Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic, Paralympic medal designs revealed
One side of the medal design has the two halves coming together to create the Olympic rings or the Paralympic Agitos. The other side has the Milan Cortina Games logo on one half and the name of the event on the other half, including Braille for the Paralympic medals.
The medal designs are two halves to celebrate 'the power of differences ... to create a bold, unified statement.' Milan Cortina organizers described the medals as 'a gesture of perpetual motion and union":
'A dynamic graphic abstraction showing the union of two parts in constant motion, highlighted by the contrast between a granular texture and a mirrored surface. The design stays pure and simple — using only the essential lines to express the ideas of union and movement. The medal's energy comes from this division, representing ongoing change. These elements are brought together by the Olympic and Paralympic values, turning contrast into unity and motion into meaning.'
Milan Cortina 2026
The Milan Cortina Olympics, which open Feb. 6, will feature the most medal events in Winter Games history —116 of them spread across clusters in Northern Italy.
The first medals are scheduled to be awarded in Alpine skiing (men's downhill) and cross-country skiing (women's 20km skiathlon) on Feb. 7.
The Milan Cortina Paralympics, which open March 6, will have 79 medal events. The first medals are scheduled to be awarded in Para Alpine skiing and Para biathlon.

Injuries hit Team Clark, rookies prepare for the WNBA All-Star Game
Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark is out but most of the WNBA's best are in for the league's All-Star Game. The Indiana Fever's injured superstar won't be able to play Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse when the team she drafted, Team Clark, faces Team Collier, picked by opposing captain Napheesa Collier. The events started Friday night with 3-point contest, headlined by event record-holder Sabrina Ionescu, and skills challenge. Clark had also been scheduled to compete in the 3-point contest. Here are a few things to note heading into the busy weekend. Injuries bog down Team Clark Clark, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, will be sitting out after sustaining a groin injury in the Fever's game against the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday. As the player who received the most fan votes and the captain of Team Clark, Clark said she is 'looking forward to helping (coach Sandy Brondello) coach our team to a win' in Thursday's announcement of her withdrawal. 'I will give the coaching hat to her as much as she wants, to be quite honest,' Brondello said. 'You've seen it with the Fever, she's been very active on the sideline when she wasn't playing.' Phoenix's Satou Sabally, a fellow starter on Team Clark, will also be sidelined. She announced Wednesday that she will be sitting out this weekend with an injured ankle. A'ja Wilson, a third Team Clark starter, said Friday afternoon that it's still to be determined if she will play in Saturday's game, after sustaining a wrist injury against the New York Liberty last week. The absence of two members of Team Clark led the league to appoint two replacements for the All-Star Game, bringing Washington's Brittney Sykes and Atlanta's Brionna Jones onto the roster Thursday afternoon. The Fever's Lexie Hull will be replacing Clark in the 3-point contest. Rookies on the roster It's a young All-Star Game this year, with rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen making up the largest rookie contingent at the game since 2011. Citron and Iriafen are on Team Clark, and Bueckers is a starter for Team Collier. 'It's amazing,' Citron said. 'This rookie class is really talented, and I'm just happy that I'm one of the ones here. It's really cool.' Before the recent three-year string of rookie starters — Aliyah Boston in 2023, Clark in 2024 and now Bueckers — only seven rookies had ever been selected as All-Star starters in the game's 26-year history. A fun format This year's All-Star format is different from last year's, when the U.S. women's Olympic team played against Team WNBA. This time, each team is headed up by a captain (Clark and Collier) who drafted players from a pool of selected All-Stars. It's a return to a more traditional format after the 2024 Olympic year shook things up. 'It's a little more loose, has that fun element to it,' Team Collier coach Cheryl Reeve said of this year's game. Norwegian Olympic skier dies after lightning strike
Audun Groenvold, a Norwegian skier and Olympic medalist, died after he was struck by lightning, the Norwegian Ski Federation announced in a statement Wednesday. Groenvold, 49, was hit by an electric bolt during a recent trip to a cabin, according to the federation, which said that he was taken to a hospital for treatment but later died. 'Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the alpine and freestyle communities,' Tove Moe Dyrhaug, president of the federation, said in the statement. 'There will be a big void after Audun.' Groenvold, whom the federation called 'a pioneer in Norwegian freestyle and ski cross,' won a bronze medal in men's ski cross at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a member of the national Alpine ski team before moving into freestyle and ski cross, the federation said. The Associated Press reported that Groenvold 'had one podium finish as a World Cup Alpine skier, finishing third in a downhill in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999.' He also earned a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships and the overall ski cross cup in 2007, according to the AP. After his skiing career ended, Groenvold went on to become a national team coach and a television commentator, the federation said. According to the Norwegian Broadcasting Corp., Groenvold 'gave up being an active athlete' after the 2010 Olympics because 'his body had given him signals that enough was enough.' The broadcaster said that he had 'struggled with both his knee, elbow and neck towards the end of his career.' In a Facebook post, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, Groenvold's wife, grieved 'my great love and my best friend for twenty years,' according to NRK. 'What started with a lovely summer vacation,' she wrote, ended 'with you being struck by lightning while we were out at our cabin.' She added, 'The loss of you is enormous.' Suni Lee: Social media took OG Anunoby relationship too far
It's not uncommon for NBA players to have connections with fans and celebrities who come to attend their games. However, Suni Lee and OG Anunoby took on a different meaning of that this past season. The six-time Olympic medalist, a self-proclaimed fan of basketball, was seen sitting courtside often under the Madison Square Garden lights to watch the Knicks go on their run to the Eastern Conference Finals — their first in 25 years.
