Ben Affleck praised by fans after refusing to buy son, 13, $6,000 shoes

Ben Affleck has been met with huge praise after unpacking a viral video where he turned down his son's request for expensive trainers.
Last month, a clip emerged of the Batman actor and his youngest son, Samuel – who he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner – attending a sneaker convention, when the teenager eyed up a pair of Dior Air Force 1s with an eyewatering price tag.
Having absolutely none of it, the 52-year-old joked that the youngster had to 'mow a lot of lawns' to earn the $6,000 asking price.
Shedding light on the clip, during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends, he explained: 'He wanted these sneakers, and I was like, 'These sneakers are $6,000, what are you talking about? What are you going to do, mow lawns? You got $6,000?'
'He was like, 'We have the money.' I was like, 'I have the money! You're broke!'
'You love your kids, you want to give them everything and do everything for them, but I think you definitely do them a disservice by not connecting [that if] you want something that you want, you have to work for that.'
When Andy Cohen, who was guest-hosting the series, asked if Ben's children with Jennifer – including Violet, 19, and Seraphina, 16, – have jobs, the multi-millionaire actor confirmed that his eldest kids are working.
'Yeah, my oldest two have jobs. In fact, one just got a job, the classic teenager working a shop job – I won't say what it is…,' he added. 'My older one in college is working and trying to get an internship for the summer.
'My son, who's 13, he's reckoning with that reality right now. He's looking at no shoes in his closet. Well, he's got shoes, just no crazy expensive fancy shoes. And I'm like, 'Well, if you want that, you can work 1,000 hours.'
'Once you work 1,000 hours, you may not want to spend that on a pair of sneakers.'

Viewers watching on from home flocked to applaud Ben's comments, praising the Accountant 2 star and Hollywood icon Jennifer for their stance and making sure their kids remain grounded despite their huge fame.
'It's nice to see a celebrity doing good parenting,' Reddit user Casual_CryBabyy wrote.
Snarkerella agreed: 'He's not wrong. Clearly, he's buying his children (who are still minors) what they need like clothing, school supplies, etc.
'He's just not going to indulge in some ridiculous $6k pair of shoes. NO kid needs that. They'd be destroyed in days and only makes them think they can have whatever, whenever. Good on Ben and Jen!'
Fans praised his comments on social media (Picture: Getty)
'Great POV,' Archetyping101 wrote. 'My parents are pretty comfortable and I scrubbed toilets and cleaned a pool facility bathrooms for money in high school. It's THEIR money, not mine. Mine is what I make.'
Palomatoma added: 'I think when you have the type of wealth that he has, this is probably the best approach.
'His kids can basically get anything they want before they're even 18. It's not like he's kicking him out the house and being like 'figure it out!' just 'I'm not buying you shoes that cost 6k.''
Ben and Jennifer split in 2015 after 10 years of marriage (Picture: Getty)
Ben and Jennifer first started dating in 2004, after sharing the screen in Pearl Harbor and Daredevil – they went on to tie the knot in Turks and Caicos the following year.
They welcomed three children together before announcing their split in 2015, with their divorce finalized in 2018.
Despite the separation, they have remained close for the sake of their brood, and have regularly spoken highly of one another in public.
'They really do have a close bond,' a source told Page Six, adding that they 'know not all exes get along as well and they feel very grateful that they have such an amazing relationship.'

