Pro-Net teams up with four charge point operators to expand EV charging access for apartment and condo residents

Malay Mail07-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Staying in high-rise residential buildings shouldn't be a barrier to own an EV. More condominium and apartment residents can enjoy convenient and cheaper access to EV charging as Pro-Net has signed a collaboration agreement with four top Charge Point Operators (CPO) in the country.
With its collaboration with Charge+, ChargeSini, RExharge and Charge N Go, Pro-Net aims to strengthen the national EV ecosystem and to support the increasing number of Proton e.MAS and smart owners.
Pro-Net provides e.MAS and Smart owners access to 1,053 EV charge points at condominiums and apartments
At the moment, Proton e.MAS and Smart customers can conveniently charge their EVs at 320 condominiums and apartments nationwide, and this includes its existing partnership with EV Connection (EVC) in December 2024. In total, Pro-Net now lists a total of 1,053 charging points at high-rise residential buildings across Malaysia.
Pro-Net added that these initiatives contribute to Malaysia's 90 per cent coverage milestone for public charging needs, which compliments the current network of 2,500 public charging points nationwide.
In addition, Pro-Net aims to make EV ownership easier and more affordable by working directly with the four CPOs to install chargers at residential condominiums and apartments.
Singapore-based Charge+ is installing chargers at 18 condominium locations while Time's Charge N Go is installing chargers at 93 condominium locations.
Meanwhile, ChargeSini is the largest player by coverage with over 1,010 charge points nationwide and it is expanding its charger installation to cover 204 condominium locations. RExharge is also supporting the partnership with charging solutions backed by more than 1,000 residential projects and more than 100 EV chargers, and they will be installing chargers at 5 condominium locations.
As the public charging network continues to grow, home EV charging is still the cheapest option but it is often limited to residents of landed property. The initiative aims to provide Proton e.MAS and Smart owners access to charge at their condo at lower rates than typical public chargers, with the aim of reducing the cost of owning an EV.
Special rate for Proton e.MAS and Smart Owners
To celebrate the collaboration, Pro-Net is offering a limited-time promo where Proton e.MAS and Smart owners can enjoy discounted rate for EV charging at participating condominium charging points provided by each CPO. Each partner CPO will offer customised promotional pricing from RM0.75 per kWh as listed below:
Charge+ – AC Charging from RM0.75/kWh
ChargeSini – AC Charging from RM0.84/kWh, DC Charging from RM1.11/kWh
RExharge – AC Charging from RM0.75/kWh, DC Charging from RM0.99/kWh
Charge N Go – AC Charging from RM0.75/kWh
To enjoy these rates, you'll need to activate and pay for EV charging via the Proton e.MAS app which has built-in EV charging integration with live map for each CPO's charging platform. With this offer, Pro-Net says EV users can expect monthly savings of up to RM200, compared to public charging. — SoyaCincau

