
You can still outpace AI: Wharton professor reveals a ‘skill bundling' strategy to safeguard your future from automation
As artificial intelligence reshapes the modern workplace with stunning speed, one Wharton professor has a sobering message for today's professionals: the safest jobs of tomorrow aren't necessarily the most technical—they're the most complex.
Ethan Mollick, associate professor at the Wharton School and author of Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI, says job security in the AI era will increasingly depend on choosing roles that bundle multiple human skills together. That means emotional intelligence, judgment, creativity, and domain expertise—all woven into one. 'AI may outperform you in one or two things,' Mollick tells CNBC Make It, 'but if your job requires five or six of them, it's a lot harder to replace.'
It's the kind of insight that redefines how we think about employability in an increasingly automated world. And with AI usage surging—40% of U.S. workers now use it at least a few times a year, per a Gallup poll—these career choices have never mattered more. Mollick doesn't sugarcoat the AI wave ahead. Tech labs aren't just chasing progress—they're chasing a paradigm shift. 'Labs are aiming for machines smarter than humans within the next three years,' Mollick warns. 'They're betting on mass unemployment. Whether they succeed or not is still unclear, but we have to take it as a real possibility.'
Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company powers some of the most advanced AI systems, echoes that sentiment—albeit from a different vantage point. In a recent All-In podcast, Huang predicted AI will create more millionaires in five years than the internet did in 20, while also cautioning: 'Anybody who is not using AI will lose their job to someone who is.' What's the solution? According to Mollick, job seekers must rethink their strategy. 'Don't go for roles that do one thing,' he says. 'Pick a job like being a doctor—where you're expected to be good at empathy, diagnosis, hand skills, and research. If AI helps with some of it, you still have the rest.' This idea of "bundled roles"—where a single job draws on varied skills and responsibilities—could be the firewall against replacement. These complex, human-centered positions are harder for AI to replicate wholesale and leave more room for humans to collaborate with AI, not compete against it. AI's evolution could make entry-level roles scarce—or at least, radically different. 'Companies will need to rethink entry-level hiring,' Mollick notes. 'Not just for productivity, but for training future leaders.'
Without the chance to learn through repetition—what Mollick calls 'apprenticeship'—younger workers may miss out on foundational skills. The result could be a workforce with knowledge gaps AI can't fill, even as those same gaps are used to justify greater automation. Nvidia's Huang calls AI the 'greatest equalizer of our time' because it gives creative power to anyone who can express an idea. 'Everybody is a programmer now,' he says. But critics caution that this accessibility may also deepen divides between the AI-literate and those left behind.
Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, has a different concern: infrastructure. On the Moonshots podcast, Schmidt warned that AI's growth could be throttled not by chips, but by electricity. The U.S., he says, may need 92 more gigawatts of power to meet AI demands—equivalent to 92 new nuclear plants. As AI spreads into every corner of work, from payroll review (yes, Huang uses machine learning for that too) to high-stakes decision-making, the one thing that's clear is this: the rules are changing faster than most organizations can adapt. 'The tools are evolving fast,' Mollick says, 'but organizations aren't. And we can't ask employees to figure it all out on their own.' He believes the real danger isn't AI itself—but the lack of vision from leadership. Without a clear roadmap, workers are left adrift, trying to 'magic' their way into the future. In the race to stay relevant in the AI era, the best defense isn't to out-code or out-process a machine. It's to out-human it—by doubling down on the kind of nuanced, multi-layered work AI can't yet replicate. And by choosing jobs that ask you to wear many hats, not just one. Or as Mollick puts it: 'Bundled tasks are your best bet for surviving the AI takeover.'

