MCBA foils attempt to smuggle exotic animals worth RM73,000
In a statement today, the agency said the local man was arrested in an operation involving its KLIA personnel and the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.
"Acting on intelligence received, two KLIA MCBA officers along with three AVSEC personnel conducted a further inspection of a passenger's luggage.
"The suspect was detained at 10pm after he was found attempting to smuggle several exotic animals on flight MH0198 to Hyderabad, India."
MCBA said an initial X-ray scan of the luggage revealed suspicious images resembling wildlife.
"Further inspection uncovered six wild animals - two silvery langurs (lotong kelabu), two siamangs, and two armadillos - all classified as endangered and protected species under both national and international laws."
The agency said the 38-year-old suspect, from Selangor, was detained to assist investigations under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008.
"All the seized animals have been handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action," it added.
The agency said the effort reflects MCBA's continued commitment to combating wildlife smuggling activities, which threaten the country's biodiversity and tarnish Malaysia's image on the international stage.

Klang Valley drug syndicate busted with RM4.66m syabu seized
KUALA LUMPUR: Police dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate in the Klang Valley after arresting three men and confiscating 145.68kg of syabu valued at RM4.66 million. The operation, conducted on July 24, led to the seizure of drugs hidden in a car and a rented house in Puncak Jalil. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said two Malaysians, aged 32 and 61, and a 34-year-old Indonesian were detained at a shopping centre in Jalan Kuchai Lama. A search of their vehicle uncovered 10.34kg of syabu concealed in a cloth bag inside the boot. Further raids at a double-storey house in Puncak Jalil yielded an additional 135.34kg of the drug packed in 122 plastic packets. 'The total seizure could supply around 728,400 addicts,' said Mohamed Usuf. Investigations revealed the syndicate had rented the Puncak Jalil property since October last year for RM2,000 monthly, using it as a storage hub before distributing drugs locally and to Indonesia. The group is believed to have been active since May, sourcing supplies from overseas. Two of the suspects tested positive for drugs, with one having a prior drug-related warrant. All three have been remanded until July 31 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - Bernama

Foamy effluent from glove factory sparks shutdown order
SUNGAI PETANI: A rubber glove factory here has been ordered to halt operations after it was found discharging foamy effluent into the public drainage system. Kedah Department of Environment (DoE) director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the enforcement action followed a public complaint received on July 27 regarding the incident. She added that an investigation team was immediately dispatched to the site on the same day, where it was confirmed that the factory had released foamy wastewater into the drains. "This not only pollutes the environment but also poses a threat to the water ecosystem and public health. "As an immediate measure, the Kedah DoE enforced an equipment seizure under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. "This action aims to immediately halt the polluting activity by the factory," she said in a statement today. Sharifah Zakiah said an investigation paper has also been opened under Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Amendment 2024). Under this provision, those found guilty may face a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine ranging from RM50,000 to RM10 million. "Such a severe penalty reflects the government's seriousness in addressing environmental pollution. "The Kedah DoE will not compromise on any form of environmental contamination. "We deeply appreciate public reports on this matter and pledge to continue monitoring the situation closely," she added. Sharifah Zakiah also urged the public to continue cooperating with the DoE in safeguarding the environment. She said those wishing to lodge a complaint may contact the toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-2727 or visit the e-complaint system at "Everyone's cooperation is vital to ensure the environment is preserved for future generations," she said.