Proton posts strong sales growth in May

PROTON Holdings Bhd recorded a robust performance in May 2025, with total sales, including domestic, export, smart, and Proton vehicles, reaching 13,328 units. This figure represents a 6.1% increase compared to May 2024, and marks the third consecutive month of sales growth for the national carmaker. Between March and May, Proton experienced a year-on-year growth of 10%, pushing year-to-date (YTD) sales to 61,087 units. Market share for the month is projected at 19.2%, with the same percentage forecasted for the YTD share, based on an estimated Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 69,495 units. Key contributors to this upward trajectory included the Proton X50 and X70, both of which have sustained strong demand following the launch of their updated variants last year. Export sales surged by 36.6% over 2024 figures, while Proton's flagship electric vehicle, the 7, continued to lead EV sales in Malaysia for a fifth straight month, achieving a new milestone by surpassing 900 units sold in May. Across Proton's model range, May emerged as the second-best sales month in 2025, bolstered by nationwide promotional campaigns that stimulated consumer interest. The Proton X70 recorded the highest growth rate among individual models, with sales increasing by 44% to 982 units. This placed the C-segment SUV 53.1% ahead of its YTD sales from the previous year, a trend Proton expects to sustain throughout the remainder of 2025. The Proton X50 also maintained its dominant position in the B-segment SUV category, contributing 2,198 units to the monthly total and pushing its YTD tally to 9,704 units—a 14.3% rise over 2024. Meanwhile, the premium D-segment Proton X90 expanded its market footprint with a 15.5% increase in sales to 224 units. Sedan models also enjoyed a steady rise in demand. The Proton Saga, the company's A-segment offering, registered 5,513 units, reflecting a 5.8% improvement over April. The B-segment Persona followed suit with 1,385 units sold, a 4.3% month-on-month increase. The C-segment Proton S70, a recent addition to the lineup, posted a modest gain of 2.7% to close at 1,763 units. Meanwhile, the Proton Iriz recorded a 14.1% increase in May, reaching 331 units and retaining its status as Malaysia's fourth most popular B-segment hatchback. Proton's EV sales continued to gain momentum, with the 7 hitting a record high of 916 units across domestic and international markets in May. This achievement pushed its YTD total to 3,632 units, reinforcing its position as the country's top-selling electric SUV in the premium C-segment category. Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong attributed the positive sales momentum to targeted promotional activities and the appeal of the company's technologically advanced product range. He emphasised the strength of Proton's retail network, comprising 3S and 4S centres, as instrumental in enhancing customer experience and driving conversions. Looking ahead, Dr Li expressed confidence that Proton would maintain its momentum into the second half of 2025, with several new model launches and events lined up under the next phase of the company's business strategy. With the Malaysian car market approaching saturation, Proton has increasingly focused on expanding its international footprint. In 2025, the company launched several overseas initiatives, including the introduction of the CKD Proton Saga in left-hand-drive configuration for Egypt and EV-centred events featuring the 7 in Nepal and Singapore. June will see the company's electric SUV enter the Trinidad and Tobago market, marking its second export destination for the EV after Nepal. To date, 233 units of the 7 have been exported, a number that is expected to climb with the latest market entry. Leading Proton's export sales is the Saga, with 710 units, followed closely by the X50, which posted a staggering 360% increase in YTD exports, reaching 694 units. Proton's renewed export strategy is showing early success, with sales volumes already on the rise. Dr Li stated that while short-term gains are promising, the company remains committed to a long-term plan for overseas market development. He noted that achieving sustainable success in international markets demands consistent effort and structured planning, both of which Proton is prepared to deliver.

How a Hong Kong startup is going about recycling lithium batteries

A Hong Kong lithium battery recycling start-up is eyeing opportunities at home and in Southeast Asia amid overcapacity and intense competition for recyclable materials in mainland China. Hong Kong Science and Technology Park-based Achelous Pure Metals currently has a capacity to process 150 tonnes of used non-electric vehicle (EV) batteries a year. It has set up its operations in an industrial building in Tuen Mun in the New Territories, which is pending approval from the Environmental Protection Department. The company crushes the batteries into a so-called black mass – a powdery mixture of valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, copper, manganese and nickel – which is then refined into lithium carbonate, cobalt and nickel compounds. 'Our goal is to tackle the growing problem of discarded lithium-ion batteries by bringing scalable, movable, eco-friendly recycling to urban centres starting in Hong Kong, with plans to expand to [Southeast] Asia,' said Alan Wong Yuk-chun, the co-founder and technical director. He said that as the city lacked recycling facilities, small-scale recycling of non-EV batteries could be done in Hong Kong and showcased for overseas business development. Most spent EV batteries were collected and exported, he added. Between two and three tonnes of lithium batteries a day were collected from discarded electrical appliances and power banks in Hong Kong, he said. Achelous has built a pilot version of a robot-assisted system to sort, shred and sift materials derived from the batteries. The system, which is pending a patent, uses a combination of vacuum and heat treatment to evaporate and capture harmful materials and gases like epoxy adhesives and fluorine. The five-year-old start-up has built another pilot project that combines nanoparticles suspended in water or organic solvents that separates molecules based on their charge, to extract and refine valuable metals from the black mass. While Achelous has already deployed its technology at a client's recycling plant in east China's Jiangsu province, which is capable of processing 10,000 tonnes a year, it faces challenges in growing its business due to rampant growth in recycling capacity on the mainland in recent years. 'Our client's factory has to compete for black mass at higher and higher prices, while the prices of end-products like lithium carbonate keep falling amid oversupply,' said Shawn Cheng, Achelous' co-founder and research and development director. The price of battery-grade lithium carbonate, sometimes referred to as 'white gold', plunged nearly 90% to 60,600 yuan (US$7,725) a tonne in May, from 568,000 yuan in November 2022, according to Daiwa Capital Markets. Amid recycling overcapacity in China and US-China trade tensions that threaten to slow demand for lithium batteries, lithium oversupply may peak globally in 2027 before seeing a deficit in the early 2030s, according to a forecast by UK-based commodities consultancy Wood Mackenzie last month. Instead of swimming against the tide, Achelous changed its strategy, setting up a production line in Hong Kong while also seeking to help companies in Southeast Asia build 'micro-factories' to break down lithium batteries and produce black mass to export to its clients in China. The company is in talks with prospective partners to recycle spent lithium batteries from handheld transceivers used by the security industry in Hong Kong, and from discarded electronics in Malaysia and Singapore. 'We want to help [our] partners meet their future recycled content obligations and set up a system to keep track of the materials' footprint for compliance,' Cheng said. Globally, demand for recycled battery materials has been mostly driven by regulations implemented in 2023 by the European Union. The battery and recycling industry is working towards a 50% target for lithium recovery by 2027, rising to 80% by 2031. For cobalt, copper, lead and nickel, the target is 90% by 2027 and 95% by 2031. – South China Morning Post

