Bill Belichick, UNC football receive zero votes in preseason US LBM Coaches Poll

USA Today4 days ago
Last week, North Carolina football learned it was chosen to finish eighth among the 17 ACC teams in the conference's preseason poll.
A week later, the Tar Heels learned they will enter the Bill Belichick era without a single vote in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, which was released on Monday, Aug. 4. It is the first time since the 2019 college football season that North Carolina received zero votes in the preseason Coaches Poll.
The Tar Heels began last season unranked under Mack Brown, but did receive six votes.

While it might have been expected following a 6-7 season and coaching change, the Tar Heels not receiving a single vote is significant, given Belichick, an NFL coaching legend, is leading the team. The votes for the Coaches Poll are comprised of other Division I coaches.
However, it is a reminder of the challenge the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach has in front of him in Chapel Hill, as he embarks on his first season coaching the college ranks.
Coming off a 6-7 season under Brown and interim head coach Freddie Kitchens — now the Tar Heels' offensive coordinator — North Carolina has hit the ground running with rebuilding the roster through the transfer portal. According to 247Sports, North Carolina brought in 40 players from the portal and built the No. 8-ranked transfer class in the country.
The Tar Heels also lost several key players from last year's roster to the portal in the same process, including linebacker Amare Campbell, defensive lineman Beau Atkinson and offensive lineman Zach Rice, among others.
As noted by the Fayetteville Observer, North Carolina didn't have a single player listed on the preseason All-ACC team for the first time in six years. The Tar Heels have also not named a starting quarterback heading into the season, as senior Max Johnson, South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez and highly touted four-star recruit Bryce Baker all remain in the mix for it.
"We have a lot of new players, a little over 40 from the spring and 70 guys that weren't on last year's team," Belichick said at a media availability on Sunday, Aug. 3. "The first portal, we're just trying to find guys to fill the team. Second portal, we're looking for good football players. We felt like any position, if the player wanted to come in and compete — and we thought it was a good player — then this is the right spot for him. We'll give everybody an opportunity to compete. We're going to have to earn our spots on the field."
The Tar Heels' Oct. 4 matchup vs. Clemson is the only scheduled conference regular season game vs. a preseason top 25 opponent. North Carolina is also set to face Syracuse and in-state rivals Duke and NC State this year.
North Carolina will kick off the season with a nationally televised primetime game on Monday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET against TCU at Kenan Stadium.

ESPN will not air Spike Lee's docuseries on Colin Kaepernick, citing 'creative differences'

Director Spike Lee's multi-part documentary series for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a national debate when he protested racial injustice nearly a decade ago, will not be released, the filmmaker and ESPN said. "ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," ESPN said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday. "Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film." Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series was not going to be released. "It's not coming out. That's all I can say," Lee said on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, California. Asked why, the Oscar-winning director declined to elaborate, citing a nondisclosure agreement. "I can't. I signed a nondisclosure. I can't talk about it." Kaepernick played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016. He ignited a national debate in 2016 when he knelt during the U.S. national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality. The 37-year-old athlete has not played in the NFL since that season. Many experts believed his political activism, which triggered a movement that drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, was the key reason teams were wary of signing him. He later filed a collusion grievance against team owners, which was settled with the league in 2019. A representative for Kaepernick said the player had no comment about the docuseries on Saturday. Production on the series began in 2022, with Walt Disney-owned ESPN touting it as a "full, first-person account" of Kaepernick's journey that would feature extensive interviews with the player. In September, Puck News reported the project faced delays amid disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the film, and that ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was open to allowing the filmmakers to shop it elsewhere.

Pittsburgh Steelers Defender Named Top Trade Candidate

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been rather busy this offseason, adding some massive names on both sides of the ball to bolster their Super Bowl hopes. But all of the Steelers' moves come with consequences, namely in the form of a roster crunch before the regular season begins. More news: Panthers Linked to Pro Bowl Sack Artist That Could Make Them 'Elite' Head coach Mike Tomlin will have some difficult decisions to make prior to Week 1, so some players who were daily members of the roster last year or for the last couple of seasons may find themselves on the chopping block fairly soon. Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors has identified one Pittsburgh player in particular who could find himself dealt before the 2025 campaign begins: linebacker Mark Robinson. "Pittsburgh has been aggressive this offseason and focused on adding to the roster rather than subtracting," Ulrich wrote. "That theme will likely continue this month. There's not a lot of excess on this roster to trade, especially not after sending away S Minkah Fitzpatrick. Robinson is at the end of a deep linebacker room and could be a flip or claim." PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 6: Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers looks on during the Pittsburgh Steelers OTA offseason workout at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on June 6 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers announced a contract extension for Mike Tomlin. MoreRobinson played in all 17 games last season, logging six tackles and a couple of forced fumbles in a special teams role. He played in 66 percent of the Steelers' special teams snaps, so he has definitely developed into a solid contributing member for the squad. The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ole Miss, was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Robinson scarcely played during his rookie campaign, finishing with just nine tackles in four contests. The following year, however, he appeared in every game and even made a pair of starts, totaling 30 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. As nice as Robinson has been as a depth piece, Tomlin probably isn't going to lose any sleep over parting ways with him. He is replaceable, and if the Steelers are actually able to extract a Day 3 draft pick out of another team for him, Pittsburgh would almost certainly make the move. More news: Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion Of course, whether or not any club is actually willing to offer that for Robinson is another question. The more likely scenario is that the Steelers will cut the Leesburg, Ga. native, who is preparing to enter the final year of his contract. Pittsburgh added names such as quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and cornerback Jalen Ramsey this offseason, trying to take the next step after going 10-7 and losing in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs last year.
