'The Chosen' swaps Texas for Italy to film the crucifixion for the hit drama about Jesus Christ

Matera, in the south of Italy, is known as the 'City of Stones' for its architecture. For the next season of 'The Chosen,' it'll be known by another name: Jerusalem.
With its ancient caves, breathtaking scenery, dramatic cliffs and houses made of stone, Matera is doubling as the ancient city for the hit religious drama's sixth season, which focuses on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This month, the cast and crew traded their Texas studio for three weeks in Italy, during which The Associated Press visited the set.

George Harrison Xanthis, who plays the apostle John, says that filming in Matera has helped his performance by immersing him in the world of the show. On the show's sets in Texas and Utah, 'you do step from civilization into the ancient world, whereas here you are just always in the ancient world,' he tells the AP. 'It's amazing.'
Director and showrunner Dallas Jenkins explains he wanted authenticity with the crucifixion on the backdrop of a real horizon. While the city of Matera — which has also provided the setting for 'The Passion of the Christ,' 'Mary Magdalene' and even 'No Time to Die' — does most of the work, the tingly and warm smell of spices in the air, coming from a prop cart, adds to the atmosphere.
Starring as Jesus is Jonathan Roumie, beloved by the show's fans who blush around him like he's an actual religious figure, revealing he's part of their daily prayers. This observation was confirmed by Jenkins, who has witnessed people crying, touching his hands and calling him Jesus.
'Seeing Jonathan reminds them of the experience they have with Jesus. So, there is a lot of tears. But they know the difference,' says Jenkins. Apart from a friendly hello, Roumie was not available to the media during the set visit, so he could stay concentrated for the demanding scenes that saw him covered in blood with a swollen prosthetic eye closed shut.

Other members of the cast have experienced emotional encounters with the audience, albeit with perhaps not the same intensity as Roumie's. Vanessa Benavente, who plays Mother Mary, recalls being recognized during school drop-off.
'It was kind of out of nowhere. And I was very surprised because I was wearing a hat, it was very hard to even see my face,' she remembers. 'Them saying 'I know you are not her but it's like the closest thing' — it's also a lot of responsibility.'
Jenkins originally financed the pilot of 'The Chosen' through crowdfunding in 2017. While its success saw it move to Amazon Prime Video, the show continues to be supplemented by crowdfunding and the nonprofit Come and See Foundation. Beginning with Season 3, bundled episodes were released theatrically. Season 5 was first released to theaters in three parts as 'The Chosen: Last Supper,' together grossing tens of millions of dollars at the worldwide box office.
When Jenkins yells 'Action!' the set resounds with the actors' cries as they follow Roumie as Jesus, carrying the cross to the hill of Golgotha. Elizabeth Tabish, who plays Mary Magdalene, was still caught up in the scene when she stepped off set teary-eyed for an interview.

'It's just pure devastation, to watch your friend be paraded through the streets and mocked, and publicly executed. He never hurt anyone, you know. So there's a lot of grief,' said the actor, wiping her eyes.
She's not worried about bringing those feelings back home — a plate of authentic Italian pasta after work for three weeks straight will have the power to uplift and help her move on, she assures.
The first two episodes of Season 5 debuted Sunday on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S., and the rest will release over the next two weeks. Jenkins says the episodes focus on 'the most famous moment in the scriptures,' such as the Last Supper and Judas' betrayal. As the stakes rise and the show grows, his goal is for the audience to have a more personal and intimate experience when they watch.
'That's the challenge,' he says. 'Making sure that the audience still can connect with the characters, not just the size of the story.'

Season 5 will be available to watch for free on the show's app of the same name and website beginning Sept. 13. Season 6 will air in 2027, and the series will come to an end with its seventh season, focused on Jesus' resurrection.

'Final Destination: Bloodlines' OTT release: When and where to watch this horror movie

After a strong theatrical run, Final Destination: Bloodlines—the sixth instalment in the high-grossing horror franchise—has landed on OTT platforms, giving digital audiences a chance to catch up with the latest chapter in the cult series. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the film premiered in theatres on May 16 and arrived on Amazon Prime Video India on June 17. With a global box office collection of $271.7 million, it has already become the most commercially successful film in the Final Destination franchise to date. Final Destination: Bloodlines is currently available on Prime Video in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The film can be rented for ₹ 399 or purchased for ₹ 499. It's also available on Apple TV with similar rental and purchase options. For audiences in the U.S., Warner Bros. has also made the title available on platforms like Fandango at Home and Movies Anywhere, with a physical release—including Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Steelbook editions—scheduled for July 22. A collector's box set of all six Final Destination films will also hit the shelves that day. The film introduces a new protagonist, Stefani Reyes (played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana), who begins experiencing disturbing premonitions tied to her family's past, specifically, a catastrophic hotel collapse from 1968. As Stefani investigates the eerie visions, she uncovers a multigenerational curse linked to her grandmother, Iris Campbell. The narrative plays on the franchise's hallmark theme—death's unstoppable pursuit—with a fresh twist centred on inherited trauma. Tony Todd reprises his role as the ominous William Bludworth, anchoring the story in franchise continuity. Bloodlines opened to ₹ 4.5 crore in India and has grossed over ₹ 76 crore domestically, despite competition from Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning and local titles. In North America, the film earned $130.64 million, ranking it among the top 20 highest-grossing horror films of all time in the region. Its international earnings stood at $141.1 million, pushing the global total past $271 million against a $50 million production budget. Critical reception has also been favourable, with the film holding a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed entry in the franchise. For fans of horror and franchise cinema, Final Destination: Bloodlines offers both nostalgia and a new narrative arc. With a strong box office track record and high streaming accessibility, the film underscores the growing synergy between theatrical releases and premium digital platforms.

Aamir Khan rejects Rs 120 crore OTT deal for Sitaare Zameen Par; stands firm on 9 am FDFS, fair ticket rates: ‘No blockbuster pricing'

Despite not being a big-ticket, action-oriented star vehicle typical of this era, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par is generating massive hype. Helmed by RS Prasanna, known for the Tamil romantic comedy Kalyana Samayal Saadham (2013) and its Hindi remake Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), the sports comedy-drama is billed as a spiritual successor to Aamir's directorial debut Taare Zameen Par (2007). Interestingly, social media is abuzz with expectations that the film will offer a breath of fresh air amidst the current flood of mindless actioners. With the movie's release just around the corner, Aamir Khan, who also serves as the film's co-producer, has made some bold decisions regarding its theatrical and OTT premieres, including its first-day-first-show (FDFS) timing. In a significant and gutsy move, the actor-producer has reportedly turned down a massive offer from a major OTT platform, choosing instead to give the movie a full theatrical run without rushing a digital premiere. Also Read | Boman Irani recalls Sunil Dutt's precious life lesson that he follows till date: 'On Munna Bhai sets, he asked why would I eat alone' According to trade analyst Komal Nahta, Amazon Prime Video offered Rs 120 crore for the digital rights to the film, but Aamir declined the deal. While many might assume this was a tactic to attract higher offers from other platforms, Nahta clarified in Film Information that Aamir made the decision 'to try and change the game'. In recent times, Aamir has frequently voiced concerns about the standard eight-week window between theatrical and digital releases, calling it a 'faulty business model'. With this, the Bollywood biggie has once again proven that he isn't one of those 'all talk and no action' stars and that he has decided to lead by example and be the change he wishes to witness around him. Nahta pointed out that if Aamir's strategy works and the film's absence of an OTT release drives up box office revenue, it could be a revelation for the industry. On the flip side, if the strategy backfires, Sitaare Zameen Par could end up losing Rs 120 crore in easy revenue. Meanwhile, ahead of the film's release on June 20 (Friday), Aamir has also issued a series of instructions to exhibitors regarding show timings. According to Bollywood Hungama, the makers have requested not to begin shows before 9 am. They've also asked theatres to maintain popular weekend pricing, rather than inflating ticket rates as per the blockbuster pricing technique. While single-screen theatres wishing to screen Sitaare Zameen Par have been instructed to dedicate all shows exclusively to the film, without alternating titles, cinema halls with two screens have been asked to allot a total of eight shows per day for the sports comedy drama. 'Multiplexes with 3, 4, 5 and 6 screens need to play 11, 14, 16 and 19 shows a day, respectively. For 7-screen multiplexes, 22 shows are a must while for 8-screen plexes, 25 shows are mandatory in a day. There should be 28 shows in 9-screen cinemas and for multiplexes with 10 screens and more, the requirement is 31 shows,' Bollywood Hungama quoted a source as saying.

Aamir Khan suffers Rs 120 crore loss ahead of Sitare Zameen Par release due to....

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's film Sitaare Zameen Par is going to be released in theatres on June 20. There is a lot of excitement ahead of the release as we will be seeing Aamir on the big screen after Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. These days Aamir Khan is very busy promoting his film. Amid this, Aamir is in the headlines for refusing Rs 120 crore because he doesn't want Sitaare Zameen Par film to be released on OTT after eight weeks of the film's release. Sitaare Zameen Par, featuring nine neurodivergent children in central roles, is backed by Aamir Khan Productions. It also stars Genelia Deshmukh in a key role. The film, which explores themes of inclusion, empathy, and perseverance through the story of specially abled children, is set to be released in theatres on Friday, June 20. As per trade analyst Komal Nahta, Aamir Khan turned down an offer of Rs 120 crore from Amazon Prime Video for the digital rights of the film. He said that Aamir has 'decided to try and change the game' for films releasing in theatres. 'Khan has taken one of the biggest risks so far as its release strategy is concerned. Not because he wanted more, not because he wanted Netflix to bid higher for the film and thereby engage the two OTT platforms in a bidding war so that he could be the ultimate beneficiary, not for any similar reason. He politely said 'no' because he has decided to try and change the game', said the analyst. He further said, Frankly, 'Amazon Prime's offer was too lucrative for anyone to turn down. But what probably Aamir wants to do is to try and assess whether the absence of a film's availability on any digital platform eight weeks post-release can prod them on to visit the cinemas. If this non-availability of his film on OTT indeed increases footfalls in cinemas, it may not just revive the industry and give box-office business the much-needed boost but it could also start a trend of either producers emulating Aamir Khan's example or at least the industry as a whole revisiting the issue of when to release a film digitally.' The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared Aamir Khan's upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, the spiritual sequel to the 2007 critically-acclaimed movie Taare Zameen Par, without any cuts. The movie presents 10 rising stars Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.
