Adoni MLA draws flak over casteist remarks, tenders apology

Time of India5 hours ago

Tirupati: Adoni BJP MLA Dr P Venkata Parthasarathi has tendered an apology after his casteist-remarks' video drew criticism from the Dalit and SC-ST communities and from various quarters as well.
The Adoni MLA, who went to attend an official programme at Dhanapuram village on June 16, was addressing the villagers from a makeshift stage erected close to the local temple premises.
In the video which is going viral, the MLA calls for local sarpanch Chandrasekhar to come onto the stage. But when he can't find the sarpanch, Parthasarathi asks the leaders on the stage if Chandrasekhar was a Christian.
Then a local leader identified as Gudise Krishnamma tells the MLA that Chandrasekhar belongs to the SC community, and Chandrasekhar stops himself from going up onto the stage.
Various pro-Dalit organisations and human rights forums strongly condemned the incident and demanded an apology from the ruling party legislator after the video of the incident went viral on various social media platforms since Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Adoni MLA Parthasarathi clarified that he himself was from the BC community and had taken part in many Dalit movements in the past.
"I had no intention to hurt anyone's sentiments on the caste or religious lines. The local sarpanch Chandrasekhar had recently joined the BJP from the YSRCP and when I called up his name to come onto the stage and he wasn't seen anywhere, I doubted if he belonged to Christianity and was reluctant to come onto the stage which was close to the temple premises," he said.
Recalling his association with numerous groups fighting for Dalit rights, Parthasarathi stated that he was tendering an open apology if the incident had hurt the sentiments of the Dalit groups and others.

Monsoon session likely in mid-July, crowd management bill to steal focus

Bengaluru: Although BJP, the principal opposition party, has been demanding a special session of the legislature to debate the recent stadium stampede tragedy, the govt is leaning towards holding a regular monsoon session in mid-July. Authorities have tentatively fixed July 14 as the start date for the session though the cabinet, will discuss the session's schedule at the next meeting. "A two-week session with 10 working days in mid-July fits well before the festival season," said a senior official from the parliamentary affairs department. "The cabinet may either set the dates or authorise the chief minister to decide and advise the governor accordingly." By convention, the gap between two sessions should not exceed six months. Since the budget session — the previous one — ended on March 21, the govt has until the third week of Sept to convene the next session. But CM Siddaramaiah is said to be in favour of an early session amid BJP's pressure over the stampede tragedy that claimed 11 lives during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. Siddaramaiah reportedly wants to end the public discourse by facilitating a debate on the incident in the assembly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Зачем на ночь сжигают лавровый лист? Undo Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, addressing the controversy, urged the opposition to use parliamentary procedures rather than protests. "It is an unfortunate incident," he said. "We took stern action, including suspending police officials and ordering a judicial probe. Let the opposition debate the issue in the assembly instead of creating a public spectacle for political gain." The session is expected to begin with the assembly ratifying revocation of suspension of 18 BJP legislators. These MLAs were suspended on the last day of the previous session on charges of indiscipline and unruly behaviour, even as the opposition demanded a judicial investigation over the alleged honey trap targeting cooperation minister KN Rajanna and other members. Speaker UT Khader decided to revoke the suspensions after Siddaramaiah intervened, but rules demand the decision must be ratified through a resolution. The session is likely to be stormy as BJP and JD(S) are preparing to corner the govt over the stampede tragedy. In response, the govt plans to introduce a bill on crowd management. "We want to bring in a policy for crowd management and it is the need of the hour. We will prepare a framework, and a bill may be introduced," said Shivakumar. Parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the govt has already prepared a draft bill, while home minister G Parameshwara, whose department is expected to pilot the bill, said standard operating procedures on managing crowds during big events are being considered for inclusion in the proposed legislation. Other legislations likely to come up include the Gig Workers Welfare Bill, currently in the form of an ordinance, and the Rohith Vemula Bill aimed at protecting Dalit students in higher educational institutions. The contentious proposed bill to increase work hours in the private sector is also expected to generate debate, along with the proposed caste census.

On Sena foundation day, Uddhav leaves door open for MNS as he says BJP trying to prevent Marathi unity

Mumbai: Indicating that the option of an alliance with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) was on the cards, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said he would do what was in the minds of Shiv Sainiks and the people of the state, and that people would know about it soon. Uddhav mentioned that to prevent this from happening, "servants of their masters" were meeting people in hotels, referring to a recent meeting between MNS chief Raj Thackeray and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at a Bandra hotel. Uddhav stated that the BJP was trying to prevent the Marathi manoos from coming together in Mumbai. Uddhav also took a dig at PM Narendra Modi over Operation Sindoor, saying that the country needs a prime minister and Modi was just the BJP's prime minister. Uddhav said he would not allow the imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra and the Centre must first make Hindi compulsory in Gujarat. He remarked that just ahead of the BMC polls, the imposition of Hindi was nothing but an attempt to create division among Marathis and non-Marathis. "They have not gained control of Mumbai, they are worried about what will happen to the master's friend, what will happen to Adani after Mumbai is back in our hands. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 境界のないゲームを発見する BuzzDaily Winners ゲームをプレイ Undo Due to this, efforts are being made to prevent the power of the Marathi people from coming together. Mumbai belongs to us. They are trying to divide and rule and split the Marathi manoos and prevent their strength from coming together," Uddhav said while speaking at an event on the 59th anniversary of the Shiv Sena at Sion's Shanmukhananda Hall. "Shethji (master) and their servants are celebrating their anniversary there today. They are saying that it will not happen, it will not happen (Sena UBT's alliance with MNS). But what do you want to do? We will see what we have to do. If you think that you will erase the brand of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray, we will erase your name," Uddhav said. "What is the need to make Hindi mandatory? We are not against Hindi, but we will not tolerate Hindi imposition. BJP planned all this (making Hindi compulsory) to create a fight between Marathis and non-Marathis on the eve of elections. After diverting attention, they are free to commit corruption. Till now, they cheated on the promises they made. They did not keep their promises to the people in the elections. Then how could they keep the promise they made to me, the promise of 2.5 years as chief minister? When we formed the INDIA bloc, you were not ashamed to compare us with the Indian Mujahideen. You compare us with terrorists and send our own MPs all over the world to tell us what you have done," Uddhav said. "The country needs a home minister, not the burglar Amit Shah. Today the country needs a defence minister, not the goon-protecting Devendra Fadnavis and Rajnath Singh," Uddhav said.
