Minnesota Vikings get new name on defense in Field Yates' 2026 NFL Mock Draft

USA Today6 hours ago
The 2026 NFL Draft is months away, but the start of college football season is upon us. With that comes prospects getting their eyes on them, and for fans, it means they get to start learning who their team may draft.
The Vikings are coming off a draft with limited picks, but they're now heading into 2026 reloaded. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has shown he can build a roster through free agency, but the draft remains a work in progress. He has improved significantly since his first class in 2022, but 2026 is expected to be a pivotal year.
The latest mock draft we get to see before the start of the college season comes from ESPN's Field Yates. The ESPN fantasy and draft analyst gave the Vikings a player that is going to be new to fans, as is the position being mocked to them, as he gave them Northwestern edge rusher Anto Saka.
He writes, "Saka is one of those players who immediately widens your eyes when you watch his tape. His incredible explosiveness puts pass protectors on their heels. Saka's numbers are just OK through two seasons (nine sacks over 22 games), but he draws a lot of attention from opponents and is still a bit raw as a prospect. The starter kit of desirable traits is there."
Yates admits the need isn't huge for them, but he also reminds everyone that having an arsenal of pass rushers is helpful.
"Is edge rush a gigantic need for the Vikings? No. Is there such a thing as too much depth at that position? Also no. Saka could fit in nicely with Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner."
The Eagles showed last year, and the Chiefs and Bucs have shown in others, that having a deep group of pass rushers is effective. The offensive line cannot take out their players, but defenses can rotate their guys in and out when they have the depth to do it.

Northwestern reaches settlement with football coach who was fired amid hazing scandal

CHICAGO — Northwestern University has reached a settlement with former longtime football coach Pat Fitzgerald two years after he sued the prestigious school amid a team hazing scandal, attorneys and the school announced Thursday. 'Though I maintain Northwestern had no legal basis to terminate my employment for cause under the terms of my Employment Agreement, in the interest of resolving this matter and, in particular, to relieve my family from the stress of ongoing litigation, Northwestern and I have agreed to a settlement,' Fitzgerald said in a statement through his attorneys.

NFL will emphasize sportsmanship and crack down on violent and sexually suggestive gestures

The NFL wants players to have fun within the rules. That's why the league will be emphasizing sportsmanship and cracking down on violent and sexually suggestive gestures this season. 'Unsportsmanlike gestures like simulating or either shooting a gun or brandishing a gun, or inappropriate gestures like a throat slash, or unfortunate sexual gestures, those were up 133% so that is a point of emphasis,' NFL officiating rules analyst Walt Anderson said Thursday. 'The officials have made it a point of emphasis to the clubs. It's just one of those areas that the league wants to work actively on. There are plenty of ways for players to be able to celebrate, and they come up with some very unique and often entertaining ways so we want them to focus on those and not the inappropriate areas.' In April, the NFL expanded prohibited acts to include banning the 'nose wipe' gesture that league executive Troy Vincent said is affiliated with gangs. The unsportsmanlike conduct rule now states: 'any violent gesture, which shall include but not be limited to a throat slash, simulating firing or brandishing a gun, or using the 'nose wipe' gesture, or an act that is sexually suggestive or offensive. 'There's no place in the game to be standing over your opponent,' Vincent said in a video that's sent to teams. 'There's no place in the game to have violent gestures. That's not the game of football. We just have to play by the rules, respect your opponent, respect your teammates and play the game in between the whistles.' ___ AP NFL:
