Sridhar Deshpande's books on Kaleshwaram, irrigation make an attempt to reveal facts: Harish Rao

The Hindu03-05-2025

HYDERABAD
Former minister for irrigation and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao has observed that two books authored by retired irrigation engineer Sridhar Rao Deshpande make an attempt to set the record straight on the large-scale misinformation campaign being run against Kaleshwaram Project by the Congress government.
Speaking after releasing two books in Telugu – 'Kaleshwaram Project: Questions – Criticisms – Distortions – Clarifications' and 'A Decade of Telangana's Journey in Irrigation' here on Friday night, along with another former minister S. Niranjan Reddy, former chairman of the Water Resources Development Corporation V. Prakash and others, he said that there was a need to place facts before people at a time when falsehoods were being propagated about Kaleshwaram.
Mr. Harish Rao stated that the author had made a sincere attempt to dispel misinformation about Kaleshwaram along with documentary support point-by-point from availability of water at Tummidihatti and Medigadda to water storage facility in all three barrages. He accused the Congress Government of deliberately maligning Kaleshwaram purely for political gains and also to cover up its failures to protect State's interests in the matter of Krishna and Godavari waters.
'At a time when lies are being dressed up and paraded as truth, it takes courage and conviction to publish such fact-based books,' Mr. Harish Rao said, adding that they also act as an answer to the Congress party's misinformation campaign as they contain facts, statistics, documents and data.
He urged intellectuals, employees and youth of Telangana to read the books and take the facts deep into people.
Mr. Niranjan Reddy stressed the need to take the facts to people at a time when Andhra Pradesh had intensified efforts with aggression to divert more Krishna and Godavari water through new systems to outside the basin areas when the in-basin areas of Telangana were still longing for water for irrigation needs.

Memorial for former Rajya Sabha member Kollur Mallappa in Yadgir to be fulfilled soon

With the State Cabinet taking a decision, the long-pending demand of the people of Yadgir district to have a memorial for veteran leader and former Rajya Sabha member Kollur Mallappa will soon be fulfilled. On earlier occasions, veteran politician and Rajya Sabha MP M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who has great admiration for Mallappa for his selfless service to the people over several decades, had appealed to the Chief Minister to build a memorial for Mallappa. However, the proposed memorial work was somehow delayed. Meanwhile, Minister for Small Scale Industries and district in-charge Sharanabasappa Darshanapur met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and requested him to grant the required land free for the purpose. The Chief Minister, who earmarked ₹2 crore for the memorial, showed concern over building the memorial for the late politician during the recent Cabinet meeting and sanctioned 2.17 acres of land free as requested by Mr. Darshanapur. Mallappa was born to a Kuruba (Halumatha) community family in 1905 in Pogalapur village in Yadgir taluk. He developed patriotism from his childhood and met Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram in 1934. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and joined the Congress then. He also participated in the freedom movement against British rule and came in contact with Jawaharlal Nehru during Congress meeting at Mumbai in 1942 as he was the only politician from the Hyderabad Karnataka region to take part in that conference. He was known in the region for his fearless fight against Hyderabad Nizams and for that reason, he was jailed. After Independence, Mallappa was elected as a legislator from the Surpur Assembly Constituency in Kalaburagi district to the Hyderabad State Assembly in 1952. He was again elected from the Sedam Assembly Constituency to the Mysore State Assembly in 1957, after reorganisation of States. Mallappa shifted to Central politics after the former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi got him elected to the Rajya Sabha. He, then, was elected thrice in 1968, 1974 and 1984. He was associated with many prominent Congress leaders of that era. Some of his followers say that Mallappa respectfully refused an offer given by Indira Gandhi to become Chief Minister of the State. Mallappa died in 2004, after a prolonged illness. The people of Yadgir district have expressed gratitude to the State government, especially Mr. Siddaramaiah, for respecting the Hyderabad-Karnataka Gandhi by building a memorial for Mallappa. Mr. Darshanapur, who wrote a letter to the Chief Minister and put pressure on the government to get sanctioned the required land for the memorial, has expressed his gratitude too. 'I will personally supervise the building of a memorial to make it a significant landmark in the district. I will take a delegation to meet the Chief Minister for an additional grant, if required, for the construction of a memorial,' the Minister added. Meanwhile, MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur has thanked Mr. Siddaramaiah for his concern to building a memorial for Mallappa. 'His selfless service to the people is unparalleled. He remains a model for all politicians,' Mr. Tunnur said.

Op Sindoor feather in cap of Modi government? 100%, says Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday endorsed India's Operation Sindoor, saying it was a feather in the cap for the government and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a "global leader".In an exclusive interview with India Today TV's Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, Naidu said PM Modi played a role in halting the military conflict between India and Pakistan, saying his wisdom per cent. This (Operation Sindoor) is a feather in the cap of the Modi government. No other leader can do this so perfectly without precision. The Pahalgam terror attack was unfortunate and husbands were killed in front of their wives," he said. He said PM Modi named India's military operation as Sindoor to fulfill the sentiments of the Indian women and take revenge against terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, which killed 25 tourists and a local."Within 20 minutes, we destroyed terror pockets and did not attack civilians and defence installations. The conflict ended at the right time. PM Modi ended the fighting. Is it not our credit? His wisdom prevailed. If the war is prolonged, then we will lose," Naidu Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, India destroyed terror camps at nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), killing over 100 terrorists. Pakistan then escalated the situation, by firing a barrage of drones and missiles towards border cities and defence installations in India. However, India hit back and launched a counter-offensive, damaging several Pakistani military bases, before both countries agreed to stop about Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's claim whether India succumbed to the US's pressure, Naidu said there "was no need to surrender to anybody"."We have our own strategies. Who will control Trump? He will talk as he likes. But at the same time, the wisdom of PM Modi prevailed. We are very clear. We won't quarrel unnecessarily. If anybody comes after us, we won't leave them. We are capable of protecting our nation," he Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said while India wants friendly relations with all countries, there was "no need to have any recommendation or support from anywhere"."PM Modi is emerging as a tall leader globally. That is the pride of our nation," he said.

Government urged to reintroduce Telugu medium to protect interest of students and teachers

Human Rights Forum (HRF) Viziangaram district convener and retired headmaster Bankuru Joginaidu on Sunday urged the government to reintroduce Telugu medium in all schools to protect the interests of the students hailing from rural areas as they cannot understand lessons taught in English in the initial stages. He said that it would also benefit over 3,800 school assistants to get promotions as headmasters and protect their interests in accordance with the service rules and regulations. In a press release, he said that the government's recent decision to shift 3,800 school assistants as headmasters of model primary school while changing the existing rules could have helped them to get promotions as headmasters in their respective primary schools. 'The so called rationalisation and shifting of school assistants to model high schools would weaken primary schools in the near future. The primary schools will not have sufficient number of teachers and the dropout of students would also be high. Hence, we request the government to introduce Telugu medium so that the students would have another medium as an option and it would help retain school assistants in the same educational institutions. There is no need to shift them to model schools while disturbing their service rules,' said Mr. Joginaidu.
