
Tech firms Meta and X at bottom of latest ‘reputation index', as RTÉ also scores poorly
The Ireland Reputation Index 2025, prepared and published by PR firm The Reputations Agency, is the largest and longest-running study of reputation in Ireland and is based on the perceptions of over 5,000 members of the public.
The study measures the level of trust, respect, admiration and esteem the public has for 100 of the largest, most familiar and most important organisations in Ireland.
This year's study took place between the January 3 and March 17.
Ireland's member-owned credit unions topped the ranking for the third consecutive year and along with An Post is one of just two entities to get an 'excellent' score of 82.4 on the index.
Credit unions are seen as positive in terms of citizenship, conduct and workplace and ranked first when the public was asked whether they would give them the benefit of the doubt in a crisis.
For the first time in 16 years, the pillar banks of AIB and Bank of Ireland both moved to an 'average' score on the index, an indication the scars of the last financial crisis are starting to fade. Mediahuis Ireland, which publishes this newspaper, also received an average score.
An Bord Pleanála was the most improved organisation this year, although it still came in with a 'weak' score overall.
CEO and founder of The Reputations Agency, Niamh Boyle, said the results show importance of investing in understanding, protecting and building reputation:
'We found that the public in Ireland is 15 times more willing to buy from an organisation in the 'excellent' reputation tier, than from an organisation whose reputation falls into the 'poor' reputation tier,' she said.
'We learned during Storm Éowyn that reputation is resilient and protects against headwinds. Organisations in the eye of the storm such as ESB, An Post and Vodafone, improved their reputation scores through the efforts they made to protect customers and communities and to communicate with the public.'
One striking trend in the overall results is the advantage to businesses of being perceived as Irish.
Six of the top 10 ranked organisations this year are Irish, including the credit unions, An Post, Bord Bia, Dunnes Stores, Bon Secours Health System and St Vincent's Private Hospital
The other four are Boots, Lidl, and Toyota, which are very well established here, and Aer Lingus which benefits from its heritage as Ireland's national airline even though it is owned by Anglo-Spanish aviation giant IAG. Aer Lingus's top-10 ranking came despite significant disruption to its services last summer during its pilot strike.

How Riley is changing period care in Ireland and beyond
WHEN Fiona Parfrey speaks about period care, she doesn't mince words. 'We want period products to be treated just like toilet paper; something that's readily available in every bathroom you walk into,' she says. Parfrey is the co-founder of Riley, a rapidly growing Irish startup that's shaking up the period care industry—not just with sustainable products, but with a bold mission to break the silence and shame around menstruation. 'We're aiming to remind people it's a normal bodily function,' she says. 'There's nothing to be ashamed about.' Born and raised in Cork, Parfrey studied marketing at University College Cork. 'I'm a very proud Corkonian,' she laughs. 'I studied marketing and worked in agencies across Dublin and Australia, and then I moved into the startup world in Australia. That's where I kind of fell in love with entrepreneurship.' That love turned into a career. After leaving her job in Australia, Parfrey went backpacking around the world, which sparked her first business idea. 'I realised there was a gap in the market for a travelling backpack that was ergonomically designed to fit the female body,' she says. 'A lot of the backpacks on the market were bulky and hard to carry for women. So I created a backpack that was made using recycled plastic.' The brand, Sundrift, gained traction until the COVID pandemic disrupted the travel industry and forced Parfrey to shift gears. That pivot led to Riley. The idea for Riley wasn't born in a boardroom or a brainstorm session. It happened over wine with a friend. 'The conversation happened quite naturally one evening,' Parfrey says. 'We were talking about how frustrated we were with the period products we had been using our entire lives.' That frustration turned into a revelation. 'We discovered that many mainstream period products are manufactured with up to 24 hormone-disrupting chemicals and covered in plastic,' she says. 'There were so many unnecessary ingredients in the manufacturing process. We felt like surely there's a better way of doing this.' When they couldn't find a cleaner, more sustainable alternative on the Irish market, Parfrey and her co-founders decided to build one themselves. Riley launched in 2021 as an e-commerce subscription service delivering organic, plastic-free period products directly to consumers' doors. 'We knew that when we started to build something clean, it would not only be better for our bodies but better for the planet as well,' Parfrey says. Sustainability isn't a marketing buzzword for Riley; it's a core principle of the business. 'Our applicators on our tampons are made from a bio-based solution, derived from sugarcane,' Parfrey notes. 'And we try to keep the environment in mind in every element of our supply chain.' But it hasn't been easy. 'It's a real journey to make things as sustainable as possible as we grow the business." Riley has since expanded from its consumer-focused model into the corporate space. 'We've started a big corporate offering,' Parfrey says. 'We supply period products to companies so they can stock them in staff bathrooms, just like they stock toilet paper. It's about making period care accessible, visible, and normal.' Parfrey is encouraged by how Ireland has responded to the brand and its mission. 'It's been really refreshing how open people have been, across generations, across genders, to actually talking about this,' she says. 'We've been really pleasantly surprised by the support we've gotten from all types of people.' But she's quick to note that stigma still lingers. 'If you survey young girls in school, 50% of them still feel shame when they're talking about periods. That's a huge problem,' she says. 'We've made progress, but we still have a long way to go.' The issue, she believes, goes far beyond just product accessibility. It's cultural, educational, and deeply gendered. 'Women go through a lot in their lifetime; from periods to childbirth to menopause and everything in between,' Parfrey says. 'It's important not just that women understand what's going on in their bodies, but that men do too.' She's especially passionate about closing the knowledge and research gap in women's health. 