Harlem Globetrotters celebrating nearly 100 years of basketball
The legendary Harlem Globetrotters are officially counting down to their 100th anniversary with the unveiling of a striking new Centennial logo, symbolizing their rich legacy of sports, entertainment, and cultural impact.
Designed by the award-winning Matt Lehman Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, the new logo was crafted to reflect the Globetrotters' historic roots while projecting a bold, unified vision for the future. The design will serve as the creative cornerstone of the Globetrotters' Centennial celebration, set for 2026.
"We wanted to find the balance of past, present, and future in a fresh new look that was both unique and exciting, whilst paying homage to the many men and women players that have honored us as Globetrotters," said Keith Dawkins, President of the Harlem Globetrotters and Herschend Entertainment Studios. "This mark will connect all of the consumer touchpoints centered around our 100-year anniversary plans."
The new Centennial logo features key elements that pay tribute to the Globetrotters' legacy:
Red, white, and blue color scheme, echoing the team's signature basketball and uniforms.Five stars representing the original five Globetrotters: Walter "Toots" Wright, Byron "Fat" Long, Willis "Kid" Oliver, Andy Washington, and Al "Runt" Pullins.Years "1926" and "2026" prominently displayed to signify the founding and the upcoming anniversary.A 3D-style block font, inspired by lettering used in vintage game programs, a beloved collectible among Globetrotter fans.The iconic red, white, and blue ball featured at the center, symbolizing the enduring connection between past, present, and future.
As the team celebrates its 100th year, the Harlem Globetrotters continue to honor and elevate talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)-a tradition woven into the franchise's long-standing mission.
Several current Globetrotters hail from HBCU programs:
Prince Moss, a standout from Grambling State UniversityAngelo Sharpless, who starred at Elizabeth City State UniversityCrash McClure, formerly of Albany State University
In addition to today's players, HBCUs have played a role in shaping some of the franchise's most beloved legends. Among them was the iconic Fred "Curly" Neal, a former All-CIAA player at Johnson C. Smith University, who enjoyed a long and celebrated career with the Globetrotters, dazzling fans with his unmatched ball-handling skills and warm charisma.

Former Vanderbilt star, Centennial grad Tony Kemp announces MLB retirement after nine seasons
Tony Kemp has called an end to his baseball career. Kemp, a former Vanderbilt star and Centennial graduate, announced his retirement from baseball on social media on May 15. "After 12 years of professional baseball and nine seasons in the big leagues, I've decided to hang up the spikes," Kemp wrote in a social media statement. "... I want to say thank you to the game of baseball. A sport that humbles you daily, but you come back for more each day because it presents a new set of challenges. ACC quarterback headed to HBCU program
Former ACC quarterback Jack Brandon is headed to the HBCU ranks. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound passer spent the last four seasons at Boston College. He has now committed to Tennessee State University as the Tigers begin a new era under head coach Reggie Barlow. Brandon brings Power Five experience to an HBCU program fresh off a 9-4 season and a share of the OVC/Big South championship. Brandon never saw game action during his ACC career. Still, he showed promise at Cheshire Academy, where he threw for over 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. He also played basketball and baseball, showing his all-around athleticism. His move from the ACC to an HBCU highlights the talent shift happening across college football. Tennessee State is undergoing big changes. Former head coach Eddie George led the Tigers to the FCS playoffs before leaving for Bowling Green. Reggie Barlow now takes over after a strong run with Alabama State and the XFL's DC Defenders. Brandon gives the staff a quarterback with size, arm talent, and leadership. The addition of an ACC quarterback helps boost Tennessee State's HBCU resurgence. It also signals that HBCU football is attracting talent from top conferences. Brandon's presence could help stabilize the offense during the coaching transition. Tennessee State has an unknown outlook heading into 2025. As the team adjusts to a new system, Brandon will have the chance to lead the way. His move from the ACC to an HBCU is one many players are making these days, including a player for Tennessee State's first opponent. Fans and scouts will watch closely to see how he performs.
