L.A. County firefighters to receive Pat Tillman Award at ESPYs
Among them stood an Olympic gold medalist and a professional soccer champion.
L.A. County firefighters David Walters and Erin Regan, former athletes who were among the 7,500 emergency personnel who responded to the January wildfires in Southern California, earned them this year's Pat Tillman Award for Service that will be presented at the ESPY Awards.
The award — named after Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety who left the NFL to enlist in the Army following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was killed in action — celebrates those with deep ties to sports who have served others, embodying Tillman's legacy.
Years before joining the fire department, Walters helped the U.S. win the 4x200-meter freestyle relay gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games. He swam the lead leg in the preliminaries, helping the team set an Olympic record that paved the way for a world-record win in the final.
During the fires, Walters recounted the exhausting conditions as crews fought blazes that scorched nearly 38,000 acres — claiming the lives of 30 people and destroying homes, businesses and landmarks in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades.
'We're pretty much trying to keep what is left here standing,' Walters told NewNation. 'So we're not laying down. We're staying in our position — that's correct, I did sleep on top of the hose bed last night, just staying ready to do what we can still do.'
Walters told ESPN he is honored to serve Los Angeles.
'This has been a challenging year, but also a rewarding one as we watched the Los Angeles community come together to support their neighbors,' he said in ESPN's award announcement.
Regan, who joined the department in 2008, once anchored the Washington Freedom to a Women's United Soccer Association title following a stellar goalkeeping career at Wake Forest, where she earned first-team All-ACC honors and broke multiple school records.
Outside of firehouse duties, Regan champions female representation in the fire service. She co-founded Girls' Fire Camp, a one-day program introducing young girls to firefighting, and launched the Women's Fire Prep Academy, offering mentorship and hands-on training for aspiring female firefighters.
'My career choice was inspired by my family's history of public service, so receiving this award is a tribute to the many great influences that shaped my upbringing,' Regan said in ESPN's award announcement. 'As first responders, we take pride in hard work and serving others, and I'm truly humbled to be recognized alongside incredible heroes like Pat Tillman.'
The ESPYs, hosted by comedian Shane Gillis, will air on ABC and steam on ESPN+ on July 16 at 8 p.m. PDT.

Jarrett Stidham shines again as Broncos dominate Cardinals in 27-7 win
The Denver Broncos dominated the Arizona Cardinals with a 27-7 win in Week 2 of NFL preseason at Empower Field at Mile High on Saturday evening. The Broncos rested most starters, but coach Sean Payton made a few exceptions, including tight end Evan Engram. The veteran helped Denver march 97 yards on the team's opening drive with a 58-yard catch-and-run. After quarterback Jarrett Stidham then connected with rookie receiver Pat Bryant for 29 more yards, rookie running back RJ Harvey punched it in from eight yards out to give the Broncos an early 7-0 lead. Arizona matched that score with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended with quarterback Jacoby Brissett's 16-yard touchdown pass to receiver Simi Fehoko to tie the game at 7-7. Stidham later threw a touchdown pass of his own, connecting with receiver Troy Franklin on a 27-yard score to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead. After Denver's second score of the game, the Cardinals replaced Brissett with Clayton Tune at quarterback late in the first quarter. Stidham stayed in the game for the Broncos' third series and the offense drove down to the two-yard line and lined up to go for it on 4th-and-1 before offensive lineman Alex Palczewski was penalized for a false start. After the penalty backed the team up five yards, Denver settled for a 26-yard Wil Lutz field goal to make it 17-7. The highlight of that drive was a 35-yard run from running back Jaleel McLaughlin. Stidham ended up playing the entire first half and he connected with Franklin again late in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 24-7. After Lutz missed a 64-yard field goal attempt, the Broncos took a 17-point lead into halftime. Stidham finished his night 16-of-23 passing for 240 yards with two touchdowns. Lutz later converted a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the lead to 27-7. Sam Ehlinger took over at quarterback in the second half and he threw what would have been a touchdown pass to Caden Prieskorn late in the fourth quarter, but the tight end fumbled the ball and the Cardinals recovered it in the end zone for a touchback. It didn't take long for Denver to get the ball back and run out the clock, securing a 27-7 victory. On the injury front, backup offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo was carted off the field in the third quarter and was quickly ruled out with a knee injury. Gargiulo has been competing for a backup swing guard/center role. Outside linebacker Garrett Wilson also left in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Cardinals injury update: Rookie OL Hayden Conner has knee injury
Conner exited the game after only three plays. The Arizona Cardinals did not play well on Saturday in their second preseason game, losing to the Denver Broncos 27-7. However, excluding one injury, they seemed to come out of the game healthy. Only one player exited the game without being able to return — rookie offensive lineman Hayden Conner. Conner started the game at center but exited after the third play. It was a knee injury and he did not return. He was ruled out fairly quickly. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said they "would look at that tomorrow." He also noted that a pair of players had cramps but returned. Based on players who went down and then played later, cornerback Jaylon Jones and running back Zonovan Knight were those guys. Conner, who played guard all through college, has been getting a lot of work at center. He got the start there on Saturday because Jon Gaines, coming back from a thumb injury, "still can't snap." If Conner's injury is serious, it changes things for the offensive line and the active roster. Conner appears to be a player the Cardinals want to keep on the 53-man roster, but they probably won't have him be in their top eight linemen who would dress on game days.
