Nasreddine Nabi reveals the team's captain for the next season.
Nasreddine Nabi has ushered in a fresh chapter for Kaizer Chiefs, appointing Angolan defender Inácio Miguel as the club's new permanent captain following Yusuf Maart's departure.
Maart, who spent three seasons with Amakhosi after joining from Sekhukhune United in 2022, sealed his legacy by scoring the winning goal in last season's Nedbank Cup final—ending Chiefs' decade-long trophy drought. The 30-year-old midfielder has since moved to Austrian side SV Ried, leaving the armband vacant.
Miguel, who led the team during their pre-season tour in the Netherlands, was again entrusted with the captaincy in Saturday's Toyota Cup clash against Asante Kotoko. Despite a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Nabi confirmed the defender will retain the role for the upcoming campaign.
'Today, Miguel was our captain—and he will continue as captain for the season,' the Chiefs coach stated.
Reflecting on the match, Nabi expressed optimism despite the loss, acknowledging missed opportunities while praising his squad's effort.
'Overall, I'm pleased with the performance—it showed us where we stand,' he said. 'We had chances to win, especially in the final ten minutes, but it wasn't to be. Still, the players gave everything. With two weeks before our league opener, we'll work on refining both our strengths and weaknesses.'
Chiefs begin their 2025/26 Premiership campaign with an away fixture against Stellenbosch FC.

Sundowns coach Cardoso reacts to MTN8 Pirates draw: May the best team win
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns headline the MTN8 semifinal draw. Sundowns thrashed Richards Bay 4-0 to reach the semis on Sunday, while Pirates beat Polokwane City 2-0 on Saturday. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is chasing his first PSL knockout trophy. On paper, many would argue that the MTN8 semifinal between cup holders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns is a dress rehearsal for what could be yet another two-horse race for the premiership title. This is because the two teams have finished first and second, respectively, in the past three seasons, with no real sustained challenge from elsewhere. However, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said, while he expected the two teams to push each other once again, he cautioned against looking too far ahead. May the best team win. This is how Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso reacted after his team was drawn against cup holders Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 two-legged semifinals. Stellenbosch FC will play Sekhukhune United in the other semi. @City_Press — Tiisetso Malepa (@TiisetsoMalepa) August 4, 2025 'I think we should not emphasise it in that manner. But I believe that the two teams will give a lot throughout the season,' said Cardoso after the semifinal draw, which was conducted immediately after Sundowns smashed Richards Bay 4-0 in the last quarterfinal clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. First-half goals from striker Iqraam Rayners and an own goal from Bay captain Simphiwe Mcineka gave Sundowns a 2-0 lead at the break. Rayners completed his brace 10 minutes into the second half. Substitute Siyabonga Mabena put the final nail in Bay's coffin with a goal in the 76th minute. Last year's losing finalists, Stellenbosch FC, will battle Sekhukhune United at home in the other semifinal. Sekhukhune are in their first-ever semifinal in this competition. The league is yet to confirm the dates and venues for the R10 million winner-takes-all Wafa Wafa tournament. Cardoso, who joined Sundowns last December and won his first premiership title in May, is on the hunt for his first PSL knockout trophy. The Portuguese lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semifinals in April in his first participation in a cup competition. Sundowns were beaten by Stellenbosch in the MTN8 semifinals last year and lost against unfancied Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup final in November. The two results, which occurred under Cardoso's predecessor, Manqoba Mngqithi, played a big role in the coaching change. Cardoso said he hoped his team would be firing on all cylinders during the semifinal clash against Pirates. I'm sure we and Pirates are in an emotionally uncomfortable position, but we always knew that the draw could go this way in the semifinals or the final. So, may the best team win. Miguel Cardoso He added: 'Obviously, there must be a result, and it will be interesting because the semifinals are played over two legs. 'Usually, the strongest team wins those big matches, and I think they will be two very tough matches. 'Hopefully, the two matches will come when we are in our two strongest moments, maybe in September.' Sundowns will get the defence of their premiership title under way away against Chippa United on Saturday.

All Blacks select 4 uncapped players in a squad beset by injuries for the Rugby Championship
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has selected loose-forward Simon Parker among four uncapped players in his extended squad for the Rugby Championship which begins for New Zealand with back-to-back matches in Argentina. The 22-year-old Chiefs backrower, who is 197-centimeters (6'4") and weighs 119 kilograms (262 pounds) adds size and physicality to the All Blacks pack ahead of impending matches against Rugby World Cup champion South Africa. The All Blacks are coming off a 3-0 series sweep over France last month, but Robertson has been forced to include a number of players as cover in a squad ravaged by injuries. New Zealand has a particular shortage at scrumhalf, where Cam Roigard and Noah Hotham both will miss the start of the Championship. Roigard has a broken foot and Hotham has a serious ankle sprain and is out for up to two months. Also facing lengthy periods on the sideline are winger Caleb Clarke, backrower Luke Jacobson, prop Tyrel Lomax. Captain Scott Barrett, backrower Wallace Sititi, prop Tamaiti Williams, flyhalf Beauden Barrett and lock Tupou Vaa'i will be sidelined for shorter periods. All were named in Robertson's squad Monday but may miss the tests against Argentina at Cordoba on Aug. 17 and Buenos Aires on Aug. 24. Robertson has recalled scrumhalf Finlay Christie after an absence of almost a year to provide backup for Cortez Ratima, who currently is his only fit scrumhalf. Three uncapped players, prop Tevita Mafileo, scrumhalf Kyle Preston and utility back Leroy Carter, have been named to provide injury backup along with returning prop George Bower, lock Josh Lord and Christie. Backrower Peter Lakai returns from injury. 'Simon Parker had an impressive Super Rugby season with the Chiefs and brings a valuable skill set and physicality that we are looking forward to working with," Robertson said. "He has the ability to play blindside or No. 8 and has gained experience in a number of New Zealand representative teams, so we believe he is ready for the step up. 'While we are clearly disappointed for our men who are currently recovering from injuries, that has also created opportunities for a number of deserving players including the uncapped Tevita Mafileo, Kyle Preston and Leroy Carter." Robertson said the new All Blacks squad members earned the opportunity through consistent performance 'we are excited about what they will bring.' ___ AP rugby:
