As part of the PlayStation summer sale, Sony has cut the price of various PS5 consoles, with the cheapest being less than £340.
Sony's PlayStation 5 has been out for nearly five years, but it still hasn't received any permanent price cut – instead, Sony has bumped up the price several times since 2020.
The company has blamed the 'challenging economic environment' for these price hikes, most recently in April, but it means any temporary discounts are worth capitalising on to lessen the financial damage.
If you've been on the fence about a PlayStation 5, Sony has now slashed the prices across various models on the PlayStation Direct store.
As part of its summer sale, which has also seen thousands of games discounted across the PlayStation Store, the PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive is £45 off at £434.99. However, if you don't require a disc drive (or prefer to buy one later), you can pick up the digital version for only £339.99, which is £90 off the original £429.99 price.
Before the recent price hike, the PlayStation 5 digital edition cost £389.99, so you're still saving £50 from the previous price.

If you fancy picking up another DualSense controller, there are other bundles too. The digital version with two controllers is £90 off at £389.99, while the standard console with another DualSense is £45 off at £484.99. More Trending
While there's no discount on the PS5 Pro, you can pick up the base PlayStation 5 console with a 24-month PlayStation Plus Premium subscription for £634.99, which is £45 off. This is the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which usually costs £119.99 per year.
These deals are live now and run until July 29, 2025, while supplies last.
It's not a bad time to pick up the console either. PlayStation 5 exclusive Death Stranding 2: On The Beach recently launched, and Ghost of Yōtei is set to drop on October 2, 2025. You can also catch up on the likes of Returnal, Astro Bot, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
While the PlayStation 5 is still going strong, Sony has already been talking about the console's successor, which is expected to launch around 2027.

Games magazine IGN said the announcement looks to be "more of an acknowledgment that the feature is being worked on, then, ahead of it being spotted by users". In a blog post, PlayStation's VP of Product Management Shuzo Kikuchi said he was delighted to announce the launch. "With this update, you may notice a new option in your settings menu called Power Saver," he said. "If not enabled, or if games do not support the feature, the performance will not be scaled back and power consumption will not be reduced." Sony did not release any further details of Power Saver other than to also confirm that Power Saver will not be compatible with the console's VR mode That will affect any customer who has bought a PlayStation VR2 headset. Sony said more details on which games will support Power Saver, and how game performance will be degraded should you choose to turn it on, will be announced in the future. PS6 handheld is real suggests new PS5 power saver mode

A PS5 update has given credence to a rumour around a PS6 handheld, as Sony rolls out greater flexibility for the DualSense controller. The prospect of the PlayStation 6 being released in the next two years doesn't feel like a particularly exciting proposition, considering the PlayStation 5's current lack of exclusives, but rumours suggest Sony might have two new consoles currently in the pipeline. Since last year, there's been growing evidence to suggest Sony is planning a PlayStation 6 handheld along with a home console. However, it's unclear if this will be a standalone console like the PS Vita, a remote player like the PlayStation Portal, or some kind of hybrid. While Sony hasn't said anything definitive, a new system update for the PlayStation 5 has verified one detail from a prior rumour connected to the handheld, suggesting it could actually be happening. In a PlayStation blog post, Sony announced plans to roll out a new power saver mode in the PlayStation 5 settings. The feature is not set to go live until some point in the future, but for some reason Sony has taken it upon itself to explain how it works now. 'While this feature won't be available during the beta phase, once it officially launches, supported PlayStation 5 games will scale back performance and will allow your PlayStation 5 to reduce its power consumption when the feature is enabled optionally by gamers,' reads the blog post. Sony highlights the feature as being part of the company's overall plan to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, but prior rumours from leaker Kepler previously mentioned how Sony is preparing a 'reduced bandwidth' mode for the PlayStation 5, in order to unify development of games across the console and its planned handheld. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. This power saver mode sounds exactly like what was rumoured before, so a new handheld suddenly sounds a lot more likely. Kepler previously claimed the portable device's power will be somewhere between an Xbox Series S and a standard PlayStation 5, with 15W SoC on 3nm processors. He also said the device will be able to run PlayStation 5 games but not at the same resolution or frame rate, hence why this power saver mode might be needed. More Trending Sony has talked about the PlayStation 6 before, and even hinted at a portable console, but there's still no official word on when it could be released. The same leaker, Kepler, estimated it could be in the second half of 2027. The power saver mode isn't the only feature Sony is testing for the PlayStation 5. Elsewhere in the blog post, the company announced it is rolling out the ability to pair DualSense controllers across multiple devices simultaneously. This means you'll be able to connect your controller across your PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, or other devices at the same time, without needing to reconnect when you switch between them. Beta access for this update is only available in select countries (US, Canada, UK, Japan, Germany, and France) to invited individuals, with plans to release it globally in the 'coming months'.