How Hyundai is using AI to drive manufacturing, mobility and customer experience
At Hyundai Motor India Limited's (HMIL) Chennai manufacturing plant, AI is more than a buzzword, it's embedded in the fabric of day-to-day operations. The facility is equipped with Industry 4.0 technologies, robotics, and real-time quality monitoring systems. 'We've integrated IoT, AI, and big data analytics into our production processes. This not only enhances efficiency but also propels HMIL towards the vision of becoming a smart factory of the future,' a Hyundai Motor India spokesperson told ET Enterprise AI. AI is used across production, quality control, maintenance, and supply chain. Deep learning models help improve quality, while AI surveillance ensures safety by detecting human intrusions in critical zones. Connected cars, local contexts Hyundai's Bluelink platform is central to its AI-driven connected mobility strategy, with over 675,000 connected vehicles on Indian roads. The system uses AI-based diagnostics and customer data to offer personalised insights and features. 'We were among the first OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to introduce embedded connected car tech in India. The sales of connected cars rose from 4.7 per cent in 2019 to 25.7 per cent in 2024,' the spokesperson said. Other than features like real-time vehicle tracking, remote climate control, and in-car payments, Bluelink also includes localised voice commands in 10 Indian languages, a move that's helped expand adoption beyond metros. Voice, vernacular and virtual assistants Hyundai's AI-powered virtual assistant, deployed on its website and WhatsApp, handles around one lakh conversations a month. 'Customers can explore cars, book test drives, check offers, book a service and calculate service costs, using our AI powered virtual assistant,' said the spokesperson. The company has also focused on voice recognition in Hindi and Hinglish, with plans to expand into regional languages. In-car infotainment systems offer special greetings on special days and festivals, creating a more localised and human experience. From R&D to real-world impact The company's R&D hub in Hyderabad is building India-first features like multilingual clusters and infotainment interfaces, AI-driven song recommendations via JioSaavn, and Alexa integration for vehicle control. 'Our strategy revolves around simplifying decisions for customers and enhancing ownership experience at every stage,' the spokesperson said. Hyundai has also partnered with IITs and startups to fuel its innovation agenda. The ₹100-crore HTWO Innovation Centre in Chennai (in partnership with IIT Madras) is developing a localised hydrogen mobility ecosystem in a bid to create clean, sustainable mobility solutions in India. Simultaneously, the Hyundai Center of Excellence at IIT Delhi is aimed at advancing battery and electrification research tailored for India. Scaling CASE from India As Hyundai pushes forward on its global CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric) vision, its Indian operations are playing a dual role, by not just serving as a manufacturing and export hub but also contributing locally-relevant AI innovations. 'With the help of AI tools and smart diagnostics, the company has been effective in analysing data and planning tailored solutions based on customer needs,' the spokesperson added. From shopfloor automation to personalised post-sale experiences, Hyundai's AI playbook offers an example of how global OEMs can build with Bharat in mind.

Google introduces AI Skill Academy
Tech giant Google said that it has launched the Google News Initiative (GNI) AI Skills Academy, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) here. According to the company, the new initiative is aimed at equipping Indian newsrooms with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in an AI-powered future. 'Continuing our commitment to collaborate with news organisations across India and bring them Google's best-in-class technology, we're excited to announce the launch of the Google News Initiative AI Skills Academy in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Department of New Media,' the tech giant said in a statement. This will be a 10-week, hybrid training series, which is designed to equip newsrooms and media educators with foundational AI understanding and practical skills. Participants will learn to leverage Google's AI tools like NotebookLM, Gemini, AI Studio and Pinpoint to streamline workflows, boost efficiency, and free up valuable time for deeper and more creative research and in-depth, diverse storytelling. Launched by Google in an academic partnership with IIMC and with training support from How India Lives, this hybrid programme will empower participants to apply AI tools across a range of relevant use-cases. The programme will offer weekly deep dives, practical exercises, dedicated mentoring, and problem-solving sessions. This programme has been curated to provide participants with support to leverage AI to perform newsroom tasks more efficiently. 'We're also proud to support IIMC in training media educators and students across its campuses in six cities in India,' Google stated. This collaboration is a major step towards empowering media professionals and media educators with essential AI skills. 'As AI transforms journalism, this initiative will help them stay ahead. Andhra CM Naidu proposes Singapore collab to build strong AI ecosystem
VIJAYAWADA: On the third day of his Singapore tour, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu met with Prof. Mohan Kankanahalli, Deputy Executive Chairman of AI Singapore, to seek support in establishing AI research and innovation centres in Andhra Pradesh. Naidu emphasised the need to forge partnerships between AI Singapore and academic and research institutions in the State. He proposed collaborative AI training programmes, student exchange initiatives, and skill development modules to build a strong AI ecosystem. The discussions focused on deploying AI solutions in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and public services. Both sides also explored opportunities in deep tech and innovation. Later, Naidu met NG Jan Lin Wilin, Senior Vice President of SIA Engineering, and discussed opportunities in the aviation sector, particularly for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services. He briefed the company on the government's industry-friendly policies and the upcoming airport projects. The SIA senior executive assured a delegation would visit the State following Naidu's invitation.
