Glasgow city centre building to be transformed into 'best in Europe' hotel
The B listed property in Bothwell Street is one of the largest American-Classical style commercial buildings in the city and has been largely empty in recent years. A largely vacant building in the heart of Glasgow is poised to be converted into a hotel, with aspirations to rank among the operator's premier establishments in Europe, pending planning approval. The Grade B listed edifice on Bothwell Street stands as one of the city's most prominent American-Classical style commercial structures, as per the design proposals submitted to the local authority. Plans have been put forward to transform the erstwhile office space and incorporate an extension, creating a new "upper scale hotel" boasting 235 rooms. The identity of the hotel brand set to take over remains undisclosed in the planning documents. A design statement revealed: "The proposed confidential hotel operator is particularly excited about the potential provided by the building to create a best-in-class hotel of distinction which they anticipate will be one of the finest in their operator's European portfolio." It further noted: "The listed building is soon to become entirely unoccupied. The commercial office use for which the building was built and designed is no longer viable. The building has early indications of corrosion of the structural steel frame which need to be addressed to prevent damage to the significant external masonry façade." The redevelopment scheme includes the addition of a two-storey rooftop extension atop the current eight-storey office block. The design document went on to state: "The proposed development is conservation-led and will integrate and repurpose the significant parts of the listed building into the new hotel use, whilst retaining its external appearance and presence within the street." 'People Make Glasgow' tower to be transformed into city centre flats

Union Manchester — Vita's first co-living site — launched earlier this year, featuring over 1,600 beds and shared amenities such as co-working areas, a bar, wellness spaces, and lounges. The Union model combines flexible, room-based rental, flatmate matching, and a focus on shared living to build a strong sense of community. Unlike Vita's student housing developments across Glasgow, Union Manchester was marketed specifically to non-students. Vita is also behind a controversial proposal to convert the former O2 ABC music venue into a food hall and student accommodation. Though approved by the city council, those plans were later called in by the Scottish Government following objections from the neighbouring Glasgow School of Art. Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken welcomed the new Met Tower development, calling it a clear vote of confidence in the future of city centre living. "Vita's plans will bring what is an emerging accommodation concept to Glasgow, one that's been successful elsewhere and which can meet the needs of many younger residents," she said.