Iconic author reveals shock at horror legend pal Stephen King's surprise Scottish football connection
The author is back in Scotland this week to launch the Stirling-based literary bash HORROR icon Stephen King left author pal Linwood Barclay stunned when he arrived for a chat wearing a Buckie Thistle strip. The two bestselling writers have been mates for decades but The Shining and Carrie legend's support for the Highland League minnows was a twist Linwood just did not see coming. Advertisement 2 Linwood is coming to Scotland and excited to meet his fans Credit: Getty 2 Stephen King is a supporter of Highland League side Buckie Thistle King, who has sold more than 350million books, struck up a friendship with the Moray club after he featured them in his 2020 bestseller If It Bleeds. And the 77-year-old proudly sported the green and white merch when doing a video conference with Linwood for the Bloody Scotland crime writing festival during lockdown. Linwood - who is back in Scotland this week to launch the Stirling-based literary bash - said: 'I did that Zoom call with Steve for Bloody Scotland four years ago and that was the sweater he wore. 'I remember because I thought, 'what the heck is that?' as I had no idea of his football connection.' Advertisement Now after writing over 25 best selling crime books the former journalist will follow in his famous pal's footsteps with the release of his first horror novel called Whistle. It features a children's author called Annie Blunt who moves to a small town in upstate New York with her young son Charlie for a new start after the tragic death of husband. But when Charlie finds a forgotten train set in a locked shed in the grounds of their new house it sets in motion a disturbing set of events. However, Toronto-based Linwood insists he wasn't nervous even when he sent his first draft to the undisputed king of genre. Advertisement He says: 'I wasn't intimidated by that. I think the fact is that if you had told me 30 years ago when I was reading Steve's novels that I would even know his email address, never mind emailing each other, then I wouldn't have believed it. 'But Steve is very supportive and encouraging. I feel very privileged and lucky to have the friendship I have with him.' Trailer for Stephen King's 'excessively violent' new movie BANNED by four TV networks However, far from talking about the grim and grisly, the pair normally swap Netflix recommendations. Linwood, 70, says: 'Every once in a while I get an email and it's like, 'are you watching this show, such and such?'. Advertisement 'I sent him a note last week saying 'If you've not watched it yet you should try Mobland (with Pierce Brosnan and Tom Hardy)'. I really hope they make a second season of it.' He adds: 'But it really is very troubling in the sense that I remember being at a book event a few years ago where all of the writers were sitting around saying 'are you watching this show?'. Nobody was saying, 'have you read this book?'. 'It just sort of hit us that the competition is not other writers, it's these TV shows where you can binge all this material at once. 'So I feel like you've got to write something that will make people stop streaming TV at least for a little while.' Advertisement Fans of Linwood's books, including The Accident, Elevator Pitch and Find You First, praise his explosive scenes. But the writer believes that is down to his love of 60s TV shows including The Man From U.N.C.L.E starring Scots actor David McCallum as Russian spy Illya Kuryakin. He says: 'That was my favourite show and from the age of 11, anything I wrote I was thinking of it like it was on a screen.' But the married dad could only dream of being a bestselling author when he grew up on his parents trailer park in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario. Advertisement In the early 70s when he was 16, Linwood ended up running the place following the sudden death of his father. He recalls: 'My mum managed it, but I did like, 90 per cent of the work. Including the daily task of burying fish guts, from the fisherman who had gutted their catch. 'I had to haul it out into the woods and bury it. So on days when the writing doesn't go well, I always think it could be worse. I could still be burying fish guts.' Linwood left the trailer park to begin a long career in newspapers until the publication of his first novel No Time for Goodbye in 2007 - which became an instant international bestseller. But now with his first horror novel he's hoping to emulate pal Stephen. The model train enthusiast says: 'My book starts off with a train set because it just doesn't seem fair to me that in the horror genre, when it comes to toys, it's always dolls that get to be evil or maybe a little mechanical monkey or a rocking horse. Advertisement 'So I thought, 'I wonder if I could make toy trains scary?'. I want this book to be able to do for toy trains what Chucky did for dolls and or what Stephen King did for clowns.' Whistle by Linwood Barclay is out now in hardback priced £20 and in audio and ebook from HarperCollins. For more info on the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival, visit the website.

Netflix users threaten to cancel subscription after 'diabolical' new update leaves them fuming
Netflix has been globally rolling out a new interface on the platform which unimpressed viewers have described as a "big step backwards". Netflix subscribers have been left unimpressed by a fresh update on the platform's user interface. The streaming giant has started introducing subscribers to an updated app from May 19, vowing to bring "better recommendations and an improved interface that highlights what matters most to you", with high hopes pinned on this latest revamp. The update features a sleek, contemporary design and boasts features like tailored suggestions and enhanced shortcuts to much-loved shows. However, it seems that Netflix, who has around 300m users, has left some of their fans frustrated by their new home page model with some even threatening to ditch their subscription in protest. One subscriber fumed as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to write: "Netflix's update is diabolical where the hell is the coming soon section!!" Another equally irritated user chimed in: "Whoever's job it was to update Netflix UI, I'm praying for a resignation in the coming weeks. IT LOOKS TERRIBLE." Adding to the chorus of dissatisfaction, someone else remarked "[...] the NEW Netflix Update has somehow made the UI like 10000x worse, the Express reports. "It hurts my brain when I try and search new shows etc. Am I overreacting or do others not like the new UI?" Other members have also taken to Reddit to vent their frustrations. One disgruntled user penned: "It's awful. My TV updated to it automatically this week after putting off the update for ages, now it's a load of rubbish. Will be cancelling [my] subscription." A second agreed: "It's soo dire. You can't find anything. "It was so slick and easy to use before. Now it's soo clunky. I'm always willing to try new ideas, but this is a big step backwards." A third person went as far to say: "Thinking I might actually now cancel my subscription." Amid the rising backlash against the new design, a number of subscribers have rallied on to petition that Netflix reverts to its previous interface. The description outlines the grievance: "The new layout only allows users to see a sparse selection of 3 or 4 titles per screen, compared to the previously user-friendly layout of 20 or more titles. "This change not only limits variety and accessibility but also diminishes the ease-of-use Netflix was renowned for." Netflix's chief product officer, Eunice Kim, backed the revised design in May, saying: "We wanted to create an experience that was more flexible for our broad entertainment offerings, more intuitive and responsive to our members' needs, and capable of elevating the most thrilling moments on Netflix. Despite the negative feedback, other users on Reddit have pointed out that Netflix still excels compared to many other streaming platforms. However, subscribers may now need to delve deeper into data about their preferred series, encompassing everything from synopses and runtimes, to prominent awards recognition, performance metrics in Netflix's Top 10, and details on principal cast members. The streaming giant continues to assure that searching by genre and theme remains a trusty option, and reminds viewers that a welcome message will guide them through the changes upon logging in.
