Eddie Howe bursts out laughing over Celtic claim as Newcastle boss sees funny side of pasting
Boss Eddie Howe couldn't help but laugh as he insisted Newcastle United put in a good performance against Celtic - minus the four goals they conceded.
Brendan Rodgers saw his side thump the Premier League side thanks to Arne Engels penalty and goals from Johnny Kenny, Yang and Liam Scales.
But after the full-time whistle, the Newcastle boss attempted to search for the positives from a lacklustre afternoon for his Champions League-bound side at Celtic Park.
He said: "We take a load from that. That was a really good test for us. I think the pre-season is designed to really test us.
"We know we've got a very challenging season ahead with all the competitions that we are in.
"This was a test that, maybe, came a little bit too early for us. We have had a long week in Austria, not making excuses by the way, but the lads came into the game jaded, slightly, but it was a great workout for us.
"I think Celtic played very well. I thought we played well in phases of the game. I thought we created a lot of chances and should have scored a couple of goals. Overall, I think we will be better for the game.
Pressed on if the difference in the club stage of pre-season showed - with Newcastle's trip to Glasgow only their second friendly clash- Howe continued: "Yeah, it did, naturally.
"I think they are way ahead of us, fitness wise. I think that's a really useful lesson for us to learn because we usually do that to other teams.
"The power of our fitness usually shows through in our performances. Today, it was the other way around.
"You could tell we were on the receiving end a little bit. We were reactive rather than proactive and that cost us. I think the goals we conceded, naturally, were the poorest aspects of our performance, because other than that..."
Howe then laughed: "Other than four goals.....it wasn't a game when we were consistently under pressure. We more than held our own. We obviously just defended those moments poorly."

'Excellent transfer window' but 'no way are they ready' - fans on season to come
We asked for your views on whether Burnley are ready for the new season after the Clarets completed their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Lazio at Turf Moor on are some of your comments:Fraser: Absolutely. Quietly gone about our transfer business, strengthening without seriously expensive headline acquisitions and still a couple to come. Parker will prove to be far more pragmatic than Kompany was last time round. Extremely difficult to buck the trend of revolving door back to the Championship but I believe we have a good Burnley had some nice touches and played OK against Lazio, but there is a huge CJ Egan-Riley shaped hole at the back, which I'm not sure the current squad can fill. Only time will tell if lack of goals has been Very astute and excellent transfer window for the Clarets with a good blend of talent, Premier League experience, youth and good business regarding Walker and Trafford especially. Burnley are in a lot better state of preparedness than the last Premier League Ready as they'll ever be. Bit of a forlorn hope, but they'll surely give it a better go than two years No way are they ready. The tactics against Lazio proved it. The goal wouldn't have happened with a back four, and the signings of last week won't have had a game with the team. Lots of new signings didn't work two years ago, and it wont this. Too many - it just doesn't work in the It's all about the start. A good start and the 36 points needed to survive seems possible. A bad start and the mountain looks We've brought in a good mix of talent and Premier League capability/experience. Given the disruption and/or personnel losses at other clubs, I feel confident we can push for the top of the bottom third. 14th position here we come!Shaun: Yet again we've bought a lot of players and are not giving last season's players much of a chance to prove themselves in the Premier League. Hopefully Broja can show how good a striker he is and score the goals that keeps us up!

Jack Grealish set for Everton medical ahead of loan move
Jack Grealish will have a medical at Everton today ahead of season's loan after a deal was agreed with Manchester City. Everton thrashed out an agreement with City to sign the England international over the weekend, and Grealish is expected to complete the formalities of the transfer in the next 24 hours. Grealish has pushed for the move as he targets a place in England's World Cup squad next year. As revealed by Telegraph Sport last week, Everton opened talks with City over a possible deal to sign the 29-year-old and a pay structure has been settled between the two clubs. It brings an end to a frustrating period for Grealish, at least temporarily, who has been frozen out by Pep Guardiola. Grealish won the Premier League three times since his club-record £100m move to City in 2021, as well as the Champions League, FA Cup and the Club World Cup, playing a key role in the side which won the treble in 2022-23. He did not fly out with City's squad for the Club World Cup last month and was left out of the matchday squad altogether for the final Premier League game of the season at Fulham in May. Guardiola only started Grealish in one Premier League game in 2025 and he was an unused substitute in the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace when City were trailing. 'I understand all the frustrations of all my players,' said Guardiola last May. 'It's so good to have a dream to play in the World Cup and the European Championship with his national team. I'd be concerned if it was otherwise.' Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, has expressed his admiration for Grealish since his appointment and this move to Everton will boost the attacking midfielder's chances of a recall. Everton have already signed Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, Adam Aznou and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Alcaraz this summer as David Moyes attempts to rebuild the squad since rejoining them last season after spending nine years at the club between 2002-2013. Everton kick off the new season away at Leeds United a week on Monday.

'Disaster written all over season' or 'cautiously optimistic'?
We asked for your views on whether Tottenham are ready for the new season as they prepare to face Paris St-Germain in the Super Cup on Wednesday and then kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Burnley on are some of your comments:Stephen: This season already has disaster written all over it. In general, we have the same players who threw Ange/Conte under the bus. Going into a season of Champions League and Premier League with only Richarlison up front and Solanke to come back, - neither of them exactly pull up trees - is criminal. The midfield is so lightweight it's unreal, and the defence is only one injury away from catastrophe. Positivity is flowing!James: I'd say so. With Thomas the Frank engine I think we could finish top seven, hopefully qualifying for Europe next For the first time in a long time, I'm worried about the team going forward. Son was on the wane, but losing an experienced forward, plus injuries to Maddison and Kulusevski, leave us looking woefully short of creativity, with a group of young or inconsistent wingers the current hope for this at present. Hoping for reinforcements - the money to be spent on Gibbs-White is still there so hopefully someone can be found. Not overly confident for the season at I am cautiously optimistic. Frank will adopt a more pragmatic style of play than Ange. We have good defensive individuals but they need to defend as a team. My main concern is who will be our It looks like all we are ready for is mid-table mediocrity. We have desperately needed more creative cut and thrust up front. With Maddison out, all we have now for quality up front is Kudus. We have not even tried to get Eze or Grealish. Why? They are players who make things happen in the last third, are still both available and both can play wide or as number 10s. If we don't go all out for one of these two, the Thomas Frank honeymoon will be over before the season even gets going. I feel sorry for the I was feeling pretty optimistic after the Arsenal and Newcastle games, but the Bayern Munich match has shattered that confidence. Frank really needed to land some ambitious signings early in the window to build momentum, but now it feels like no top player wants to join a team that only just scraped 17th in the league - and is now staring down Bayern-level opposition in the Champions League on a regular basis. Right now, our chances of winning anything next season feel close to zero unless we bring in at least three big signings. But who's actually coming? Morgan Gibbs-White thinks he's better off staying at Nottingham Forest. He might be right.
