Sabzazar police arrested three fugitives involved in the shooting death of their landlord, Wajid Hussain.
The suspects, reportedly a father and his two sons, had allegedly killed Hussain following a dispute over vacating a rented property and fled to a tribal area.
They were apprehended after an investigation led police to their location.
In the area of property crime, Gulshan Ravi police arrested three members of a professional theft ring, including its leader.
The gang had broken into a garments store at night and stolen merchandise worth millions of rupees.
A substantial portion of the stolen items was recovered during the operation. Separately, Ichhra police arrested a suspect involved in a major gold and cash heist from a local shop. The accused, an employee of the store, broke into the shop's locker and made off with 85 tolas of gold and a large sum of cash. Police recovered Rs100,000 in cash and the stolen gold during the arrest.

The notices were issued last month in the middle of negotiations between the business community and the government, underscoring the authorities' resolve to recover due sales and income taxes from individuals and companies. FBR Chairman Rashid Langrial believes that existing taxpayers are paying far less than their due taxes. He has begun applying a risk management system to identify loopholes in the tax returns filed by these entities and individuals over the past five years. Sources said that in the first phase, about 11,000 nudging notices were served by corporate tax offices in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Traders in Karachi and Lahore also observed a strike last month against the government's decision to give arrest powers to the FBR and add back half of over Rs200,000 in cash expenses in income tax calculations. When contacted, the FBR said these "non-intrusive and legally non-binding nudging notices" were served to encourage behavioural and social changes among taxpayers. "Please correct anomalies in your sales tax return. Your failure to act will be viewed as a choice not to comply," cautioned the FBR in its notices to companies and individuals in Lahore. The FBR warned that failure to address anomalies and file accurate returns in the future could lead to financial penalties, placement of FBR staff within businesses for monitoring, and best judgment assessments by tax commissioners, which can result in heavy fines. It also advised thousands of people that their bank accounts could be frozen and business premises sealed for non-compliance. Taxpayers were informed that the FBR used advanced data analytics to examine returns and benchmark them against peer businesses and jurisdictions. The analysis was fully automated without human involvement. The FBR said that for the tax years 2019 to 2024, its system identified anomalies in 2024 returns. These included unusually high sales claimed as exempt or under reduced-rate categories and low value addition based on the comparison of sales to purchases. "To avoid enforcement actions, ensure that these anomalies do not reoccur in subsequent returns and file correct sales tax returns for the upcoming due periods," the FBR cautioned. Jawed Bilwani, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), criticised the FBR's decision to serve notices during ongoing talks. He said many KCCI members received notices without any prior awareness campaign. Bilwani also criticised the FBR's method of comparing one shop's sales patterns with competitors', arguing that sales and value addition depend on brand and quality and are not uniform. "A customer may buy a shoe for Rs100 or Rs1,000. The FBR has no right to treat both values the same," he said. The FBR, however, claimed that nudging notices helped increase the number of returns filed in July. A final analysis will be made after the extended filing deadline ends on August 4. In another type of nudging notice, the FBR warned that reduced-rate sales were unusually high relative to domestic sales, with many sales claimed as exempt or under reduced-rate categories instead of taxable. "Your reported output tax is significantly lower than expected for businesses in your sector and location," the notice stated. However, the business community argued it is unjustified to compare similar businesses without accounting for differences in efficiency, cost structures, and management. The FBR also flagged excessive refund requests stemming from high input tax claims and an unusually high number of credit and debit notes. "Please correct anomalies in your sales tax return to avoid strict enforcement actions," stated another notice. The FBR added that enforcement actions, such as posting inspectors at business sites, particularly in cement factories, have significantly improved collections despite low sales. The FBR chairman has also transferred over 250 tax officers from grades 17 to 22 as part of a strategy to place only A and B category officers, as classified by various agencies, in key field positions.

Young man 'gang-raped' in honey trap case
A Facebook friendship led a young man into a honey trap, when he was reportedly gang-raped and robbed of cash and gifts he had brought to meet his online girlfriend in the jurisdiction of City Police Station. A 21-year-old man, Muneebur Rehman, resident of Nagri Bala, had befriended a girl through Facebook who identified herself as Urooj. She asked him to meet her at a deserted location in Haripur. When he reached the specified spot near the government garden in the City Police Station's area, the girl was not there. Instead, he was greeted by three young men, armed with a knife and pistol, who first beat him, then sexually assaulted him while recording a video of the act and snatched Rs35,000 in cash, a valuable mobile phone and the gift he had brought for the girl. The men threatened him to quietly return to his area and warned that if he reported the incident to the police, he would face even worse consequences. However, following the events, the victim called a friend in Haripur and went to the police station. In his report, the victim stated that he could identify all three unknown suspects if they appeared. Based on his statement, the City Police registered a case against the unidentified suspects. So far, no arrests have been made.

Several street crimes, 3 murder cases reported in capital city
ISLAMABAD: Auto thieves and robbers struck at various places in the heavily-guarded federal capital during the last week and deprived citizens of valuables as well as several motorbikes and cars. According to data gathered by Business Recorder, the theft of vehicles has risen sharply as auto-thief gangs have stolen or snatched 30 motorbikes and seven cars as well as 12 cases of street crimes [i.e. snatching of cash and mobile phone at gun point], two cases of daocity and 10 cases of robberies reported to the city's different police stations in Islamabad. Similarly, three cases of murder were also reported to two different police stations. Criminal gangs have been particularly active in areas such as Ramna, Khanna, Shalimar, Lohi Bher and Aabpara police station limits. Among the most shocking incidents when seven to eight armed men stormed into a house in D-Block in the PWD housing society and looted Rs800,000 in cash and six tolas of gold during the incident. They also snatched a car, bearing registration number AAK-644, before fleeing the scene. During another incident, a milk shop owner Yasir Gujjar allegedly killed two people; including Nazar and Sabir, who were reportedly owners of a local cattle pen and had been supplying milk to Yasir. In the period, three cases of street crime, one case of robbery as well as two case of motorbike and one case of theft was reported to Ramna police station, another three cases of auto theft, and one case each of street crime, daocity and robbery were registered at Khanna police station. Similarly, auto thieves stole three motorbikes, and robbers struck at one place at Shalimar police station and auto thieves stole four motorbikes and one case of street crime was registered at Lohi Bher police station.