BYD's misfire with price cuts sparks US$20bil stock selloff

Hong Kong-listed shares of BYD have dropped 11% from their recent record high. (EPA Images pic) SHENZHEN : A renewed EV price war launched by BYD Co has shaved US$20 billion off its market value in just two weeks, as scepticism over the top Chinese automaker's strategy takes some steam out of its big rally. Concerns are growing over BYD's ability to meet its sales target of 5.5 million vehicles this year, with its latest features drawing lukewarm consumer response in China's sluggish economy. Rivals including Xpeng Inc and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co have gained market share, and their stocks have outperformed. Hong Kong-listed shares of BYD have dropped 11% from their recent record high as investors worry about competition denting its profits. The stock has become more expensive, losing some of its valuation appeal, and short interest has crept back up to around a three-month high. 'The recent correction in BYD's share price reflects a combination of margin pressure concerns and weakened sentiment across the EV sector,' said Andy Wong, investment director for Asia Pacific at Solomons Group in Sydney. 'Aggressive pricing alone no longer guarantees a strong sales lift, particularly in a more mature and competitive EV market.' BYD slashed prices in China by as much as 34% last month, the latest round of deep discounts in a battle now stretching into its third year. Sales have slowed overall and new entrants like Xiaomi Corp and Huawei Technologies Co have dialled up the competition. The industry is even drawing scrutiny from the government, which summoned the heads of major EV makers including BYD earlier this week and told them they shouldn't sell cars below cost or at unreasonable discounts. Even with its lowered price tags, BYD has achieved just 32% of its 2025 sales target as of the end of May. It scored limited success with its attempt to lure consumers by offering its God's Eye driver-assistance system at no extra cost for some models. Meanwhile the likes of Xpeng, Leapmotor and Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd are winning mass-market customers with more compelling features as well as low prices. Geely's electric Xingyuan hatchback and Xingyue L sport utility vehicle are among the best-selling vehicles in China, while Leapmotor's May deliveries more than doubled the year-ago level. The price wars will likely result in industry consolidation much like the last round, though it will be more difficult 'as surviving players now have scale, balance sheet strength and competitive products', according to Bing Yuan, a fund manager at Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management. 'Things will likely get worse before getting better. That said, BYD could still come out ahead.' Hong Kong-listed shares of the company are still up 54% this year, though that trails gains of around 70% for Leapmotor and Xpeng. BYD is now trading at 19 times forward earnings estimates, up from 14 times earlier this year. Exports have been a bright spot, with BYD notching record overseas deliveries so far this year, allowing the company more cushion as it competes at home. But Edmond de Rothschild's Yuan notes it also implies 'domestic sales are under even heavier pressure than the market anticipated, especially heading into a traditionally softer Q2'. Bearish bets on BYD have risen, with short interest at 4.4% of free float, compared with a low of 0.3% earlier this year, according to S&P Global data. Sell-side analysts are still overwhelmingly positive, however, with some noting that the big discounts are a necessary evil. 'We see the recent price cut promotion more as a near-term marketing scheme in order to drive foot traffic during a period of low sales seasonality,' said Eugene Hsiao, head of China equity strategy at Macquarie Capital. 'We believe BYD is fully aware that price cuts are not a sustainable strategy for long-term growth.'
