Joe Root Becomes 1st England Batter To Score 7000 Runs In ODIs
In 179 ODIs played so far for England, Root has 7082 runs to his name. He is the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs.
Joe Root was in action for England on Sunday (June 1) in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series against the West Indies. The 34-year-old right-handed batter from Yorkshire faced 139 balls for the Harry Brook-led side at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and scored a career-best 166. His 166-run knock helped England chase down the target of 309 runs in 48.5 overs for the loss of seven wickets and win the match by 3 wickets.
During his 166-run knock, Root entered his name in the history books by becoming the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs. Root needed 84 runs on Sunday to cross the 7000-run mark, and he achieved the objective by scoring a boundary on the fourth ball of the 33rd over of England's innings bowled by Matthew Forde.
Before becoming the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs, Root went past Eoin Morgan's tally of 6957 runs to become the leading run getter in the 50-over format of the game for the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Most runs for ENG in ODIs
Root came out to bat at No. 3 for England in Cardiff and added 85 runs for the third wicket with Brook (47 from 36) and 143 runs for the sixth wicket with Will Jacks (49 from 58 balls).
Root is now England's leading run getter in Tests and ODIs. The 34-year-old batter became the first English batter to score 13,000 runs in Test cricket last month. He will be a key batter for the Ben Stokes-led side in the five-match Test series against India.
India will face England in a five-match Test series. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24, and the next four matches will be played in Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester and The Oval, respectively.
Root has played 30 Tests for England against India so far and has 2846 runs to his name. If he manages to score 154 runs in the upcoming five matches, then he will become the first batter in the world to score 3000 runs in Test cricket against India.

Wales wing Rees-Zammit returns to rugby with Bristol after NFL dream ends
Bristol have signed Louis Rees-Zammit following his return to rugby union after the Wales wing gave up on his 18-month long bid to break into the NFL. HT Image English Premiership side Bristol said Thursday that Rees-Zammit was joining with "immediate effect" ahead of the new league season. No further details about his contract were disclosed. The 24-year-old dramatically left rugby union in January 2024 to pursue a career in American football and was on the training squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not play in a regular-season game. Earlier this month Rees-Zammit, who made his name in rugby union with Gloucester, a fierce local rival of Bristol, said he was returning to the 15-a-side code. He spent last season with Jacksonville Jaguars, having been cut by the Chiefs the previous campaign, but failed to make an NFL appearance for either franchise as a wide receiver after originally switching sports by joining the NFL's International Player Pathway Program in 2024. By then he had already scored 14 tries in 32 Tests for Wales and been selected for the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa. Bristol, who reached the Premiership semi-finals last season before losing to eventual champions Bath, are one of the most attacking teams in English rugby's top flight. Their 95 tries was the joint-highest in the division during the 2024/25 campaign and Rees-Zammit said their approach made them an "obvious choice". "The style of rugby the team play -- all about entertaining the fans and growing the game -- perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field," Rees-Zammit said in a Bristol statement. "I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values." Bristol's opening match of the new Premiership season is against Leicester on September 28. Rees-Zammit made his Gloucester debut soon after turning 18 and went on to score 42 tries in 77 matches for the Cherry and Whites during a six-year stint at Kingsholm. His first Wales cap came in 2020 aged 19, with his speed and finishing ability making him a rising star of the sport. Bears boss Pat Lam has no doubt Rees-Zammit, who will join the squad on Saturday, is an ideal fit, saying: "He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club. "At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is. The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him." Wales' new coach, Steve Tandy, has already said Rees-Zammit could be in contention for a Test recall as soon as the November internationals. jdg/nf

Kho Kho World Cup Winners To Join PM Narendra Modi In Independence Day Celebrations At Red Fort
In a historic first for the indigenous sport, players from the Indian men's and women's Kho Kho World Cup-winning teams are set to join the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the iconic Red Fort on August 15. Notably, this year's Independence Day celebration will host around 5,000 special guests from diverse fields, including sportspersons, innovators, and community leaders. In order to celebrate the burgeoning growth of an indigenous sport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited 30 of India's best Kho Kho players, who won the maiden World Cup in January 2025 in New Delhi. The first-ever Kho Kho World Cup, which was held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from January 13 to 19, saw participation from 39 teams (20 men's and 19 women's) representing 23 countries across six continents. The inclusion of Kho Kho at such a significant national gathering also highlights how the government is elevating indigenous games. Earlier, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also advocated for Kho Kho's inclusion in the Asian Games and the 2036 Olympics, calling it a "collective effort" involving players, federations, and the Sports Ministry to boost its international footprint. The celebration also aligns with India's 2036 Olympic bid and the pitch to return Kho Kho to the Games, exactly a century after its 1936 Berlin demonstration appearance. "Being invited to the Red Fort for Independence Day is one of the proudest moments of my life. Winning the World Cup earlier this year was historic for us, but this honour from the nation shows that Kho Kho is finally getting the recognition it deserves," said Pratik Waikar, a member of the World Cup-winning team. "It is a great promotion for the indigenous sport of Kho Kho. I have only seen Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations on television, and this is the first time I will attend them with my teammates. It's a great feeling," said Nirmala Bhati, a member of the World Cup-winning women's team. Congratulating the athletes, the Chairman of Administration & Organisation, Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI), said, "When our players stand in honour of the National Anthem at the Red Fort, it will be a moment of pride for the entire Kho Kho fraternity. We are grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya for recognising and honouring the 'Jaabaaz' players of Bharatiya Khel." This milestone invitation stands as a symbolic recognition of Kho Kho's growing stature in the country's sporting landscape, reinforcing the government's commitment to promoting India's indigenous sports on national and global platforms. Notably, fifteen of these 30 players will be part of the player draft of the new season of Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK), beginning November 29.
