World Environment Day celebrated at CFTRI
As part of World Environment Day, Shashwat Bharat Setu — an exhibition to educate and empower communities on sustainable lifestyles and alternatives — was inaugurated at Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) here on Thursday.
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar inaugurated the expo. It is an initiative of The Eco Factory Foundation (TEFF) Pune and provides an immersive experience to inspire sustainable living. The exhibited materials are in Kannada.
The CFTRI said Shashwat Bharat Setu — Winning Net Zero exhibit developed by TEFF — is a first of its kind mobile sustainability awareness centre and aligns with the national missions like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, apart from the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. 'It creates an awareness on making use of biodegradable waste and recycle plastic, opting for eco-friendly choices, and reducing carbon footprint,' said the CFTRI.
The exhibit shows visitors concepts like waste to wealth, water management, energy conservation, reduction in carbon footprint, importance of circular economy, achieving sustainability in rural, urban, industrial sectors and by individuals in the path to becoming net zero.
The expo touches upon crucial points that will revitalise environment, exemplify the concept of waste to wealth by providing sustainable solutions that will not only benefit the environment but also create livelihood opportunities for communities.
The exhibition is open to schools and colleges from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. till June 8, and is open to public on June 7 and 8.
To mark the 75th foundation day of CFTRI-CSIR, platinum jubilee gardens or Amrita Vana was inaugurated by planting 75 plants on the campus. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director, CFTRI, Anand Chordia, founder, TEFF, and others were present.

NMC & Green Vigil conduct awareness campaigns at Sitabuldi
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Green Vigil Foundation celebrated World Environment Day by conducting public awareness campaigns at World Trade Centre, Sitabuldi and Sitabuldi Market on this year's theme – 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. During the campaign, members of Green Vigil Foundation and NMC team interacted with citizens, shopkeepers, street vendors on ill effects of usage of single use plastic (SUP), eradication of SUP, adopting circular economy, urgency of adopting green living practices and environment friendly lifestyles. The message was also conveyed through various posters and placards focusing on phasing out of SUP and adopting sustainable options with change in lifestyles and habits. Surbhi Jaiswal, team lead, Green Vigil explained, plastic is non bio-degradable, hence , remains in nature for years, plastic carry bags are choking our sewerage system, rivers and oceans are polluted with huge deposition of microplastic, leaving waste food in plastic carry bags are causing death to cattle. Prominently present during the campaign were Rajesh Bhagat, deputy commissioner, NMC, Dr Ganjendra Mahalle, chief sanitary officer, NMC, Manish Soni, PRO NMC, Dhananjay Jadhav, assistant commissioner, NMC, Anup Khandelwal, Vilas Uttarwar , Kisan Agarwal and others. ‘Protecting Nature Is Not Optional, It's Urgent'
1 2 3 Nagpur: Development without ecology is not development it is devastation in disguise, remarked, environmentalist and member of the State Board for Wildlife Shrikant Tekade while addressing a World Environment Day programme organised by RTO Nagpur in collaboration with the Institute of Environment, Ecology, Health & Management (IEEHM). Speaking on this year's theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution and Deforestation', Tekade painted a grim picture of plastic misuse and its growing impact on both urban and forest ecosystems. He pointed out that Nagpur generates over 1,100 tonnes of municipal waste daily, of which nearly 90 tonnes is plastic, much of it non-recyclable. He cited disturbing examples of plastic being found in the stomachs of cows and wildlife deaths due to plastic ingestion. "We have turned our cities into plastic jungles," he said, urging people to change their habits before nature reaches a point of no return. He also warned against burning plastic, which emits harmful toxins linked to cancer and respiratory diseases. On air pollution, Tekade shared a sobering statistic over 12 lakh deaths occur annually in India due to air pollution.
