FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — The traffic lights at Alabama Highway 59 and Baldwin County 12 will be shut down this week for improvements.

According to a City of Foley news release, the signals will be shut down at 9 a.m. while a temporary signal is put in. Foley police will direct traffic while the light is down.
Crews will connect power to new connections and remove current signal poles that will have to be moved because of new turn lanes that are planned for that intersection, the release said.
The work should be done by 4 p.m., the release said.
According to the release, Alabama Department of Transportation officials have said the work was scheduled in such a way that the signal outage would be before most schools were out for summer and beach traffic increases.
The eastbound section of Baldwin County 12 has been closed as the work has been done, but is expected to be reopened by the end of May, according to ALDOT.
In addition to the new turn lane and signal improvements, the project also includes culvert extensions, the release said.

Residents plead for road to be fixed, say services refuse to use it

HARTSELLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Orchid Private Drive in Hartselle is about a half-mile stretch of gravel, dirt, and potholes that are so big that emergency services refuse to use it. 'We have to deal with the road, and we have to worry about the kids getting hit and getting stuck and getting our cars torn up,' said homeowner Leighia Hudson. 'Safe and effective': Pediatrician discusses MMR vaccine amid high measles case numbers Hudson is one of the homeowners on Orchid Private Drive where mail services, vehicles, school buses and trash pickup are just not possible to receive. 'All of the water on the road and the holes and everything just tears things up,' Betty Cobb said. 'That's why the buses would not come or none of the mail and the garbage trucks or anybody like that would come.' According to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), Orchid Private Drive is a private road and is not listed in the county registry. But the homeowners believe that if the county would accept the road into its inventory, then the county could help maintain it. News 19 reached out to the Morgan County Commission, which provided a statement that reads in part: 'The Morgan County Commission does not perform any maintenance or has any legal authority to do so. This private drive is not part of the Morgan County Road System.' Leighia Hudson said that her grandmother owned and maintained the road until they lost ownership of the state in 2007. 'The state picked it up and once the state picked it up, they gave her time to get it back, and she did not,' Hudson explained. While the proprietorship of the road remains unclear, the homeowners are pleading with the county to help them fix it before further damage is done. 'It would be plenty helpful if we knew they could do something, so this way we would not have to worry no more,' said Cobb. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Alabama's interstate lane closures to be removed for 4th of July holiday weekend

In hopes of contributing to efficient and safe holiday travel this Independence Day weekend, the Alabama Department of Transportation will remove temporary lane closures on interstates from noon Thursday, July 3, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 6. With the expected increased traffic flow, the removal of the temporary lane closures hopes to better protect drivers, and construction and maintenance crews. ALDOT offered tips to address safer driving: Eliminate distractions: Keep your focus on the road by avoiding distractions such as texting, scrolling or talking on the phone. ALDOT reminds motorists that Alabama has a hands-free law. This law prohibits drivers from holding electronic devices while operating a vehicle. Buckle up: Seat belts remain the most effective protection against serious injury in a crash. Always ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt properly. Avoid impaired driving. Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that impairs your ability to react. Staying sober behind the wheel protects you and everyone on the road. Slow down. Speeding increases risks of serious injury or death and makes sudden hazards harder to avoid. Watch posted speed limits and adjust for traffic, weather and road conditions. What to know Live traffic feeds, with road condition information including crashes, can be found at or through the ALGO Traffic app. The current map shows dozens of temporary lane closures, for maintenance or construction work, throughout the state, with some of the heaviest concentration along I-59/20, which runs roughly east-west, through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.
