Tragic farewell: Slain journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu laid to rest on what would have been his 39th birthday

In a heart-wrenching ceremony, family, friends and supporters gathered in Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga, to bid farewell to acclaimed journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu, whose life was tragically cut short.
Saturday, June 21 marks a poignant milestone, as it would have been his 39th birthday.
Meanwhile, his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, was laid to rest on Friday, June 20.
The couple, who went missing on February 18, 2025, had their bodies discovered in May, discarded in a secluded bush area in Rust de Winter, near the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Speaking to SABC at the funeral, Ndlovu's brother, Elvis Ndlovu, shared a moment of closure for the family, and said, "I can see my mother is also getting stronger; it's not like before. We have found closure knowing that we are laying him to rest."
Speaking to mourners, a family member told mourners that one of the suspects, Samuel Mogongwe, frequently visited Ndlovu's home during the time the couple was still missing and kept asking whether they had been found,"
"I'm asking myself how he slept at night. He knew we were being investigated, I was also investigated. He never said anything. At least he could have returned them where he found them, and they would have been found sooner," she said.
The woman spoke about how the alleged mastermind betrayed the family and left them with profound hurt since the passing of Ndlovu and his partner.
"He has really hurt us; he was the mastermind; we won't be scared to speak. I ask myself how he embraced his wife knowing that he killed our children," she said.

His arrest followed an investigation that linked him to the couple's kidnapping through cellphone records
Police believe the couple was abducted from their KwaMhlanga home, robbed, and later killed.
A total of five suspects have been arrested and face charges of kidnapping, robbery, and double murder.

'He came to fetch her on 3 July, and when she came home, she said nothing; however, the following day, she attempted suicide. 'She didn't want to talk to me, and I called the accused, and she warned me not to call him; she didn't want him to come, but I thought it was because she didn't want to go back for counselling again. He came with someone else, they left, and he brought her home that evening, but then the accused asked me if she could spend the night at his place. My husband refused because he doesn't have a wife and lives alone.' According to the victim's mother, she had initially contacted Thysen seeking counselling for her daughter's drug use, as he was a known community leader. She stated that the girl had warned her not to contact Thysen after the first incident, and she initially believed her daughter's reluctance was related to counselling sessions rather than abuse. The mother only became aware of the alleged sexual assaults on July 30, 2025, following a second incident. The second alleged encounter took place on July 26, when the victim and a friend went with Thysen to his workplace. The mother stated that her daughter expressed fear of further assault, prompting her to stop all contact and report the matter to the police. Thysen was arrested on August 6, 2025, and remained in custody until he was released on R2,000 bail. During the hearing, Thysen's legal representative noted his 25-year career in the police, his role as a family breadwinner, and his work as a Tai Chi instructor and wellness centre operator. Thysen stated that he had no prior convictions, would comply with bail conditions, attend court hearings, and would not interfere with witnesses or evidence. He denied the allegations and intends to plead not guilty. Thysen also resigned as CPF chairperson upon learning of the investigation. The investigating officer reported that on July 3, Thysen took the victim to his workplace under the pretext of counselling, where he allegedly asked her to undress for a massage.

'Don't accept cool drink': Mkhwanazi warns new constables against bribes

In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), a total of 145 new police constables will be hitting the ground running. A total of 109 women and 36 men all graduated and completed their six-month Introductory Police Development Learning Programme and were all declared competent. Criminals have no regard for the law, for life, or for the well-being of communities. You are now entrusted to be the shield between law-abiding citizens and those who wish them harm. Officers on parade, as you leave the corridors of this academy to go to the coalface of crime fighting, protect yourself to protect others; your safety is paramount. KZN anti-apartheid activist seeks to clear his name, appeals murder conviction

Image: File A former activist, who fought against the apartheid government, is determined to clear his name and restore his reputation after he was labelled an apartheid collaborator and convicted of the murder of a fellow activist. Gugulethu "Matiri" Madonsela was recently granted R10,000 bail pending his appeal. He had already spent almost two years in jail. He was found guilty in November 2023 of the February 1989 murder of his fellow comrade Siphelele Nxumalo and sentenced to ten years in prison. Nxumalo was shot dead in Chesterville. Madonsela's appeal against his conviction and sentence is currently before the Supreme Court of Appeal. Speaking to The Mercury this week, just days after being granted bail, Madonsela stated that Nxumalo was his comrade, and he was close to his parents, who were also involved in the fight against apartheid. They had been together since around 1985. 'I maintain that I had nothing to do with the killing,' he said. Giving context to his life and underground ANC activities that eventually led to the current accusations against him of murder and skipping bail, he explained that life had been difficult under the burden of apartheid. When I heard that they had been asking about me, I alerted them to where I was working.' He stated that the public statement made when he was arrested had tarnished his name.
