Penang ferry terminal to get seaview deck, commercial spaces in revitalisation effort
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the revitalisation aims to modernise the terminal with an attractive design to improve visitor comfort and satisfaction. — Picture courtesy of Penang Port Commission GEORGE TOWN: The Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda (PRTU) ferry terminal on Penang island will undergo an upgrade to include a seaview observatory deck, commercial spaces, and open car parks, the Penang Port Commission (PPC) announced today. PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the revitalisation aims to modernise the terminal with an attractive design to improve visitor comfort and satisfaction. Advertisement 'This will boost operational productivity,' Yeoh said in a statement. He added that the commercial spaces will feature a food and beverage hub and a garden bridge, alongside other attractions to draw more tourists. The PRTU upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve ferry operations, Yeoh noted. In addition, he said the extension of the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) now enables Oasis-class cruise ships to dock simultaneously, accommodating up to 12,000 passengers at a time. 'SPCT has been developed as a regional cruise ship hub, and projects around the terminal are being prioritised to complement these upgrades and attract more cruise ships to Penang,' he said. Yeoh also announced plans to collaborate with Printhero to establish a ferry museum showcasing Penang's iconic ferries, which once served as a crucial transportation link between Seberang Perai and the island. 'The conservation project aims to preserve the state's maritime heritage while offering visitors a chance to explore the history of water transportation in Malaysia. The old ferry, which carries countless memories, will be revived as a historical tourism attraction,' he said. Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook visited the PPC and reviewed key projects, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal Expansion Master Plan. According to Yeoh, the expansion involves reclamation work over 322.83 hectares and includes plans for a major petroleum hub in the northern region called the Northern Petroleum Terminal (NPT). 'The NPT will be a bulk petroleum storage facility designed to accommodate Medium Range (MR) class tankers,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anthony Loke Praises AirAsia Captain & Crew After Thunderstorm Causes Unexpected 4-Hour Flight
Flight delays are undeniably inconvenient, but we often hear stories from those waiting at the airport, not from passengers already on board the aircraft. One of the main causes of delays is adverse weather, as pilots must carefully navigate storms to ensure a safe landing at the destination. What was meant to be a 50-minute journey turned into a four-hour flight when AirAsia flight AK6047, travelling from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur, was caught in a thunderstorm that prevented the plane from landing on the runway. Transport Minister Anthony Loke was one of the passengers onboard, and he recently shared his experience during the flight and how well the crew pulled through this challenge. Yesterday (Sunday, 8th June), Anthony Loke shared a Facebook post about his recent flight back to Kuala Lumpur, describing how a 50-minute journey turned into a four-hour ordeal due to severe weather conditions. According to the politician, the flight was smooth at first until it was time to descend. As the aircraft approached the runway, strong crosswinds and a gusty storm forced the pilot to abort the landing and circle the KLIA airspace. 'Unexpected weather conditions are one of the biggest challenges in airline operations. I was later informed that at least five AirAsia flights were diverted, and likely many others as well. As a result, Captain Teng Huah Jer made the decision to divert to Penang for refuelling before returning to KLIA once the weather improved for a safe landing,' he wrote. The Transport Minister praised the captain for remaining calm and keeping passengers informed throughout the ordeal. He also commended the cabin crew for handling the situation with composure and ensuring that passengers were well taken care of during the unexpectedly long flight. 'We landed safely at KLIA at 2:40 am, almost 4 hours after the plane took off from Senai! As a sign of moral support and appreciation to the crew, I waited for all passengers to disembark before leaving the aircraft,' he added. One can only imagine how anxious the passengers must have felt during the flight, but thankfully, everything ended well. A job well done to AirAsia and the crew!
