Keshav Upadhye, a young, dynamic and prominent face, has been working with the Bharatiya Janata Party for over two decades. In 2014, the then state president Devendra Fadnavis had appointed Upadhye as the spokesperson in his team. Owing to his journalistic background and better understanding of the socio-economic issues of the state, Upadhye made a mark as a spokesperson in a short span. He articulates the views of the party and aggressively defends the party on various platforms including the Marathi and Hindi national news channels. Keshav Upadhye worked for the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and after completing his degree in Journalism from Ranade Institute, Pune, he began his career as a journalist with daily Pudhari, Loksatta and Mumbai Tarun Bharat. Knowing the pulse of the news, he writes on varied topics and on various platforms like the newspapers, blogs and other social media platforms. He was involved in two study groups formed by the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini in 2006 to study the naxalite movement and its adverse impact on the development of Chhatisgarh. The Prabodhini later published this report. He was also a part of the Prabodhini's fact-finding committee formed to study the Solapur riots. LESS ... MORE
US President Donald Trump has recently announced to increase import duty on Indian goods up to 50 percent. Trump's announcement is being discussed at various levels on international platforms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to this US sanction in very clear terms. 'I will never compromise with the interests of India's farmers, animal husbandry sector and the fishermen', with this response, Prime Minister Modi has sent a direct message to the whole world that India will not bow to anyone's pressure. India's oil purchase from Russia in international trade is an objectionable issue for the US.
The US insists that India should not buy oil from Russia. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has given a blunt reply to the Trump administration by releasing the details of the US's purchase from Russia. The Trump administration has decided to impose a 50 percent import duty on Brazil along with India.
While discussing the sanctions imposed on India by a superpower like America, the message that the central government will not compromise with India's interests has been given very calmly without any fuss. Industrialists like Anand Mahindra and Harsh Goenka have openly supported this stance of the Modi government. The picture that has emerged on this occasion is that the entire nation has decided not to bow down to America.
America has used its economic empire to impose sanctions on India many times before. In the very recent past, i.e. in 1998, after the Pokhran test, the then Bill Clinton administration had imposed sanctions on India. Even then, the National Democratic Alliance government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had not bowed down to America.
As India has become a significant player in the global political scene, various powers have consistently attempted to corner it over the last 11 years. Despite these efforts, there are no signs of India's development momentum slowing down. As a result, pressure tactics such as increasing import restrictions are now being employed.
Donald Trump's recent language towards India has become extremely ugly and derogatory. Prime Minister Modi has preferred to respond to this language with calm actions rather than aggressive responses. After India's strong response to the Pahalgam massacre in the form of 'Operation Sindoor', the US's stance has suddenly become anti-India.
Donald Trump had often boasted that he himself intervened to stop the conflict between India and Pakistan and brokered the ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also responded to that as well in a very moderate language.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has given a befitting reply to Trump, who announced that he is increasing import duty on India to 50 percent in order to stop the purchase of oil from Russia. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has shown evidence that the US and the European Union are still trading with Russia.
The Trump administration is trying to penetrate a huge market like India. There is an insistence on opening up India's agricultural sector to US imports.
The Trump administration is also trying to ensure that there is a large amount of American investment in the sectors of animal husbandry, dairy farming, and fishing. The Trump administration is taking an insistent stance to bring genetically modified crops (GM crops), corn, wheat, and ethanol to India, which can impact Indian agricultural sustainability. The ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries have made it clear what America is fighting for.
That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a clear message to the Trump administration that he will never compromise with the interests of Indian farmers, and that he is ready to pay any price for it.
India is getting crude oil from Russia at a discounted rate, which is benefiting the country, that is why we have been buying crude oil from Russia for the last 3 years. Even after the war with Ukraine, European countries have not stopped buying oil from Russia. America's duplicity has been proven by imposing a mere 15 percent import tax on European countries that buy oil from Russia and a 50 percent import tax on India.
Trump has vented his disgust with India by stating that India's economy is dead. Every person in India has a debt of Rs 4.8 lakh. In a country like America, there is a debt of 90 thousand 400 dollars per person which is about 80 lakhs. The Trump administration, which is striving to maintain its dominance in the global trade arena, has started a vigorous attempt to put pressure on India by increasing import tariffs.
The Trump administration has announced the increase in import duties even as trade talks between India and the US continue. One could say that the Trump administration, which is under the illusion that India will succumb to its pressure tactics, has clearly not understood the Modi government.
The industry and trade sector of the country is firmly behind the Modi government. In the last 11 years, the Modi government has focused on increasing domestic production in the sectors of defence, automobiles, electronics, and medicines to implement the concept of 'self-reliant India'. In the last 11 years, India's imports have been decreasing step by step and exports have been increasing significantly. While building trade relations, the role of 'national interest is paramount' will be maintained as a priority. This is the true identity of the new India.

Media's role crucial in strengthening democracy: Haryana assembly speaker

Haryana Vidhan Sabha speaker Harvinder Kalyan on Monday said the media plays a vital role in strengthening the democratic system by acting as a bridge between the public and the legislature. Haryana Vidhan Sabha speaker Harvinder Kalyan during a workshop in Chandigarh on Tuesday. (Sourced) Inaugurating a training workshop for the press corps at Haryana Niwas, Chandigarh, he said impartial and responsible reporting on policy-making, budget reviews and public interest issues is the media's duty. 'Factual accuracy, respectful language and a positive outlook are essential for guiding society in the right direction,' he said. The workshop, organised by the Vidhan Sabha, aimed to familiarise journalists with legislative procedures, parliamentary traditions and digital platforms. Kalyan also referred to the 'One Nation, One Legislature' concept and the House's digital transition, stressing the media's role in making India a developed nation by 2047. 'There is no limit to learning. No matter how high we reach, there is always room for improvement and learning,' Kalyan said. Former Haryana chief secretary Keshni Anand Arora said diligence, positive thinking and inner happiness are keys to success, urging journalists to work with optimism despite challenges. She said that having a clear goal in life is essential. 'Without a goal, one is like a ship without direction,' she said, noting that the media faces many challenges. PRS Legislative Research's Chakshu Roy cautioned that covering expunged remarks or unpublished documents from the House amounts to a breach of privilege. Haryana Sahitya and Sanskriti Academy director Chander Trikha stressed that credibility must remain intact despite challenges, even as Panjab University's Gurmeet Singh, a professor in the Hindi department, advised journalists to strengthen their technical knowledge.

