, Fisheries, 'The initiative is aimed at transforming the selected regions into integrated fisheries clusters with strong backward and forward linkages. The inclusion of Puducherry's fishing harbour in this initiative will lead to modernisation of fisheries infrastructure, development of value-added facilities, and greater market access for marine and inland fish products from the Union Territory.' He added, 'The initiative is expected to bring wide-ranging benefits to Puducherry's fisherfolk, including enhanced income opportunities through better handling, processing, and marketing systems. With the establishment of integrated value chain infrastructure, such as cold chains, ice plants, processing units, and transport logistics, the fishers of Puducherry will gain access to larger markets... In addition, the cluster will help in employment generation, skill development, and entrepreneurship among coastal communities, especially youth and women.' The development of the cluster will be further reinforced by the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samrudhi-Sah Yojana (PM-MKSSY) in the Union Territory. Under this scheme, 15 Primary Fisheries Cooperative Societies (PFCS) in Puducherry will be supported by the Pondicherry State Fishermen Cooperative Federation Limited (PSFCFL) with mentorship, financial assistance of ₹2 lakh per PFCS, and support for business-planning and capacity-building. The convergence of both initiatives is poised to make Puducherry a model for sustainable co-operative-led fisheries development. According to an official, the National Fisheries Development Board will be the nodal agency for overall coordination and implementation.