'There's been more research and studies on male baldness than there has been on endometriosis. That's shocking.' Riley was launched in 2021 (Photo by Riley) Riley is a proudly Irish company, but built to scale. 'We're an Irish-registered company,' says Parfrey. 'I'm based in Cork; we have a small office here and another in Dublin. My co-founder, Áine, has moved over to London as we try to grow the business in the UK.' That international push is already bearing fruit. 'Our supply chain is set up to serve all of Europe, and we have clients and direct customers all throughout Europe,' Parfrey says. 'We absolutely have global ambitions. The beauty of this business is that periods transcend borders, cultures, and languages. It's such a common thing for women no matter where they come from.' Reflecting on her startup journey, Parfrey encourages others not to wait for perfection. 'Just launch a minimum viable product. Get something to market and learn from your early adopters. If we had waited to launch a perfect product, we still wouldn't be in the market today.' Listening to feedback, she says, has been critical. 'Be close to your customer. Take their feedback on board. We constantly try to improve and make changes as we grow.' 'The more we talk openly about periods, the more we understand each other,' she says. 'And the easier it will be for everyone.' Whether it's tackling sustainability or breaking stigma in boardrooms and classrooms, Riley is charting a new course, one that's not just better for the body, but better for the planet too. AIB has reported a big drop in profits
AIB's net profit fell 16% to €927 million in the first half of 2025, mainly due to lower interest rates from the European Central Bank. The main reason for the dip was a 10% drop in net interest income (NII), which fell to €1.87 billion and also because the margin AIB makes on its loans has lessened since the ECB reduced rates from 4% to 2% last year. Even though AIB's income was under strain, there was still a lot of demand for loans, new lending went up by €600 million to €6.9 billion, thanks to more mortgages, corporate loans and personal loans. According to CEO Colin Hunt, the bank is still doing well despite uncertainty across the world, and he also applauded the Irish economy for being strong enough to support lending activities. The bank's return on tangible equity was 21%, and it issued a €263 million interim dividend, its first such payment since the financial crisis. At the same time, operating costs went up by 3% to €979 million because of inflation and more money being spent on operations. A 2% drop in full-time employees to 10,375 people helped make up for some of this. Income from sources other than interest also went down, dropping 9% to €358 million. The bank made more money from fees and commissions, but this was mostly cancelled out by lower returns on equity investments. AIB set aside €85 million for loan losses, up from €61 million a year earlier, which shows that they are being careful about credit risk in the current situation. It plans to make more than €3.6 billion in net interest income in 2025. This comprises a €15 billion structural hedge program and €2.2 billion in new investment securities. The bank has also made its hybrid work rules stricter; eligible staff will have to go back to the office three days a week, which is the tightest policy of any of Ireland's main retail banks. At the end of 2024, AIB had more than 10,400 employees. In early 2022, they started hybrid working, which meant that employees had to be in the office at least two days a week, depending on their role. The Irish government sold its last 2% interest in AIB for €305 million, almost finishing its sale of assets after the financial crisis. This puts the total amount of money the State has recovered to €19.8 billion, which is only €700 million less than the original €20.8 billion bailout. Clogher Valley marks end of another NI show season
Clogher Valley Show has brought the curtain down on another summer calendar of farming events in Northern Ireland. And, by common consent, the show marked a fitting end to what is generally considered to have been one of the most successful agricultural show seasons in many years. Northern Ireland Shows Association (NISA) chairperson, Brian Lockhart told Agriland: 'The crowds came out, the weather held up, competing livestock numbers just keep on increasing, and the messaging around the significance of our farming and food sectors continues to be communicated. 'And we have got to build on all of this for the future.' The NISA chairperson noted that Armagh Show was the only event that did not enjoy good weather in 2025, but added that "even here the turnout of the general public was tremendous". 'And all of this has been achieved on the back of the voluntary commitment made by so many people.. 'Adding to this has been the growing commitment of farming organisations and commercial business sponsors to the shows. 'A case in point was the tremendous support given by the Ulster Farmers' Union to all the NISA events held this summer. The organisation took a trade stand at each show venue.' Looking ahead, Lockhart is adamant the the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) must strategically support all the local agricultural shows taking place in Northern Ireland. He explained: 'Large numbers of volunteers worked diligently to organise the series of local farming shows held at venues across Northern Ireland throughout the summer months. 'But our costs keep rising. Insurance is one: compliance with health and safety legislation is another. And this is just the tip of the iceberg." According to the NISA chairperson, Northern Ireland is now the only region of the UK and Ireland where core government funding is not provided to support local agricultural shows. Lockhart said: 'The Irish government currently provides €1 million of core funding to local agricultural shows on an annual basis. "This is topped by additional money from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, which is specifically made available to provide prize funding for a wide range of competition classes.' He emphasised that Northern Ireland's local agricultural shows provide a tremendous shop window for the local farming and food industries. He said: 'These events attract many thousands of people - year-in, year-out. All of this activity is also adding to local economises in a more than meaningful way. 'Local show societies have histories that stretch back, in some cases, over 150 years. And they continue to play a key role at the very heart of the farming and food sectors. 'But none of this can be taken for granted into the future. Fermanagh Show did not take place last year, and this is because of the funding challenges facing the show society at that time.'