‘Never thought we would see his face again': 19-year-old Bengal migrant returns weeks after sent to Bangladesh

A 19-year-old Bengali migrant who was detained by Rajasthan police on June 19 and later deported to Bangladesh has finally returned home, his family and local leaders said on Tuesday. The case came to light after a video of Amir Sheikh, filmed in Bangladesh, circulated on social media. Amir, a resident of Jalalpur village under Kaliachowk police station in Malda, had gone to Rajasthan to work as a construction labourer. However, his family lost contact with him after his detention. Amir lost his mother five years ago and his father works as a migrant labourer in Uttar Pradesh. Ajmal said the family first saw the video last month and learned that Amir had been pushed into Bangladesh. ' We got a call last evening from someone in Basirhat. I did not know who he was. We then spoke with Amir on video call. I identified him. He said he was in a Bangladesh jail. Then we were told that he would be brought back. This morning we received another call stating that he is with the BSF. We are waiting for further instructions,' Ajmal said. In a video message on social media, Isha Khan Choudhury, Congress MP from Malda Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency, said central agencies and the Border Security Forces (BSF) had traced Amir. 'We are happy to share with the people of the constituency and press colleagues that a wrongly expelled Indian citizen was traced in Bangladesh by the central government and BSF,' she said. After being detained in the labour camp in Rajasthan, Mr Amir Sheikh is being released today. BSF ADG of West Bengal told me that Amir Sheikh is now in BSF control. They will inform the family today about the development.' 'Earlier I had spoken to the home secretary and BSF DG over the issue. I hope such an incident never takes place in the country. Indian citizens and travel throughout the country. It is a fundamental right. It is sad that the person was arrested and deported. But today is a happy day that he has been brought back to India,' added Choudhury in his message. Samirul Islam, TMC Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of the West Bengal Migrant Labour Welfare Board, said the family had been supported from the start. 'Amir Sk, a migrant worker from Malda's Kaliachak, was deported to Bangladesh by the Rajasthan police. Since his deportation, we have been with the family from day one, extending all kinds of support to them. We also helped his father move the Calcutta High Court with a habeas corpus petition. Following the petition, top Rajasthan government officials and those from the Centre were summoned by the hon'ble court. The case was scheduled to be heard tomorrow,' he said. 'As interestingly there was no way to repatriate Amir except through legal intervention, as he had been tagged under a case involving illegal entry into Bangladesh. Amid such a situation, the central government is now trying to repatriate Amir Sheikh to his Malda home to save face and avoid the legal blow for the illegal pushback,' Islam added. ' One has to do something so that this trend of pushing out our Bengal residents to Bangladesh stops. There should be proper rehabilitation for such victims,' said Asif Faruk, state general secretary of the Parijayi Sramik Aikya Manch (Migrant Workers' Unity Forum). In the video last month, accessed by The Indian Express, Amir Sheikh is seen speaking to residents in Bangladesh. He identifies himself, shares his West Bengal address, and alleges that after being detained for two months, he was recently sent across the border into Bangladesh. The incident comes in the wake of similar cases across several states, including Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. On June 14, seven residents of West Bengal were detained in Mumbai and later pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF. After intervention by the West Bengal government, four youths from Murshidabad, one from Purba Bardhaman and a husband-wife duo from North 24 Parganas were brought back.

Trump, Vance To Meet Zelenskyy Virtually Before Alaska Summit With Putin: Report

The purpose of the dialogue is to address Ukraine's growing concerns about being side-lined in negotiations. US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15 to discuss the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The high-stakes summit will take place behind closed doors and will be limited to representatives from the US and Russia, raising significant concerns over Ukraine's exclusion from direct participation. Addressing criticism surrounding Kyiv's absence from the in-person discussions, the White House officials confirmed on Tuesday that President Trump will hold a virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prior to the summit, ABC News reported. The session is expected to take place on Wednesday. Sources familiar with the development said President Trump and Vice President JD Vance will join the virtual meeting, which will also include key European allies. The purpose of the dialogue is to address Ukraine's growing concerns about being sidelined in negotiations that could shape the outcome of the war and affect its territorial sovereignty. Recently, President Zelenskyy has issued repeated warnings that 'talks about us, without us, will not work." He has also rejected any possibility of agreeing to territorial concessions, especially the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the contested Donbas region in the east. The Donbas region, comprising Luhansk and Donetsk, has been a focal point of the war since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Moscow has since claimed both regions as part of its territory. Zelenskyy also expressed frustration with the Alaska summit, calling the direct Trump-Putin meeting a 'personal victory" for the Russian leader. Although the White House has framed the summit as a 'listening exercise" for President Trump, Ukrainian officials fear their interests may be compromised in backchannel talks. Still, Zelenskyy struck a hopeful tone, revealing that during a recent call with US envoy Steve Witkoff, he received a subtle indication that Russia may be open to negotiating a ceasefire. 'This was the first signal from them," he noted. Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from geopolitics to diplomacy and global trends.
