New T-Mobile commercial praising Verizon will help T-Mobile in the end

Over 20 years ago, when the time came for me to pick a wireless provider, I wanted the carrier that had the best coverage and was the most reliable. Back then, the choice was easy. Verizon was more expensive than the rest, but you would get what you paid for. With two children, I wanted to make sure that I'd be able to get in touch with them whenever I called. In 2005, Verizon had the best wireless network in the U.S.
The T-Mobile of 2005 had absolutely no resemblance to the T-Mobile of today. Led by the EDGE platform, dubbed 2.5G, it would be another three years before T-Mobile customers would get to experience the huge speed increase and improvement in features available with 3G service. The man who would be considered T-Mobile 's savior when he became president and CEO of the company 10 years later, John Legere, was in the process of turning around Global Crossing. The latter is a multinational telecommunications company that was coming out of bankruptcy. T-Mobile 's advertising campaign back in 2005 did not call T-Mobile the "un-Carrier as that name would debut under Legere. The carrier did focus its advertising on teens due to the success of T-Mobile 's Sidekick device. The Sidekick II was released in 2004, and in 2006 the Sidekick 3 was launched. The device had a swiveling screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and integrated instant messaging and email capabilities. As a messaging device, the Sidekick was a huge hit.
On the opposite side of the spectrum was Verizon , whose network was considered the most reliable with the fewest dropped calls. However, Verizon 's plans were more expensive than T-Mobile 's. Back in 2005, if you wanted to have your phone connected to the most reliable cell service, you signed up with Verizon and paid more for that reliability. Verizon was considered to have the best wireless service in the U.S., a title it owned for many years.
Legere was named president and CEO of T-Mobile in September 2012 and he immediately helped to turn around T-Mobile with his splashy, pro-consumer un-Carrier announcements. The first one, announced in 2013, got rid of subsidized phones and two-year contracts. In 2016, T-Mobile announced the T-Mobile Tuesdays customer reward program, which has been a huge hit with customers. Another un-Carrier perk gave subscribers free Netflix streaming. Legere's brash comments knocking the competition also caught the attention of young consumers who were soon moving to T-Mobile in droves. By August 2020, T-Mobile , at one time dead last among the four major U.S. carriers, was number two behind only Verizon.
T-Mobile was the first to recognize the importance of having mid-band spectrum for 5G use. | Image credit-T-Mobile A poor decision made by AT&T and Verizon and a brilliant one made by T-Mobile turned around the U.S. wireless market. Verizon and AT&T decided to start building out their 5G networks with millimeter wave spectrum (mmWave), the airwaves that deliver the fastest download data speeds. But what Verizon and AT&T didn't take into account is that mmWave airwaves only travel short distances. This could prolong the time and expense of building out their 5G networks.
T-Mobile had a different plan and that was to use mid-band spectrum to build its 5G network. While mid-band 5G isn't as fast as mmWave, it is still much faster than the low-band 5G used for nationwide 5G networks. While mid-band spectrum may not travel as far as low-band, it travels longer distances than mmWave. As a result, T-Mobile decided to build out its 5G network using mid-band spectrum which became known as the Goldilocks of 5G.
It just so happened that there was a place where T-Mobile could buy a ton of 2.5GHz mid-band spectrum, perfect for 5G. It didn't come cheap, and it wasn't easy. But when T-Mobile purchased Sprint for $26.1 billion, the transaction included a large amount of 2.5GHz spectrum that T-Mobile used to build out its 5G network.
Officially named by Speedtest as the best network in America, it was time for T-Mobile to let the public know that Verizon no longer owned that title. T-Mobile recently ran a television commercial that starts by acknowledging the past and promoting the current. "For years, everyone thought Verizon had the best network. Because they did," starts the ad. But the commercial points out that according to "some fancy experts, that title now belongs to T-Mobile ." Current T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert recently made it clear during a recent earnings call that T-Mobile is going after Verizon subscribers. If those who signed up with Verizon because it had the best network in America at one time start switching to T-Mobile because it now has the best network in the U.S., it might not be much longer before T-Mobile does something that seemed impossible years ago, which is to surpass Verizon and become the nation's top wireless carrier.

They are also protected by a 5-year price guarantee, meaning prices will stay the same for at least five years. The plans start at $50 per month with the AutoPay discount enabled. With a voice line, the price dips to just $35 per month. Previously, 24/7 tech support was only extended to All-in customers, but now it's included with Amplified plans as should give Amplified customers peace of mind, as they will now have around-the-clock access to live support for help with their smart devices. Customers are now protected by Advanced Cyber Security and will be shielded from malicious websites and alerted about suspicious activity. Their connected devices will be guarded from online threats. T-Mobile reminds users that all of these can be managed using the T-Mobile app. T-Mobile 5G Internet is great for areas where other options aren't available and for those who don't want to pay more for wired connections. The company is now the fifth-largest internet service provider and aims to reach 12 million FWA customers by 2028. T-Mobile said during the Q2 earnings calls that the satisfaction rate of 5G internet is "through the roof" and people are "pretty surprised and delighted at the performance."

