Popular Japanese character Npochamu aims for overseas expansion

TOKYO - Japanese character Npochamu, marketed as a goofy and rotund yoghurt fairy, is aiming to capitalise on its popularity overseas, with trading house Itochu gaining merchandising rights for countries and regions in Asia and North America. Npochamu and friend Kimimaro are already a hit among young people in Japan and South Korea, with goods such as charms featuring their likeness dangling from bags on city streets, while clips of their antics have amassed millions of views online. Created by Japanese illustrator Kawaisouni!, whose moniker comes from an expression roughly meaning 'How pitiful!' in English, Npochamu started gaining attention in 2022 after the artist began posting content of the white marshmallow-like figure on social media. Itochu will develop Npochamu through a Hong Kong-based investee firm that also holds the rights to the Finnish storybook characters known as The Moomins. The Japanese conglomerate aims to increase the total annual distribution value of Npochamu content to around 150 billion yen (S$1.3 billion) by 2029. Its current value is around 10 billion yen. In Japan and South Korea, a separate Japanese firm holds the rights to and manages the sales of Npochamu goods such as plushies and keychains. The Japanese government has positioned the export of goods and content like manga and video games as part of its 'Cool Japan' strategy for economic growth. KYODO NEWS Top stories Swipe. Select. 'Proof of love between 2 nations': Malaysian man creates SG60 shirt to thank Singaporeans who helped him through hard times , Singapore News

A Malaysian man designed a special SG60 shirt to acknowledge and thank the Singaporeans who supported him during tough times. In a video posted to TikTok on Aug 9, Afiq Abdul Latif shared the newly designed shirt, saying that it represented "memories and love" and "two lands that were once one". The 31-year-old father of two is the founder of Joyy Colony, a store in Johor Bahru where he designs and prints customised shirts. Speaking in the video, Afiq said that when he faced some personal struggles in 2023, it was Singaporeans who supported him even though he was "just someone who creates content" about the country. "This is not just a shirt. This is proof of the love between two nations, two cultures, one soul," he said. "From Malaysia to Singapore, happy 60th National Day." Afiq lived in Singapore for a decade, starting out as a crew member for a fast food chain in 2013 and working his way up to a managerial role. He then moved back to Malaysia with his wife and eldest child after the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Berita Harian. When his wife was six months pregnant with their eldest son, they were told that the baby was at risk of having Down Syndrome. Doctors advised the couple to terminate the pregnancy, according to the Malay daily. This was a huge blow to Afiq and his wife, who had been trying to have a baby for five years. Upon learning about his situation, Afiq said that his Singaporean followers stepped up to offer him words of encouragement, advice and support. "There were four or five people who came to [my] work [place], met me and gave me words of encouragement, including parents who have children with Down Syndrome," he said, adding that some even offered financial help. Although Afiq's son was not born with Down Syndrome, he was prone to seizures while growing up. This meant Afiq had to shoulder significant medical expenses, reported Berita Harian. When the family of three returned to Johor Bahru in 2023, they had to move out of their rented house and stay in Afiq's shop while waiting for their new home to be completed, according to the Malay daily. It was during this period that Afiq began selling his custom-printed t-shirts on TikTok live. A four-day session resulted in the sale of 700 shirts, most of which were bought by Singaporeans, said the 31-year-old, adding that this was the "trigger" for the establishment of his brand. In the future, Afiq hopes to expand the brand further. He plans to open a European-themed cafe by 2026 which will also sell his t-shirt collection, reported Berita Harian. Netizens divided over man who pays delivery riders to go home to their families on National Day

A man who gave out money to food delivery riders so they could go home to their families on National Day has divided netizens. A 97-second video of the man was shared on Reddit by myliferabaksia with the heading, "Salute brother, very nice gesture". "Hi guys, since today is National Day, what I am going to do is, I'm going to give money to Grab riders so they can go home and spend time with their loved ones," says the man. He then asks five riders why they are working on a public holiday, how much they need to make, and offers to pay them so they can stop work. "Why like that ah? First time seh, not scam ah?" asks one rider. "Serious, ah?" says another. He offers one rider $100, while a later shot of his phone shows that he offers another female rider $80. He then tells them he has transferred the money and tells them to complete their last delivery before going home to rest. "I know some of the comments are going to say, why must record and post on social media, you want to show off," he says at the end of the clip. "The purpose of this video is not to act nice or to show off, whatsoever. The purpose of this video is to remind you guys to spend time with your loved ones. "I know we all must work and find money but there's one thing that money can't buy - which is time. And the thing is, you only have one family, so spend as much time with them, OK?" Some netizens skeptical, others praise man "Hope the giving is genuine and done on video to inspire others to be generous. Intention is key and only he knows," said Redditor Massive_Constant9074 Several commenters felt it was humiliating to the riders. "I have mixed feelings about this… On one hand it's a nice gesture, on the other, it does feel a bit humiliating and like a grab (pun) for likes," said Extreme-Quantity2454. Others wanted to believe he meant well. "Find me one of the persons that was humiliated by his gesture, then I will agree. Otherwise, why do you always have to look at the worst?" said ChocCooki3. Ukfi said: "For those who say this is humiliating, have you ever tried to do grab delivery? I own a car and i do the occasional hitch. The way ppl treat grab drivers are just so so bad. Can't imagine doing grab food. "This guy is offering cold hard cash. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement between two consenting adults. Both get to benefit and nobody got hurt. This is way better than a lot of other things on the internet." But there was humour, too, amid the serious comments. "Thanks to this guy all my deliveries on National Day were late," said DownRangeDistillery.
