Mangaladevi Bus Terminal finally ready for use
Mangaluru: The Mangaladevi Bus Terminal, which was inaugurated twice by BJP and Congress representatives in Feb and remained idle for nearly six months, will soon be made operational. No buses to Mangaladevi were operating from the new bus terminal ever since it was inaugurated twice in Feb. After holding discussions with bus operators and other stakeholders, Mangaluru RTO Shridhar K Mallad decided that all buses to Mangaladevi should operate from the new bus terminal. He said the decision will be finalised at a meeting of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to be chaired by deputy commissioner Darshan HV on Aug 18. He said that buses on the route will start entering the bus bay developed by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) once the RTA finalises the proposal. At a Transport Adalat organised by the RTO recently, the issue of the unused bus terminal at Mangaladevi was raised by the public. In fact, various projects, costing a total of Rs 5.9 crore, including a PHC, a veterinary hospital, and a bus bay measuring 110m in length and 11m in width, with a 4m wide footpath, were constructed by the MSCL. A foundation stone laying ceremony for the bus terminal and other projects at Mangaladevi ward was held under the leadership of Premananda Shetty during his tenure as mayor in 2021. Shetty said he also held discussions with MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik and the RTO to put the bus terminal at Mangaladevi into use. It may be recalled that minister Rao inaugurated the projects, including a PHC, a veterinary hospital, a municipal staff complex, park, and the new bus terminal in Mangaladevi ward on Feb 15. Previously, the same facilities were inaugurated by the then mayor Manoj Kumar, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, on Feb 9. However, the bus terminal was not yet made operational. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Land identified for depot of KSRTC e-buses at Balepuni
Mangaluru: KSRTC officials said that the corporation identified land at Balepuni, near Mudipu, to set up a depot for 100 electric buses sanctioned to Mangaluru under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. At the Transport Adalat held at the RTO office on Monday, an official from the KSRTC Mangaluru division mentioned that a final decision has not yet been taken. The KSRTC Mangaluru division has three depots in Mangaluru city, with a depot at Kuntikana housing 135 buses. The existing facilities will not be sufficient to accommodate an additional 100 electric buses, which will arrive soon. Land has been identified for a dedicated e-bus depot, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the govt for approval. The work will begin once the process is completed, the official said. Participants at the Adalat raised several grievances about public transportation. Mohammed Ismail, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim League, said that passengers of city buses from Deralakatte are made to get down at Pumpwell Junction despite availing tickets to the State Bank bus stand. Conductors force commuters to travel in another bus and cut short the trip. This causes a lot of inconvenience for commuters, especially senior citizens, he said. In response to a complaint raised by activist Hanumanth Kamath on the lack of bus connectivity to the Praja Soudha, new DC Office in Padil, RTO Shridhar K Mallad said that an appropriate decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be held on Aug 18. There are plans to extend bus services to Padil from various destinations. New permits will also be issued to KSRTC and private bus operators to introduce buses to Padil from various destinations, he said. Issue tickets or face music, says RTO. The RTO directed private bus conductors to issue tickets to all passengers. After the issue was brought to notice at the meeting, the RTO said that he had already started a drive-by travelling in private buses and imposing penalties. "At least twice a week, I travel in a private bus to check whether conductors issue tickets to passengers. Penalties have been imposed on many conductors who failed to issue tickets," he said, adding that the drive will continue. Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Association president Dinesh Kumpala M said that though six bus permits were issued on the Mangaluru - Kumpala route, only two buses are operating on the route. Meanwhile, one KSRTC bus on the route is also not operating regularly, he said. When participants at the meeting also raised similar complaints, the RTO said that the permits will be cancelled if private bus operators fail to operate buses on prescribed routes. RTA meet on Aug 18 to decide on zones for e-autos
Mangaluru: After the Karnataka govt decided to issue permits for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) is set to lay conditions, including assigning rural or urban zones for the vehicles. The govt has withdrawn its relaxation from the permit rules for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws. Accordingly, permits will be issued to all such autorickshaws without collecting any fee. Earlier, electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws were exempt from the permit rules and were allowed to operate across the district. With the permit rule back, the RTA is also considering zoning regulations for rural and urban autorickshaws. RTO Sridhar K Mallad said that a meeting of the RTA scheduled for Aug 18 will discuss the issue. "A final decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be chaired by the deputy commissioner. The conditions to be laid to issue permits for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws will also be taken during the meeting. We are planning to implement the zones for autorickshaws, which existed earlier, and this will also be discussed in the meeting," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo A Transport Adalat will be held on Aug 11, where major issues pertaining to the department will be discussed, and the agenda will be placed before the RTA meeting on Aug 18. There are more than 2,700 e-autorickshaws in the district, he added. It may be recalled that various unions of autorickshaw drivers and people's representatives opposed the permit relaxation allowed only for electric, methanol, and ethanol-based autorickshaws. Following this, the state govt agreed to the demand of autorickshaw drivers to require e-autorickshaws to obtain permits, just like other autorickshaws. The state govt issued an order in July to revoke the central govt's directive and mandate that all vehicles using methanol and ethanol must obtain permits under the Motor Vehicles Act. The govt has also decided to grant these permits without any fees. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