T-Mobile has fallen: the 'un-carrier' has made a number of decisions recently which have left consumers angry. Somehow, Verizon has managed to one-up T-Mobile, and in doing so has made its biggest rival an even more compelling option for Americans. Verizon 's CEO — Hans Vestberg — made some remarks recently which alienated a lot of the user base, and T-Mobile , it seems, was just waiting to swoop in. There are now two ways that the un-carrier can snatch customers away from Verizon , and both of them are due to the latter's own poor decisions. Some people report seeing completely empty Verizon stores. | Image credit — Verizon The aforementioned remarks by CEO Hans Vestberg made it clear that the company will no longer focus on its dwindling subscriber count. Verizon , according to a report, only wants 'high-quality' customers, and will not sacrifice profitability by offering discounts and other goodies any longer. Customers received an email from Verizon, letting them know that their loyalty discounts were no longer valid. In my opinion, Verizon gave up the only reason many people stuck around, and its already decreasing number of customers is about to plummet off of a cliff. The company seems to have realized that as well, and may be back-pedaling in order to retain at least some number of customers. But the damage has been done: many users have lost the discounts that were keeping them tied to the carrier, and T-Mobile will welcome them with open arms. Of course, AT&T is also an option, but T-Mobile 's reputation is currently the best amongst the top three. And this is only one way that Verizon is practically throwing customers at the un-carrier. The un-carrier is trying out Verizon's retention strategy. | Image credit — The New York Times While it's unclear how long this has been a thing, apparently T-Mobile is offering discounts the exact same way Verizon used to. It was a neat little trick that Verizon customers used to employ: Call customer support Ask to leave Get a discount Verizon was clearly desperate for customer retention, and offered its users massive discounts if they hinted at wanting to leave. Now that the company has declared that it only wants 'high-quality' customers, T-Mobile has rolled out a 'loyalty team' instead. If you call customer service and tell them that you want to switch carriers, they will begin to explain to you why your T-Mobile plan is amazing value that you shouldn't give up. But the fun part comes after, when you continue to push and keep insisting on leaving. This 'loyalty team' will try to make you a deal. If that isn't good enough, and you still say that you want to leave, the team will then make you an even better offer. Naturally, much like Verizon 's customers, T-Mobile users will be heavily incentivized to remain with the carrier for lowered only has Verizon practically thrown away its customers at T-Mobile , it's also taught the latter how to keep them from leaving the same way they left their last carrier. Because I think that the choice is very clear. Unless T-Mobile 's coverage in your area is particularly bad, the un-carrier has so many advantages over Verizon now. I've seen countless people say that the only reason they were with Verizon was because of the discounts. If the company is now actively antagonizing these people, taking away said discounts, and giving them no reason to stay, then why would they? T-Mobile may have made some pretty bad decisions as of late, but at least it still offers discounts and extras like T-Mobile Tuesdays deals. Most importantly of all, in my opinion, the un-carrier hasn't begun to distinguish between 'high-quality' customers and the rest of us common folk.

Are you excited about next year's Galaxy S26 , S26 Plus, and S26 Ultra yet? Not so fast, as the world's top smartphone vendor is widely expected to restructure its main high-end handset family all of a sudden, surprisingly rebranding one of those three aforementioned models and essentially eliminating a second one. These pretty major changes have been making the rumor rounds for a while now, but although nothing is confirmed until, well, Samsung confirms it, it's hard to doubt the veracity of the company's "reorganization" plans after a new report (translated here) from one of the most reputable media outlets in South Korea. That's definitely a possibility if Samsung is indeed thinking of basically following up two members of this year's Galaxy S25 quartet with one Galaxy S26 Edge device. Samsung must be pleased with the Galaxy S25 Edge sales numbers, right? | Image Credit -- PhoneArena While the S25 Edge was reportedly not selling very well shortly after its commercial debut, things may have picked up in the meantime, bolstered among others by heftier and heftier discounts in key markets like the US. The super-slim Snapdragon 8 Elite powerhouse, of course, was always intended as an experimental product of sorts designed to test the waters for a possible reshuffling of the Galaxy S lineup. However many Galaxy S25 Edge units it managed to sell, Samsung evidently deemed the number as satisfactory, planning to vastly increase production for the S26 Edge. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy S26 Edge is tipped to come out at the same time as the "basic" and "ultra" members of the S26 family, which should clearly boost the appeal of next year's crazy thin smartphone with a potentially remarkably hefty battery under the hood. Naturally, Samsung's hope is that the no-longer-experimental Edge will outperform the Galaxy S25 Plus at the global box-office. Plus models have long lagged behind their siblings in sales numbers, but according to some estimates, the "vanilla" 6.2-inch Galaxy S25 hasn't been a lot more successful than the 6.7-inch variant, with the two accounting for 26 and 22 percent of the family's South Korean pre-orders, for instance. That, my dear friends and readers, remains a question no one is able to answer with a very high degree of confidence. ET News doesn't mention the Galaxy S26 Pro by that name today, nor does it hint at any upgrades worthy of such a major rebranding effort for the base Galaxy S26 model. Consequently, you should probably not rule out the Galaxy S26 actually being called that when the ultra-high-end handset trio sees daylight in early 2026. Another possibility is that the S26 Pro is an entirely different version of Samsung's "next big thing", although today's report clearly calls for the Galaxy S26 family to be "reorganized" into three and not four models. The Galaxy S25 Plus could mark the end of an era for Samsung and the beginning of a hopefully exciting new one. | Image Credit -- PhoneArena For my part, I remain far more excited about the Galaxy S26 Edge than the S26 Ultra , but of course, that doesn't necessarily mean Samsung's flagship family restructuring and the canning of the S26 Plus will prove to be the wisest business decision.
